François Gauthier-Drapeau renoue avec le podium international à Lima

Montréal, 15 août 2026 (Judo Canada) – François Gauthier-Drapeau a profité de son passage au Grand Prix de judo de Lima, au Pérou, pour ajouter une nouvelle médaille à sa collection. Il a mis la main sur l’argent au tableau des moins de 81 kg, où il s’est incliné en grande finale contre le Brésilien David Lima. Malgré l’issue défavorable de ce dernier combat, le Québécois était soulagé de renouer avec le podium international.

« C’est toujours un peu crève-cœur de perdre en finale, mais je dois avouer que la médaille fait du bien ! Ça faisait un petit bout de temps que je n’avais pas eu de podium et je suis content d’y être parvenu aujourd’hui », a laissé tomber Gauthier-Drapeau au terme de la finale qui s’est soldée par yuko en faveur de son rival à la fin des quatre minutes de combat.

« C’était dur comme dernière sortie, a-t-il poursuivi. Je n’ai pas vraiment été capable de bien attaquer contre cet adversaire. Je me suis fait contrer et je n’ai pas été en mesure de revenir. »

Il s’agissait du cinquième duel du jour pour l’Olympien des Jeux de Paris qui a fait face à son lot de défis avant d’atteindre la grande finale, remportant entre autres deux combats en prolongation.

« Ç’a été une grosse journée et j’ai eu quelques combats difficiles. Ça me démontre que je dois corriger quelques petites choses, mais aussi que j’ai amélioré de bons aspects de mon judo, a-t-il expliqué. Dans l’ensemble, je suis content du travail accompli et surtout très heureux de revenir avec une médaille ! »

Laurence Biron poursuit sa séquence

Fraîchement médaillée d’or aux Jeux du Commonwealth, Laurence Biron est elle aussi montée sur le podium samedi, en gagnant l’une des deux finales de bronze chez les moins de 63 kg.

Après une victoire par ippon face à la Bélarusse Yana Makretskaya au repêchage, la Québécoise devait affronter la Brésilienne Rafaela Silva, troisième au classement mondial, médaillée d’or des Jeux olympiques en 2016 (-57 kg) et multiple championne du monde.

Cette dernière a toutefois été disqualifiée au terme de sa demi-finale. La médaille de bronze est ainsi revenue directement à Biron, qui est par le fait même montée sur le tout premier podium de sa carrière en Grand Prix.

« Je suis vraiment très contente de cette médaille ! On aimerait toujours finir sur une victoire avec un gros ippon, mais si je regarde le portrait général, j’ai eu une très bonne journée et je suis fière de ma performance », a confié l’athlète de 22 ans, qui a subi sa seule défaite du jour aux mains de l’Espagnole Ariela Sanchez Benitez, en quart de finale.

Forte de ce quatrième podium de suite chez les séniores, Biron souhaite maintenant consolider ses acquis et continuer sa progression chez les moins de 63 kg. Elle aura d’ailleurs la chance de vivre un tout premier Grand Chelem en septembre, du côté de Budapest, en Hongrie.

« Je suis sur une bonne lancée présentement et j’ai vraiment de plus en plus confiance en mes moyens. Je suis bien entourée et je sens vraiment que je suis capable de performer à un meilleur niveau qu’auparavant. Rivaliser avec des filles comme aujourd’hui, ça donne encore plus de confiance et j’ai hâte de vivre mon premier Grand Chelem », a-t-elle conclu.

Également en action chez les moins de 63 kg, Catherine Toshkov a subi la défaite au troisième tour contre l’éventuelle médaillée d’argent du jour, l’Espagnole Laura Fernandez Vazquez. Une deuxième défaite, au repêchage contre la Vénézuélienne Anriquelis Barrios, l’a ensuite reléguée en septième place du classement dominé par la Japonaise Seiko Watanabe.

Olivier Gagnon (-81 kg) a de son côté vu son parcours prendre fin au deuxième tour contre le Serbe Vasilije Grujici, vainqueur par waza-ari.

Seul autre Canadien en lice samedi, le Montréalais Félix Mercier-Ross n’a pu trouver le chemin de la victoire au tableau des moins de 73 kg.

Le Grand Prix de judo de Lima se conclura dimanche, avec la présentation des combats dans cinq divisions. Coralie Godbout (-78 kg), Frédérique Lavigne (+78 kg), Guillaume Gaulin (-90 kg) et Keagan Young (-90 kg) seront les Canadiens en action pour l’occasion.

François Gauthier-Drapeau gets acquainted with the podium once more – this time in Lima 

Montréal, August 15, 2026 (Judo Canada) – François Gauthier-Drapeau took advantage of his participation at the Lima Judo Grand Prix in Peru, to add another medal to his collection. Gauthier-Drapeau claimed silver in the Under-81 kg division, where he lost in the final to David Lima (Brazil). Despite a disappointing outcome of that final bout, the Québecois athlete was pleased to return to the international podium.

“It may be heartbreaking to lose in the final, but I have to admit that earning a medal feels good! It had been a while since I’d been on the podium, and I’m happy I managed to do it today,” Gauthier-Drapeau remarked after the final, which ended with a yuko in favour of his opponent at the end of the four-minute bout. “It was kind of a tough way to end the competition – I wasn’t really able to attack effectively against my opponent. I got countered and wasn’t able to come back,” he analysed.

The gold medal round was the fifth bout of the day for the Paris Games Olympian, who faced his fair share of challenges before reaching the gold medal final, including winning two bouts in overtime.

“It was a big day, and I had a few tough matches. Overall it just demonstrated to me that I need to correct a few small things, but also that I’ve improved some key aspects of my judo. I’m happy with the work I’ve done and, above all, very happy to be coming home with a medal!” he concluded.

Laurence Biron’s medal streak continues

Fresh off her gold medal win at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Laurence Biron also stepped onto the podium for Team Canada Saturday, winning one of the two bronze medal matches in the Under-63 kg weight class.

After an ippon victory over Yana Makretskaya (Belarus) in the repechage, the Québec judoka was set to face Brazilian Rafaela Silva, a formidable opponent, ranked third in the world, a 2016 Olympic gold medalist (-57 kg), and a multiple-time world champion.

However, in an unusual turn of events, Silva was disqualified following her semifinal match. As a result, the bronze medal went directly to Biron, who consequently claimed her inaugural Grand Prix podium finish.

“I’m really, really happy with my medal! Of course you always love to finish with a victory and a big impressive ippon, but looking at the big picture, I had a very good day and I’m proud of my performance,” noted the 22-year-old athlete, who suffered her only loss of the day in the quarterfinals at the hands of Spain’s Ariela Sanchez Benitez.

Buoyed by this, her fourth consecutive podium finish in international senior competition, Biron now hopes to build on her achievements and continue her athletic evolution in the Under-63-kg division. This September, Biron will have the chance to compete in her very first Grand Slam in in Budapest, Hungary.

“I’m on a roll right now, and I’m really gaining more and more confidence in my abilities. I’m surrounded by a great support system, and I truly feel that I’m capable of performing at a higher level than before. Competing against athletes like the ones I faced today gives me so much more confidence, and I can’t wait to experience my first Grand Slam,” she concluded.

Also competing in the women’s Under-63 kg division, Catherine Toshkov suffered a loss in the third round against the day’s eventual silver medalist, Laura Fernandez Vazquez (Spain). In the repechage against Venezuela’s Anriquelis Barrios, Toshkov experienced a second loss, which then relegated her to seventh place in the standings; ahead of Barrios on the podium was Japan’s Seiko Watanabe, who dominated the category.

On the men’s tatami, Olivier Gagnon (-81 kg), saw his day come to an end in the second round against Serbia’s Vasilije Grujici, the latter winning the match by waza-ari.

The only other Canadian in action on Saturday was Montréal’s Félix Mercier-Ross, who was unable to secure a victory in his Under-73 kg category.

The Lima Judo Grand Prix comes to a close tomorrow, Sunday, with bouts scheduled in five divisions. Stepping onto the tatami for Team Canada will be: Coralie Godbout (-78 kg), Frédérique Lavigne (+78 kg), Guillaume Gaulin (-90 kg) and Keagan Young (-90 kg), so stayed tuned for more judo excitement.
