Montréal, 10 avril 2022 – Moins de 24 heures après s’être incliné en finale chez les cadets, John Jr. Messé A Bessong (+100 kg) était de retour sur les tatamis péruviens avec l’intention de monter sur la plus haute marche du podium, cette fois dans le cadre des Championnats panaméricains et océaniens juniors de Lima. Le Canadien n’a pas failli à la tâche, complétant sa journée avec trois victoires et l’or au cou.
John Jr. Messé A Bessong n’a laissé aucun doute sur ses ambitions, dimanche. Il a vaincu coup sur coup le Chilien Jose Ignacio Jara et le Colombien Elmer Orejuela par ippon pour obtenir sa place en finale. Il a alors bouclé un tournoi parfait en s’imposant par waza-ari face à l’Américain Christian Konoval.
« Je n’étais pas nécessairement au sommet de ma forme cette semaine, mais je me sentais vraiment mieux aujourd’hui (dimanche). J’ai fait les ajustements nécessaires après ma défaite d’hier et ç’a rapporté. J’étais beaucoup plus rapide et je voulais absolument gagner », a commenté le nouveau championaprès la compétition.
Nikola Petrovic (-100 kg) et Lasha Tsatsalashvili (-73 kg) ont eux aussi atteint la grande finale de leur catégorie respective, sans toutefois être en mesure de ressortir avec la médaille espérée.
Petrovic a vu ses espoirs d’être sacré champion s’envoler à l’issue d’un duel de tous les instants qui s’est soldé par ippon contre le Brésilien Kayo Santos. Le Britanno-Colombien, qui avait préalablement gagné ses deux combats, a ainsi mis la main sur l’argent.
Le scénario s’est avéré similaire pour Lasha Tsatsashvili. Celui qui avait remporté les honneurs chez les cadets la veille a gagné ses trois premiers duels par ippon, mais n’a pu compléter le balayage. L’Ontarien a dû s’avouer vaincu contre le Brésilien Gabriel Falcao en grande finale.
« Nikola et Lasha ont connu une très bonne journée ! Ils ont disputé des combats très serrés contre de bons adversaires et ils ont vraiment démontré tout leur potentiel. C’est une bonne expérience pour la suite et ils ont certainement un brillant avenir devant eux », a analysé l’entraîneur Sasha Mehmedovic au sujet de ses protégés.
Également en action chez les moins de 73 kg, Munkhjin Batdorj a été défait en demi-finale par ce même Falcao. Le Québécois a cependant conclu sa journée en beauté en s’imposant contre l’Argentin Matteo Etchechury pour grimper sur la troisième marche du podium.
Journée de bronze pour Popovic, Keays et Simard
David Popovic (-81 kg), Janessa Keays (+78 kg) et Justine Simard (-70 kg) ont ajouté des médailles de bronze à la récolte canadienne en remportant leur tout dernier combat du jour à Lima.
Défait en quarts de finale contre le Brésilien Kauan Santos, sacré champion de la division quelques heures plus tard, Popovic n’a pas baissé les bras et s’est frayé un chemin jusqu’à la troisième marche du podium. Le Québécois a concrétisé le tout en battant le Panaméen Jose Albis Castro Matos, pénalisé à trois reprises dans ce duel.
Janessa Keays, de la Saskatchewan, a elle aussi terminé sa compétition en force, l’emportant par ippon contre la Péruvienne Idania Ambulay. À son seul autre affrontement du tournoi, l’athlète canadienne avait perdu contre l’éventuelle médaillée d’or Luana Oliveira, du Brésil.
Pour sa part, Justine Simard a été décorée de bronze grâce à une victoire acquise contre sa coéquipière Laurence Biron. Il s’agissait d’un troisième gain de suite pour Simard qui n’a été vaincue qu’à sa première sortie de la journée.
Biron a donc fini cinquième au classement de la division. Ses compatriotes Raphael Gaanan (-60 kg) et Callie Render (-63 kg) ont eux aussi terminé au pied du podium après des revers crève-cœurs dans des finales de bronze.
Gaanan, de la Colombie-Britannique, a perdu contre le Panaméen Eriberto De Aza, alors que Render s’est inclinée contre l’Américaine Emily Daniela Jaspe.
Aussi en action dimanche, l’Albertaine Aliya Koliaska a remporté un seul de ses trois combats et elle a fini en septième place chez les moins de 57 kg. Seule autre Canadienne en lice lors de cette compétition, la Britanno-Colombienne Ekaterina Danilkov (-48 kg) a été éliminée après une défaite d’entrée de jeu.
En vertu de sa récolte de sept médailles, la délégation de l’unifolié a terminé au deuxième rang du classement des nations derrière le Brésil et ses 16 podiums. De quoi rendre fier Sasha Mehmedovic.
« C’était une très bonne journée et nous sommes contents des performances. Nos jeunes athlètes sont venus pour compétitionner et ils ont démontré de très belles choses. C’est une expérience très positive pour eux et ils vont beaucoup apprendre de leur passage au Pérou », a-t-il conclu.

Montréal, April 10, 2022 – Less than 24 hours after his loss in the Cadets final on Saturday, John Jr. Messé A Bessong (+100 kg) was back on the Peruvian tatamis. This time, he had every intention of climbing to the top step of the podium at the PanAmerican-Oceania Junior Championships in Lima. And the Canadian did just that, ending his day with a 3-0 record and a gold medal around his neck.
Messé A Bessong left no doubt as to his objective on Sunday. In back-to-back victories, he defeated Jose Ignacio Jara of Chile and Elmer Orejuela of Columbia by ippon to advance to the final. In his gold medal match against Christian Konoval of the USA, he capped off a perfect tournament by scoring a waza-ari for the win.
“I wasn’t really at my best this week, but I felt a lot better today (Sunday). After losing yesterday, I made the necessary adjustments, and it paid off. I was a lot quicker and I was determined to win,” commented the newly crowned champion after the competition.
Nikola Petrovic (-100 kg) and Lasha Tsatsalashvili (-73 kg)also advanced to the finals in their respective weight divisions, but neither walked away with the coveted gold medal.
Petrovic’s hopes of being crowned champion were dashed after a hard-fought clash with Brazil’s Kayo Santos that was decided by ippon. The British Columbian, who had won his two previous bouts, was awarded the silver medal.
For Tsatsalashvili, the scene played out in similar fashion. The Ontarian, who clinched the cadet championship just yesterday, won his first three bouts by ippon, but was unable to complete the sweep. He bowed out to Brazil’s Gabriel Falcão in the final.
“Nikola and Lasha were great today! They fought some very tough fights against strong opponents and really showed their potential. It was a great learning experience for them. Their futures are definitely bright,” commented coach Sasha Mehmedovic.
Also in action in the under-73 kg pool, Munkhjin Batdorj was defeated by Falcão in the semi-finals. However, the Québécois ended his day on a high note with a victory over Argentina’s Matteo Etchechury and a bronze medal.
Bronze for Popovic, Keays and Simard
David Popovic (-81 kg), Janessa Keays (+78 kg) and Justine Simard (-70 kg) added three more bronze medals to the Canadian team’s haul in Lima.
Although Popovic was defeated in the quarter-finals by Brazil’s Kauan Santos—who was crowned champion of the weight class a few hours later—he did not give up. The Québécois clinched the bronze medal by beating Panama’s Jose Albis Castro Matos, who received three penalties during the bout.
Janessa Keays of Saskatchewan also ended her day in fine form, defeating Idania Ambulay of Peru by ippon to secure the bronze medal. In her only other match of the tournament, she lost to Brazil’s Luana Oliveira, who went on to win the gold medal in the weight division.
As for Simard, she was awarded the bronze medal thanks to a victory over her teammate Laurence Biron. It was the third straight win for Simard, whose only loss of the day was in the first round.
Biron finished the day in fifth place. Her countrymates Raphael Gaanan (-60 kg) and Callie Render (-63 kg) also finished at the foot of the podium after heartbreaking losses in their respective bronze medal finals. Gaanan, of British Columbia, lost to Panama’s Eriberto De Aza, while Render lost to Emily Daniela Jaspe of the USA.
Also in action on Sunday was Aliya Koliaska of Alberta, who won only one of her three bouts and finished seventh in the under-57 kg pool. The only other Canadian in competition today was British Columbia’s Ekaterina Danilkov (-48 kg), who was eliminated after losing her first match of the day.
The Canadian delegation’s total haul of seven medals landed the team in second place, behind Brazil with sixteen. Mehmedovic is proud of the team’s achievement. “It was a great day, and we’re very pleased with their accomplishments. Our young athletes came to compete, and they performed very well. It was a positive experience for them. They’ve learned a lot here in Peru,” he concluded.
