Médaillée d’argent, Jessica Klimkait arrive tout juste à court

Montréal, 24 mars 2023 – Jessica Klimkait a poursuivi sa belle séquence et s’est encore retrouvée sur un podium international des moins de 57 kg, vendredi. Cette fois, elle a su tourner la page sur une défaite crève-cœur subie en demi-finale pour conclure avec le bronze au Grand Chelem de Tbilissi, en Géorgie.
Klimkait est montée sur le podium à chacune de ses douze compétitions depuis février 2020, ce qui inclut les Jeux olympiques de Tokyo et deux Championnats du monde. Sa médaille de bronze obtenue vendredi est la 13e de sa carrière en Grand Chelem.
Pour y parvenir, elle s’est mesurée à la Brésilienne Rafaela Silva en conclusion de son tournoi.
La judoka de 26 ans a fait basculer son adversaire avec un peu plus de 2 minutes à faire au temps réglementaire. Elle a tenté de l’emporter en maîtrisant les épaules de Silva au sol, mais cette dernière a réussi à se défaire de son emprise.
La Canadienne a tenté sa chance à nouveau quelques secondes plus tard et la Brésilienne n’a pu se défendre une seconde fois. Elle a abandonné et a offert à Klimkait sa première victoire de la journée par ippon.
« En faisant face à quelqu’un qui m’est très familier, je savais que j’allais devoir tout donner si je voulais l’emporter, a souligné l’Ontarienne, qui a affronté Silva pour la neuvième fois de sa carrière. J’ai commencé le combat à mon propre rythme et conservé ma concentration au fil des échanges. Je savais que si je continuais à combattre de cette manière, je trouverais un moyen de gagner. »
En début de journée, Klimkait a vaincu la Kazakhe Bakyt Kussakbayeva, la Britannique Lele Nairne et la Brésilienne Jessica Lima. Elle a ensuite perdu en demi-finale face à Nora Gjakova, du Kosovo, après avoir reçu une troisième pénalité après 6 minutes et 40 secondes de combat.
« Ma défaite m’a réveillée et j’ai vu mon combat pour la médaille de bronze comme une occasion de changer mon état d’esprit pour le mieux. »
Gjakova s’est ensuite inclinée en grande finale devant la Serbe Marica Perisic. L’autre médaille de bronze de la catégorie a été remise à l’Italienne Veronica Toniolo.
Antoine Bouchard sera en action samedi chez les moins de 73 kg, alors que François Gauthier-Drapeau et Mohab ElNahas combattront dans la catégorie des moins de 81 kg.
Jessica Klimkait Sets Pace and Claims Bronze
Montréal, March 24, 2023 – Jessica Klimkait continued her winning streak on Friday, once again finishing the day on the international podium in the under-57 kg weight class. She was able to overcome a heartbreaking loss in the semi-final to cap off the day with a bronze medal at the Grand Slam in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Klimkait has stood on the podium at every one of her twelve competitions since February 2020, including the Tokyo Olympic Games and two World Championships. Today’s bronze medal was the thirteenth of her Grand Slam career.
To earn it, Klimkait had to get the better of Brazil’s Rafaela Silva in her final bout of the tournament.
The 26-year-old managed to knock her opponent down with just over two minutes to go in regulation time. She attempted to immobilize Silva’s shoulders on the ground, but Silva was able to extricate herself.
A few seconds later, the Canadian made another attempt and this time, Silva was unable to defend herself. She gave up, giving Klimkait her first win of the day by ippon.
“Going into the final against someone I’m very familiar with, I knew I’d have to fight hard if I wanted to win,” explained the Ontarian, who has now fought Silva nine times. “I started the match at my own pace and tempo and kept my focus throughout each exchange. I knew that if I continued to fight that way, I’d find a way to win.”
Earlier in the day, Klimkait defeated Bakyt Kussakbayeva of Kazakhstan, Lele Nairne of Great Britain and Jessica Lima of Brazil. She then lost to Nora Gjakova of Kosovo in the semi-final after receiving a third penalty six minutes and forty seconds into the fight.
“My loss woke me up and I saw the bronze medal match as an opportunity to improve my mindset.”
Gjakova later lost to Marica Perisic of Serbia in the big final. The other bronze medal in the under-57 kg category went to Veronica Toniolo of Italy.
On Saturday, Antoine Bouchard will compete in the under-73 kg weight division, while François Gauthier-Drapeau and Mohab ElNahas test their mettle in the under-81 kg group.
