Montréal, 16 février 2023 – Christa Deguchi, première au classement mondial de la Fédération internationale de judo (IJF) chez les moins de 57 kg, et Jessica Klimkait, deuxième de ce même palmarès, avaient rendez-vous en grande finale du Grand Chelem de Tel-Aviv, jeudi. Après plus de 8 minutes de combat, c’est Klimkait qui a eu le dessus sur sa compatriote.

Les deux athlètes ont été au coude à coude durant la majorité du combat. Deguchi et Klimkait comptaient d’ailleurs deux pénalités chacune au terme du temps réglementaire.

Le spectacle s’est animé un peu plus lors de la prolongation. Jessica Klimkait a finalement eu le dernier mot en réussissant un ippon sur Deguchi pour mettre la main sur la médaille d’or.

« Jessica et Christa se connaissent par cœur, on savait que ça allait être un combat extrêmement serré. Avec deux filles aussi sérieuses et vaillantes, c’était certain que ça allait donner un excellent spectacle. Ça rend notre travail très facile », a commenté l’entraîneur Antoine Valois-Fortier, qui avoue avoir eu un rôle plus effacé lors de la finale.

La route jusqu’à la plus haute marche du podium n’a pas été de tout repos pour la médaillée de bronze des Jeux de Tokyo. Après avoir gagné ses deux premiers combats assez rapidement, Klimkait a eu droit à deux duels marathons en quart et en demi-finale.

L’Ontarienne a eu besoin de 8 minutes et 20 secondes pour venir à bout de la Turque Ozlem Yildiz par ippon. Puis, en demi-finale, la Brésilienne Rafaela Silva a encore une fois donné du fil à retordre à Klimkait qui l’a emporté après 9 minutes et 17 secondes de combat.

« Ç’a été de très, très longs combats pour Jessica avant de se rendre en finale. Une fois dans le match pour la médaille d’or, j’ai l’impression que c’est comme si c’était une nouvelle journée. Elles ont toutes les deux eu une longue pause avant la finale et j’avais hâte de voir comment elles allaient réagir sur le tatami », a ajouté Valois-Fortier.

Christa Deguchi a également brillé durant ce tournoi, en route vers la huitième médaille de sa carrière en Grand Chelem. Antoine Valois-Fortier s’est d’ailleurs dit extrêmement satisfait de la force de caractère de sa protégée.

« Christa a connu une superbe journée. Elle a remporté tous ses combats de manière convaincante, elle fait preuve d’une belle constance et c’est pour cette raison qu’elle fait partie de l’élite du sport. »

Deguchi a vaincu dans l’ordre la Néerlandaise Shannon Van De Meeberg, la Brésilienne Jessica Pereira, l’Allemande Pauline Starke et l’Ukrainienne Daria Bilodid avant de baisser pavillon contre Klimkait en finale.

En action dans le tableau des moins de 52 kg, Kelly Deguchi, médaillée d’or la semaine dernière à l’Open européen de Sofia, s’est inclinée dès son premier combat à Tel-Aviv.  Elle a été battue par la Belge Charline Van Snick.

Le Grand Chelem d’Israël se poursuit vendredi alors que Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg), Antoine Bouchard (-73 kg) et François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) seront en action.

Jessica Klimkait Wins All-Canadian Final

Montréal, February 16, 2023 – Canadians Christa Deguchi and Jessica Klimkait, who respectively hold the number one and two spots in the International Judo Federation (IJF) rankings in the under-57 kg weight class, found themselves going head-to-head in the grand final of the Tel Aviv Grand Slam on Thursday. After more than eight minutes of combat, Klimkait ultimately prevailed over her countrymate.

The two athletes were neck and neck for most of the fight. They received two penalties each during regulation time, but things really heated up in overtime. In the end, Klimkait scored an ippon to clinch the gold medal.

“Jessica and Christa know each other inside out, so we knew the match would be extremely close. We knew that these two, who are both so committed and so determined, would put on quite a show. It made our job a lot easier,” noted coach Antoine Valois-Fortier, acknowledging that he played a much smaller role in the final.

The path to the top of the podium was a bumpy one for the Tokyo Olympic Games bronze medallist. After winning her two first bouts expeditiously, Klimkait had to battle through two marathon matches in the quarter- and semi-finals.

In the former, the Ontarian defeated Ozlem Yildiz of Turkey by ippon after eight minutes and 20 seconds. She then sparred with Brazil’s Rafaela Silva for nine minutes and 17 seconds in the semi-final before finally ousting her opponent.

“Jessica had to get through some very, very long fights to advance to the final. Once she got there, though, I had the impression it was like a new day. Both athletes had a long break before the final, so I was looking forward to seeing how things would play out on the tatamis,” added Valois-Fortier.

Deguchi was also brilliant during the tournament, as she worked toward her eighth career Grand Slam medal. Valois-Fortier expressed great satisfaction with her strength of character.

“Christa had a fantastic day. She had convincing victories in all her fights, and she was very consistent. That’s what puts her at the elite level in this sport.” 

Deguchi defeated Shannon Van De Meeberg of the Netherlands, Jessica Pereira of Brazil, Pauline Starke of Germany and Daria Bilodid of Ukraine before bowing out to Klimkait in the final.

In under-52 kg action, Kelly Deguchi, who won gold at last week’s European Open in Sofia, lost her first and only match of the day in Tel Aviv to Charline Van Snick of Belgium.

The Grand Slam will continue on Friday in Israel. Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg), Antoine Bouchard (-73 kg) and François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) will all be in action.
