Montréal, 27 août 2022 – John Jr Messe A Bessong (+90 kg) a connu une saison 2022 de rêve avec de nombreux podiums et même quelques médailles d’or. Samedi, aux Championnats du monde cadets disputés à Sarajevo, en Bosnie-Herzégovine, le Québécois a poursuivi sur sa lancée pour devenir champion du monde chez les cadets.

Messe A Bessong a commencé la journée en force en remportant rapidement ses deux premiers combats contre Gereltbayar Ochir de la Mongolie et Ramazan Ahmadov de l’Azerbaïdjan. Deux victoires qui ont donné confiance au Canadien et à son entraîneur Alexandre Émond.

« Ç’a été assez facile à ses deux premiers combats. Il n’a pas dépensé trop d’énergie et il était très expéditif, c’est de quoi nous mettre en confiance rapidement. Il a bien géré son début de journée », a expliqué l’entraîneur.

L’athlète de 17 ans a poursuivi son épopée en quart de finale en venant à bout d’Emirkhan Zholdoshkaziev du Kyrgyzstan. Il a ensuite atteint la finale grâce à sa victoire devant le Japonais Dota Arai, un adversaire plutôt méconnu du Canadien.

« L’athlète du Kyrgyzstan était aussi grand que John, ce qui est assez rare honnêtement. John a réussi à le battre stratégiquement en lui faisant prendre plusieurs pénalités. Ensuite, le Japonais était gaucher, ce qui est un peu la bête noire de John, mais il a réussi à le battre assez facilement et il avait fait le plein de confiance pour la finale. »

Messe A Bessong a mis le point d’exclamation sur cette journée parfaite en remportant la grande finale devant le Brésilien Gabriel Santos. Ce dernier est clairement l’adversaire ayant donné le plus de fil à retordre au Québécois durant la journée.

« Ç’a été une superbe journée pour John, je suis vraiment content pour lui. Il s’était déjà entraîné avec le Brésilien dans le passé. John tirait de l’arrière à la fin du combat, il a pris un risque en y allant au corps et la technique a fonctionné. Il a projeté le Brésilien au sol pour gagner par ippon », s’est réjoui Alexandre Émond.

Avec son physique très imposant et son excellente fiche en 2022, John Jr Messe A Bessong débarquait à Sarajevo avec la médaille d’or en ligne de mire. Force est d’admettre qu’il a répondu à toutes les attentes.

« John a un physique hors du commun et il est super athlétique pour sa grandeur. Je pense qu’il aurait du succès dans tous les sports. Il venait à Sarajevo pour monter sur le podium, il n’y a aucun doute là-dessus. Il croyait à la médaille d’or évidemment, quand il a vu le tirage au sort, il savait qu’il avait de bonnes chances d’aller jusqu’au bout », a ajouté Émond.

Chez les moins de 90 kg, Yonatan Soloveichik a été défait à son seul combat de la journée alors qu’il était opposé au Grecque Alexios Sperlidis.

Du côté féminin, Kiera Burt (-70 kg) a remporté son premier combat de la journée devant la Bulgare Emili Apostolova, mais elle a été surprise par la suite par l’éventuelle médaillée d’argent, Serena Ondei, de l’Italie.

Tirage tout aussi difficile pour Brandi Lingley (+70 kg) qui a profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour alors que son adversaire n’a pas réussi à faire le poids lors de la pesée. Elle a ensuite été opposée à la géante française Grace-Esther Mienandi Lahou, qui l’a emporté et qui a poursuivi sa route vers la plus haute marche du podium.

« Kiera a remporté facilement son premier combat de la journée en quelques secondes. L’Italienne a été très forte, elle a surpris Kiera avec une manœuvre assez unique. Quant à Brandi, elle n’a pas eu de chance en affrontant la Française aussi rapidement dans le tournoi. Elle a réussi à bien se battre quand même, elle a presque réussi à la projeter, mais la différence de poids s’est vraiment fait ressentir », a commenté l’entraîneur.

Également en action chez les moins de 70 kg, Marianne Karas a connu la défaite dès son premier duel devant l’Italienne Morgana De Paoli.

Les Championnats du monde cadets se poursuivent dimanche à Sarajevo avec la présentation de la compétition par équipe. L’entraîneur Alexandre Émond a de grandes attentes pour cette dernière journée de compétition.

« On vise assurément une médaille, ce ne sera pas une journée facile. On commencera la journée en quart de finale contre le gagnant de l’affrontement entre la Bosnie-Herzégovine et l’Azerbaïdjan. On sait que c’est possible, mais il faudra travailler fort », a conclu Émond.

John Jr Messe A Bessong, Cadet World Champion

Montreal, August 27, 2022 – John Jr Messe A Bessong (+90 kg) had a dream 2022 season with many podiums and even a few gold medals. On Saturday, at the Cadet World Championships held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Quebecer continued his momentum to become world champion in the cadets.

Messe A Bessong started the day strong by quickly winning his first two fights against Gereltbayar Ochir of Mongolia and Ramazan Ahmadov of Azerbaijan. Two victories that gave confidence to the Canadian and his coach Alexandre Émond.

« It was pretty easy in his first two fights. He did not spend too much energy and he was very expeditious, which is enough to give us confidence quickly. He managed the start of the day well, » explained the coach.

The 17-year-old continued his epic quarter-final by defeating Emirkhan Zholdoshkaziev of Kyrgyzstan. He then reached the final thanks to his victory over the Japanese Dota Arai, a rather unknown opponent to the Canadian.

« The athlete from Kyrgyzstan was as tall as John, which is quite rare honestly. John managed to beat him strategically by making him take several penalties. Then, the Japanese was left-handed, which is a bit of John’s pet peeve, but he managed to beat him quite easily and he had gained confidence for the final.”

Messe A Bessong completed this perfect day by winning the grand final in front of the Brazilian Gabriel Santos. The latter is clearly the one that gave the most trouble to the Quebecer during the day.

« It’s been a great day for John, I’m really happy for him. He had already trained with the Brazilian in the past. John was coming from behind at the end of the fight, he took a risk by going to the body and the technique worked. He threw the Brazilian to the ground to win by ippon, » said Alexandre Émond.

With his very imposing physique and his excellent record in 2022, John Jr Messe A Bessong arrived in Sarajevo with the gold medal in his sights. He admittedly met all expectations.

« John has an extraordinary physique and he is super athletic for his size. I think he would be successful in all sports. He was coming to Sarajevo to get on the podium, there is no doubt about that. He believed in the gold medal obviously, when he saw the draw, he knew he had a good chance of going all the way, » Émond added.

In the under 90kg category, Yonatan Soloveichik was defeated in his only fight of the day when he faced Greece’s Alexios Sperlidis.

On the women’s side, Kiera Burt (-70 kg) won her first fight of the day against Bulgaria’s Emili Apostolova, but was later surprised by the eventual silver medalist Serena Ondei of Italy.

Brandi Lingley (+70 kg) had an equally difficult draw after she took advantage of a bye in the first round while her opponent failed to make the weight during the weigh-in. She was then pitted against french giant Grace-Esther Mienandi Lahou, who won and continued on to the top of the podium.

« Kiera easily won her first fight of the day in seconds. The Italian was very strong, she surprised Kiera with a rather unique maneuver. As for Brandi, she had no luck facing the Frenchwoman so quickly in the tournament. She managed to fight well anyway and she almost managed to throw her, but the difference in weight was really apparent, « commented the coach.

Also in action in the under 70 kg category, Marianne Karas suffered a defeat in her first duel against Italy’s Morgana De Paoli.

The Cadet World Championships continues on Sunday in Sarajevo with the start of the team competition. Coach Alexandre Émond has high expectations for this last day of competition.

« We are definitely aiming for a medal, it will not be an easy day. We will start the day in the quarter-finals against the winner of the clash between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Azerbaijan. We know it’s possible, but we’ll have to work hard, » Émond concluded.
