Montréal, 29 novembre 2025 – Le judoka François Gauthier-Drapeau a remporté la deuxième médaille d’or de sa carrière à un Grand Chelem, samedi, aux Émirats arabes unis. Le Canadien a conclu son excellente journée au sommet du podium des moins de 81 kg à Abou Dabi.
Le Canadien a ouvert la marque dès la première minute de cette finale qui l’opposait au Russe Abdul-Kerim Tasuev. Il restait un peu plus de deux minutes lorsqu’il a ajouté un waza-ari au tableau indicateur, en route vers une victoire convaincante. Pour y arriver, il a toutefois dû s’assurer de ne pas recevoir une troisième pénalité et risquer de voir son avance s’envoler.
« J’ai vraiment fait du bon judo en finale. Mes techniques ont bien fonctionné et j’ai rapidement marqué des points. J’étais un peu nerveux de me retrouver devant un adversaire coriace, je savais que j’allais devoir sortir le grand jeu ! Avec deux pénalités, je n’avais pas le droit à l’erreur et c’est toujours stressant de gérer ça, mais je m’en suis bien tiré », a déclaré Gauthier-Drapeau, lui qui compte maintenant 11 médailles en Grand Chelem, dont deux d’or.
Samedi, il a d’abord vaincu Ramon Hernandez Jr, des États-Unis, Shinebayar Oyunchimeg, de la Mongolie, ainsi que Georgi Gramatikov, de la Bulgarie. Sa victoire face à Victor Sterpu, de la Moldavie, lui a permis d’atteindre la finale et d’être couronné champion.
« De gagner une médaille aujourd’hui, ça fait vraiment du bien et ça me redonne de la confiance », a ajouté Gauthier-Drapeau, qui avait aussi remporté l’or à l’Open panaméricain de Montréal. Tournoi auquel il avait participé chez les moins de 90 kg.
Aussi en action samedi, Jessica Klimkait est passée à une seule victoire de monter sur le podium dans la capitale des Émirats arabes unis, comme elle l’avait fait lors de ses deux derniers Grands Prix, à Lima et à Guadalajara. La Canadienne a combattu pour une médaille de bronze dans le tableau des moins de 63 kg et s’est inclinée devant l’Italienne Carlotta Avanzato.
Klimkait a vaincu la Britannique Lucy Renshall à son premier duel de la journée. Elle a ensuite perdu contre la Brésilienne Rafaela Silva, future médaillée de bronze de la catégorie, ce qui l’a envoyée au repêchage. La représentante du Canada a eu le dessus sur la Croate Iva Oberan avant de se mesurer à Avanzato.
C’est la Japonaise Megu Danno qui a remporté l’or devant Enkhriilen Lkhagvatogoo, de la Mongolie.
Vendredi, Julien Frascadore a été éliminé à son premier combat des moins de 66 kg par le Kazakh Nurkanat Serikbayev. Les trois Canadiens participeront au Grand Chelem de Tokyo, la fin de semaine prochaine. Ils seront accompagnés de Daniil Kremerman (-66 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-81 kg), Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg), Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg), Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) et Coralie Godbout (-78 kg).
François Gauthier-Drapeau Captures Gold at Abu Dhabi Grand Slam
Montréal, November 29, 2025 – Canada’s François Gauthier-Drapeau scooped up the second Grand Slam gold medal of his career on Saturday in the United Arab Emirates, ending an outstanding day in the under-81 kg category atop the podium in Abu Dhabi.
After opening the scoring in the first minute of the final against Russia’s Abdul-Kerim Tasuev, he added a waza-ari to the board with just over two minutes to go, on his way to a decisive victory. However, he had to walk a tight line to ensure he did not receive a third penalty and thus blow his lead.
“In the final, I really did some good judo. My techniques worked well, and I racked up points quickly. I had been a bit nervous about facing such a tough opponent, though, and I knew I was going to have to bring my A game! Having received two penalties, I couldn’t afford to make any more mistakes. That’s always a stressful situation to be in, but I managed,” said Gauthier-Drapeau, who now has eleven Grand Slam medals to his name, including two gold.
After dispatching of Ramon Hernandez Jr. of the USA, Shinebayar Oyunchimeg of Mongolia, and Georgi Gramatikov of Bulgaria earlier on Saturday, Gauthier-Drapeau faced Moldova’s Victor Sterpu in the semi-finals. His victory in that match allowed him to advance to the big final, where he was crowned champion.
“Winning a medal today feels great, and it’s a real confidence booster,” said Gauthier-Drapeau, who also won gold at the Pan-American Open in Montréal, where he competed in the under-90 kg pool.
Also on Saturday, Jessica Klimkait (-63 kg) came within one win of reaching the podium in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, a feat she had achieved at her last two Grand Prix events in Lima and Guadalajara.
However, in her bronze medal match, the Canadian bowed out to Carlotta Avanzato of Italy.
Earlier, Klimkait had defeated Lucy Renshall of Great Britain in her first bout of the day. She then lost to Rafaela Silva of Brazil, who later won bronze, and moved on to the repechage, where she ousted Iva Oberan of Croatia before facing Avanzato.
The category’s gold medal went to Megu Danno of Japan. Enkhriilen Lkhagvatogoo of Mongolia collected silver.
On Friday, Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) was eliminated in his first bout of the day by Kazakhstan’s Nurkanat Serikbayev.
The three Canadians will compete at the Tokyo Grand Slam next week. They will be accompanied by Daniil Kremerman (-66 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-81 kg), Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg), Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg), Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), and Coralie Godbout (-78 kg).
