Montréal, 7 décembre 2025 – Les Canadiens François Gauthier-Drapeau et Coralie Godbout ont tous les deux conclu au septième rang de leur catégorie respective, dimanche, au Grand Chelem de Tokyo, au Japon. Dans les deux cas, ils ont surtout retenu de précieuses leçons sur les tatamis.

Gauthier-Drapeau a conclu la compétition avec une fiche de deux victoires et deux défaites chez les moins de 81 kg. Médaillé d’or au Grand Chelem d’Abou Dabi la semaine dernière, le judoka de 27 ans a vaincu le Polonais Szymon Szulik par ippon au premier tour, puis a eu le dessus sur Kwok Wing Lee, de Hong Kong, aussi par ippon. Deux sorties dont il était fier et qui ont donné le ton pour la suite du tournoi.

Un premier revers est toutefois venu freiner son élan au tour suivant, face au Japonais Kaito Amano, qui a profité d’une erreur de Gauthier-Drapeau pour se sauver avec la victoire.

« Je pense avoir fait un bon combat, mais vers la fin, j’ai tenté une technique et je me suis fait contrer. Je n’ai pas été assez patient, j’aurais dû le forcer à prendre des pénalités et j’aurais fini par l’avoir. J’ai voulu accélérer les choses, c’est crève-cœur de perdre de cette façon ! Ça reste une bonne leçon à retenir », a déclaré le Québécois, qui a été envoyé au repêchage par la suite où il s’est incliné devant le Géorgien Zaur Dvalashvili.

« C’est une de mes bêtes noires, ç’a été très difficile. J’ai connu une de mes pires performances contre ce gars-là, je vais devoir l’analyser un peu plus et faire mes devoirs, parce que j’ai des lacunes à corriger. Dans l’ensemble, une septième place, ce n’est pas un super résultat, mais il y a beaucoup d’apprentissages à faire dans mes défaites. »

Arthur Margelidon a été limité à un combat dans la même catégorie de poids. Il a perdu face au Russe Timur Arbuzov, futur médaillé de bronze.

Chez les moins de 66 kg, Julien Frascadore a signé une victoire et a subi une défaite dans la capitale nipponne. Il a battu l’Américain Jacob Yang avant de se faire éliminer par le Japonais Shinsei Hattori, lui qui est monté sur le podium pour y recevoir une médaille de bronze en fin de journée.

Du côté féminin, Coralie Godbout a combattu chez les moins de 78 kg. Profitant d’un laissez-passer au tour initial, la Canadienne a remporté son premier affrontement contre la Russe Alexandra Riabchenko. Elle avait ensuite rendez-vous avec la Japonaise Kurena Ikeda, classée septième au monde.

« Ça allait très bien, mais on a passé beaucoup trop de temps au sol. Il ne se passait rien et on a laissé l’action se poursuivre, je devais quand même me défendre et je me suis finalement fait prendre », a mentionné Godbout, qui affrontait Ikeda pour la troisième fois de carrière. Une fois de plus, c’est la représentante du Japon qui a eu le dernier mot. Elle a ensuite poursuivi sa route pour aboutir sur la première marche du podium.

Godbout a quant à elle bifurqué vers le repêchage, où elle s’est mesurée à l’Israélienne Inbar Lanir. Une autre adversaire de taille classée parmi les dix meilleures au monde dans cette catégorie. Lanir l’a emporté grâce à un yuko et a ainsi mis fin à la journée de la Canadienne.

« Je me sentais bien tout au long du combat et je n’ai pas été dominée. En fait, je suis restée en contrôle la majeure partie du temps, sauf pour le petit yuko qui est arrivé un peu de nulle part. »

Il y a un peu plus d’un mois, la Québécoise avait terminé septième au Grand Prix de Guadalajara, au Mexique. Elle avait connu un parcours similaire à celui de dimanche, au Japon, en subissant la défaite face aux mêmes opposantes.

« Évidemment, c’est décevant de perdre ces deux combats-là. Je suis quand même contente de ma compétition. Je continue à progresser et, surtout, je tiens tête à des filles du top-10 mondial. Je sais ce que je dois travailler pour mieux finir mes techniques », a-t-elle conclu, très motivée pour la suite.

Seventh Place for François Gauthier-Drapeau and Coralie Godbout in Tokyo

Montréal, December 7, 2025 – Canadian judokas François Gauthier-Drapeau and Coralie Godbout finished seventh in their respective categories on Sunday at the Grand Slam in Tokyo, Japan. Both will depart the event having learned some valuable lessons.

In the under-81 kg weight category, Gauthier-Drapeau concluded the competition with two wins and two losses. The 27-year-old Canadian, who captured gold at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam last week, notched up two consecutive early victories over Poland’s Szymon Szulik and Hong Kong’s Kwok Wing Lee on Sunday, both by ippon. He was proud of his two wins, which set him on a positive course for the remainder of the tournament.

However, his momentum was dampened in the next round by Kaito Amano of Japan, who took advantage of an error by Gauthier-Drapeau to secure the victory.

“I thought I was fighting pretty well, but near the end, I tried a different technique, and he countered me. I wasn’t patient enough. I should have forced him to take penalties. Then I would have won. But I wanted to speed things up. What a disappointing way to lose! But it was a good lesson for me,” said the Québécois, who moved on to the repechage, where he bowed out to Zaur Dvalashvili of Georgia.

“[Dvalashvili] is one of my nemeses. It was tough. Today’s performance was one of my worst ever against him. I’m going to have to fully analyze it and do some serious work, because there are obviously some things I need to fix. Overall, seventh place is not all that great, but still, there’s a lot I can learn from my losses today.” 

In the same weight category, Arthur Margelidon, who lost his first match to future bronze medallist Timur Arbuzov of Russia, was limited to only one bout.

In the under-66 kg division, Julien Frascadore finished with one win and one loss. He began his day with a victory over Jacob Yang of the USA, before being eliminated by Shinsei Hattori of Japan, who captured a bronze medal at the end of the day.

On the women’s side, Coralie Godbout competed in the under-78 kg weight class. After receiving a first-round bye, she dispatched of Russia’s Alexandra Riabchenko in her first bout of the day. Her next opponent was Kurena Ikeda of Japan, who is ranked seventh in the world.

“It went pretty well for the most part, but we were on the ground for way too long. Nothing was really happening, and we just let things run their course. But I did have to defend myself, and eventually, she got me,” explained Godbout, who was facing Ikeda for the third time in her career. And for the third time, the Japanese athlete ultimately prevailed. Ikeda went on to claim the category’s gold medal.

As for Godbout, she moved on to the repechage, where she faced another tough opponent in Inbar Lanir of Israel, who also ranks in the category’s international top ten. Lanir won by yuko, thus putting an end to the Canadian’s day.

“I felt good throughout the bout, and I didn’t feel that she was dominating. In fact, I was in control for most of the match, except for that yuko that seemed to come out of nowhere.” 

Just over a month ago, Godbout finished seventh at the Guadalajara Grand Prix in Mexico. Her performance there was similar to Sunday’s in Japan, and she lost to the same opponents.

“Losing those two bouts was disappointing, obviously. But still, I feel good about the competition, overall. I’m continuing to improve, and I’m able to hold my own against girls in the top ten. I know what I need to work on to more effectively complete my techniques,” said a motivated Godbout.
