Heidi Quach et Evelyn Beaton se démarquent en Belgique

Montréal, 27 janvier 2024 – Deux athlètes canadiennes ont été en mesure de se démarquer samedi à l’Open international belge. Du côté féminin, à Herstal, Heidi Quach (-48 kg) et Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) ont terminé leur journée chez les juniors sur la troisième marche du podium, alors que John Jr Messé A Bessong (+100 kg) a pris la cinquième place de sa catégorie, lui qui combattait à Visé.

Quach a amorcé sa journée en force, remportant ses trois premiers combats dans la phase des poules. Elle a vaincu coup sur coup la Française Elsa Jouanneau, l’Allemande Zoé Hamdan et la Néerlandaise Megan Warners afin d’obtenir son billet pour le tableau principal.

Elle y a ensuite battu l’Allemande Asal Ghaffar, au premier tour. Quach avait alors rendez-vous avec la Japonaise Adachi Mito, qui a remporté le combat par ippon. Mito a poursuivi sa route jusqu’à la médaille d’or de la compétition.

La Québécoise a toutefois été en mesure de rebondir dans son duel pour une médaille de bronze face à la Néerlandaise Maud Rikmanspoel. Selon l’entraîneur canadien Janusz Pawlowski, c’est la capacité d’anticipation de Quach, qui lui a permis de monter sur le podium samedi.

« Heidi a été excellente aujourd’hui (samedi), elle s’est bien battue face à la Japonaise et elle a été excellente défensivement. Plusieurs manœuvres ont été spectaculaires. Heidi a un incroyable sens de l’anticipation, un instinct que peu d’athlètes possèdent, et ç’a été la clé de son succès. Ç’a été une très belle journée pour elle », a commenté Pawlowski.

Dans cette même catégorie à Herstal, Marie-Lune Turmel a été défaite à ses deux premiers combats du jour.

Quant à elle, Evelyn Beaton a remporté ses deux combats en lever de rideau de la compétition face à la Néerlandaise Emma Van Leeuwen et l’Allemande Nina Güth. Beaton a toutefois été freinée dès le premier tour éliminatoire où elle s’est inclinée devant Shanice Maya Luis, des Pays-Bas.

Cette défaite n’a pas incommodé Beaton qui a su se reprendre au repêchage, l’emportant d’abord face à l’Allemande Leonie Wickert avant de s’imposer contre Tabea Mecklenburg, elle aussi de l’Allemagne, lors du duel pour la médaille de bronze.

« Evelyn a connu de très bons combats en début de journée, elle a réussi à être très dominante par moment. Même lors de sa défaite, elle a été en mesure de bien contrôler le combat, mais elle a commis une erreur qui a été décisive. Elle a gardé la tête haute et s’est bien battue pour aller chercher une médaille de bronze à la fin de la journée », a ajouté Pawlowski.

Quach, Beaton et Turmel seront de retour en action dimanche, à Herstal, pour la compétition chez les seniors. Leurs coéquipières Sarra Bourihane (-52 kg), Isabelle Harris (-63 kg), Kiera Westlake (-63 kg), Laurence Biron (-70 kg) et Alexandria Lefort (-70 kg) les rejoindront pour l’occasion.

Messé A Bessong au pied du podium

Du côté de Visé, toujours en Belgique, John Jr Messé A Bessong a obtenu le meilleur résultat chez les représentants de l’unifolié avec une cinquième place. L’athlète de 19 ans a d’abord vaincu le Français Mohamed Rouahi, puis a poursuivi sa route grâce à une victoire devant Cédric Caillon, lui aussi de la France.

Le Québécois a toutefois vu ses chances de médaille d’or s’effondrer en demi-finale de la compétition où il a été vaincu par le Belge Edouard Capelle. Messé A Bessong avait la chance de se reprendre dans le duel pour la médaille de bronze où il affrontait Nasibov Kanan de l’Azerbaïdjan. Ce dernier a forcé Messé A Bessong a commettre trois pénalités lors du duel et est reparti avec la victoire.

« L’athlète de l’Azerbaïdjan était très imposant et il a utilisé le tout à son avantage. John n’a pas été capable de trouver une solution pour venir à bout de son adversaire. Il continue de prendre de l’expérience et je suis persuadé qu’il va revenir plus fort la prochaine fois. », a raconté l’entraîneur canadien Sasha Mehmedovic.

Guillaume Gaulin a, quant à lui, remis une fiche de deux victoires et deux défaites chez les moins de 90 kg, samedi, en Belgique. Dans cette même catégorie, Alex Marineau a profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour avant de s’incliner au tour suivant face au Néerlandais Tigo Renes.

Chez les moins de 73 kg, Justin Lemire et Olivier Gagnon ont remis des fiches identiques d’une victoire et une défaite alors que Yanis Hachemi a perdu son seul combat de la journée.

Les hostilités reprendront dimanche à Visé alors que Frédéric De Cardaillac (-66 kg), Daniel McCristall (-66 kg), Daniil Kremerman (-66 kg), Jumber Meladze (-81 kg), David Popovici (-81 kg), Keagan Young (-81 kg) et Benjamin Kendrick (-100 kg) seront les Canadiens en action.

Kelly Deguchi a participé de son côté au Grand Prix du Portugal, vendredi. Dans la catégorie des moins de 52 kg, l’Albertaine a été défaite d’entrée de jeu par la Croate Ana Viktorija Puljiz. La médaille d’or de la catégorie a été remportée par l’Ouzbek Diyora Keldiyorova.

Ana Laura Portuondo-Isasi (+78 kg) et Mohab ElNahas (-90 kg) seront en action au Portugal dimanche.

Heidi Quach and Evelyn Beaton Capture Medals in Belgium

Montréal, January 27, 2024 – Two Canadian women distinguished themselves on Saturday at the International Belgian Open. In the women’s tournament in Herstal, Heidi Quach (-48 kg) and Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) won bronze medals in the junior competition. John Jr Messé A Bessong (+100 kg) finished fifth in his weight division in Visé.

Quach started the day strong, winning her first three bouts in the pool phase. She defeated Elsa Jouanneau of France, Zoé Hamdan of Germany, and Megan Warners of the Netherlands back-to-back to advance to the main draw, where she ousted Asal Ghaffar of Germany in the first round. Her next fight was against Adachi Mito of Japan, who won the bout by ippon and later went on to capture the category’s gold medal.

However, Quach bounced back in the bronze medal final with a win over Maud Rikmanspoel of the Netherlands. According to Canadian coach Janusz Pawlowski, the Québécoise’s ability to anticipate her opponents’ moves was key to her podium finish on Saturday.

“Heidi was great today. She fought well against [Mito], and her defense was excellent. Some of her moves were spectacular. She has a great capacity to predict what’s coming. It’s an instinct that few athletes possess, and it was the key to her great results. She had a great day,” he said.

In the same weight class, Marie-Lune Turmel lost her first two fights of the day in Herstal.

Evelyn Beaton won her two opening bouts against Emma Van Leeuwen of the Netherlands and Nina Güth of Germany. However, she hit a roadblock in the first elimination round, losing to Shanice Maya Luis of the Netherlands.

The loss did not faze Beaton, who rallied in the repechage to defeat Leonie Wickert of Germany before edging out Tabea Mecklenburg, also of Germany, in the bronze medal final.

“Evelyn had some great fights early in the day. At certain points, she was fully in control. Even during the fight she lost, she controlled the match well, but she made an error that ended up being decisive. But she kept her head up and fought well for the bronze medal at the end of the day,” explained Pawlowski.

Quach, Beaton, and Turmel will be back in action on Sunday in Herstal, for the senior competition. They will be joined by their teammates Sarra Bourihane (-52 kg), Isabelle Harris (-63 kg), Kiera Westlake (-63 kg), Laurence Biron (-70 kg), and Alexandria Lefort (-70 kg).

Messé A Bessong at foot of podium

John Jr Messé A Bessong obtained Canada’s highest result in Visé, Belgium, with a fifth-place finish.

The 19-year-old began the day with victories over Mohamed Rouahi and Cédric Caillon, both of France. However, his gold medal hopes were dashed in the semi-final, when he lost to Edouard Capelle of Belgium. Messé A Bessong then fought for a bronze medal, but his opponent Nasibov Kanan of Azerbaijan forced him to take three penalties and give up the win.

“The athlete from Azerbaijan was very strong, and he used every tool he had at his disposal. John wasn’t able to find the solution he needed to win. He’s still gaining experience, and I’m sure he’ll come back even stronger next time,” said Canadian coach Sasha Mehmedovic.

In the under-90 kg weight category, Guillaume Gaulin had two wins and two losses on Saturday. In the same weight class, Alex Marineau obtained a bye in the first round, then lost to Tigo Renes of the Netherlands.

In the under-73 kg division, Justin Lemire and Olivier Gagnon had one win and one loss each, while Yanis Hachemi lost his only match of the day.

The tournament will continue on Sunday in Visé. Frédéric De Cardaillac (-66 kg), Daniel McCristall (-66 kg), Daniil Kremerman (-66 kg), Jumber Meladze (-81 kg), David Popovici (-81 kg), Keagan Young (-81 kg), and Benjamin Kendrick (-100 kg) will represent Canada on the tatamis.

On Friday, Alberta’s Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg) took part in the Grand Prix in Portugal. She lost her first fight of the day to Ana Viktorija Puljiz of Croatia. Diyora Keldiyorova of Uzbekistan won the gold medal.

Ana Laura Portuondo-Isasi (+78 kg) and Mohab ElNahas (-90 kg) will be in action in Portugal on Sunday.
