John Jr. Messe A Bessong se classe septième à ses premiers mondiaux juniors

Montréal, 7 octobre 2023 – Dernier judoka canadien en action aux Championnats du monde juniors présentés à Odivelas, au Portugal, John Jr. Messe A Bessong a été stoppé au repêchage des plus de 100 kg samedi afin de conclure au septième rang de sa catégorie.

Couronné champion du monde chez les cadets l’an dernier, John Jr. Messe A Bessong en était à sa première présence aux mondiaux juniors. Il a entamé le tournoi en force en l’emportant par ippon face à Denis Batchaev et a ensuite affronté le Turc Ibrahim Tataroglu.

Ce dernier est passé bien près d’ouvrir la marque lorsqu’il a projeté le Québécois au sol et l’a saisi par le bras, mais Messe A Bessong s’est bien défendu et a réussi à s’en défaire. Avec un peu moins d’une minute à faire, il a tenté une attaque qui a été contrée par son adversaire. Tataroglu a ainsi tiré avantage de la séquence afin d’inscrire un waza-ari. Il a maintenu cette avance jusqu’à la fin du combat.

Au repêchage, John Jr. Messe A Bessong a été vaincu par ippon face au Polonais Grzegorz Teresinski, ce qui est venu mettre un terme à son parcours.

« Il a bien paru, mais il a commis de petites erreurs tactiques qui lui ont coûté deux combats, a souligné l’entraîneur Alexandre Emond. Il a ce qu’il faut pour combattre à ce niveau. Il reste du travail à faire. On ressort tout de même du positif de tout ça ! Il a été capable de tenir son bout contre les meilleurs au monde. »

Le Géorgien Shalva Gureshidze a décroché l’or des plus de 100 kg après avoir vaincu Ibrahim Tataroglu en grande finale.

Étant seulement à sa première année junior, John Jr. Messe A Bessong pourra participer à deux autres Championnats du monde dans cette catégorie avant de faire le saut chez les seniors.

« Il va apprendre de cette expérience et il faudra simplement travailler là-dessus à l’entraînement », a conclu avec confiance Alexandre Emond.

John Jr. Messé A Bessong Seventh at First Junior World Championships

Montréal, October 7, 2023 – On Sunday, John Jr. Messé A Bessong, the final Canadian to hit the tatamis at the Junior World Championships in Odivelas, Portugal,was halted in the repechage, finishing seventh in the over-100 kg weight category.

These were the first Junior World Championships for Messé A Bessong, who won the title at the cadet level in 2022. He got off to a strong start today with a win by ippon over Denis Batchaev, before facing Ibrahim Tataroglu of Turkey.

Tataroglu very nearly opened the scoring by throwing the Québécois to the ground and grabbing him by the arm, but Messé A Bessong defended himself effectively and broke away. With less than a minute to go, Messé A Bessong attempted an attack, but was countered by his opponent, who seized the opportunity to score a waza-ari. Tataroglu held onto his lead until the time ran out.

In the repechage, Messé A Bessong’s day came to an end when he was defeated by ippon by Grzegorz Teresinski of Poland.

“He looked good, but he made some tactical errors that cost him two fights,” explained coach Alexandre Emond. “He’s got what it takes to compete at this level, but there’s still some work to do. But let’s also focus on the positive! He was able to hold his own against the best in the world.”

Shalva Gureshidze of Georgia won gold in the over-100 kg category by defeating Tataroglu in the big final.

Messé A Bessong, who is only in his first year as a junior, will be eligible to compete in two more Junior World Championships before making the leap to the senior level.

“He’ll learn from this experience, and we’ll simply have to work on these things in training,” concluded Emond, with confidence.
