Montréal, 6 février 2022 – François Gauthier-Drapeau continue sa belle percée sur la scène internationale et il est passé bien près d’être médaillé dans une compétition Grand Chelem. Dimanche, au prestigieux tournoi de Paris, l’athlète combattant dans la catégorie des moins de 81 kg s’est classé cinquième après avoir perdu son combat de médaille de bronze en prolongation.
Face à l’Ouzbek et septième aux Jeux olympiques de Tokyo, Sharofiddin Boltaboev, le judoka d’Alma (Québec) a tenté de projeter son adversaire à plusieurs occasions, sans toutefois réussir à s’inscrire au pointage. La fois où il est passé le plus près a été en prolongation, mais l’officiel ne lui a toutefois pas accordé de point, même si Boltaboev a mis beaucoup de temps avant de revenir en position de reprise de combat.
Quelques secondes plus tard, l’arbitre décernait une pénalité pour non combativité à Gauthier-Drapeau qui a automatiquement perdu par ippon, car il s’agissait de sa troisième pénalité du match.
« Ce combat était vraiment à ma portée et à certains moments, il était plus fatigué que moi. Je suis déçu, mais comme me l’a dit mon entraîneur (Alexandre Émond), à chaque fois, je suis toujours de plus en plus proche de gagner contre des gars comme ça. Je m’améliore beaucoup et il y a des erreurs que je faisais cet automne que je ne fais plus, alors je suis content », a reconnu l’athlète de 24 ans.
Plus tôt dans la journée, Gauthier-Drapeau avait remporté son premier combat par ippon contre Bolor-Ochir Gereltuya de la Mongolie. Ensuite, en quart de finale, il a plié l’échine contre le Géorgien Tato Grigalashvili qui lui a fait perdre l’équilibre pour le faire tomber sur le dos. Grigalashvili a conclu la journée avec la médaille d’argent.
« Le Géorgien et l’Ouzbek étaient classés les numéros 2 et 3 au monde, alors c’est quand même impressionnant. J’aurais pu faire un peu mieux, mais je suis quand même content du résultat et ça reste assez bon ! » a conclu celui qui avait aussi remporté son premier duel repêchage par ippon où il s’est défait du Brésilien Guiherme Schmidt.
Gauthier-Drapeau sera de retour en action à un tournoi à Tel-Aviv dans deux semaines.

François Gauthier-Drapeau Almost Reaches Podium in Paris
Montréal, February 6, 2022 – François Gauthier-Drapeau, who has been making great strides on the international competition circuit, came close to winning a Grand Slam medal this weekend. At the prestigious Paris tournament on Sunday, the Canadian judoka finished fifth in the under-81 kg weight division after losing his bronze medal match in overtime.
The native of Alma, Quebec, tried several times to throw his opponent Sharofiddin Boltaboev of Uzbekistan—who finished seventh at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer—but was unable to score. He came close to getting on the board in overtime; however, the referee did not award him any points, even though Boltaboev was slow to return to fighting position.
A few seconds later, the referee awarded a non-combativity penalty to Gauthier-Drapeau, who therefore automatically lost by ippon, as it was his third penalty of the match.
“This fight was really within my reach, and at times, he was more tired than I was. I’m disappointed, but as my coach (Alexandre Émond) always says, each of these experiences brings me closer to beating a guy like that. I keep getting better, and I no longer make certain errors that I made last fall, so I’m happy with that,” said the 24-year-old.
Earlier in the day, Gauthier-Drapeau won his first match by ippon against Bolor-Ochir Gereltuya of Mongolia. Later, in the quarter-final, he bowed out to Tato Grigalashvili of Georgia, who knocked him off-balance, causing him to fall on his back. Grigalashvili went on to win the silver medal.
“Gereltuya and Grigalashvili were ranked second and third in the world, which is impressive. I could have done better, but I’m still happy with my results, which were pretty good!” said Gauthier-Drapeau, who also beat Brazil’s Guiherme Schmidt by ippon in his first repechage.
Gauthier-Drapeau will be back in action in Tel Aviv in two weeks.
