Montréal, 22 avril 2023 – Antoine Bouchard a connu une journée tout simplement parfaite samedi à l’Open panaméricain de Saint-Domingue, en République dominicaine. Le Québécois n’a jamais véritablement été inquiété lors de ses quatre combats et il a terminé la compétition sur la plus haute marche du podium chez les moins de 73 kg.

À son combat initial, Bouchard n’a eu besoin que de 27 secondes pour s’imposer devant le Dominicain Maikor Yefri Louis Pierre. Il a poursuivi sur sa lancée au tour suivant en défaisant Jose Geronimo, lui aussi de la République dominicaine.

Bouchard a fait face à son premier vrai test en demi-finale où il était opposé au Colombien Andres Sandoval. Les deux rivaux étaient nez à nez jusqu’aux derniers instants du combat. Le Canadien a forcé son adversaire à commettre une troisième faute avec 11 secondes à faire et il a ainsi obtenu son billet pour la grande finale.

Bouchard n’a pas perdu de temps lors du duel ultime pour concrétiser sa victoire. Devant le Mexicain Eduardo Araujo, il a été agressif dès le départ pour marquer un ippon après seulement 53 secondes.

« C’est très satisfaisant pour une entraîneur de voir un de ses athlètes remporter la médaille d’or. Antoine a été très dominant dès le début de la journée en battant ses adversaires tactiquement. Personne n’est passé près de le battre et je pense que c’est très bon pour sa confiance après son opération à l’épaule », a commenté l’entraîneur Sasha Mehmedovic.

Un autre représentant de l’unifolié s’est démarqué dans la même catégorie que Bouchard, Justin Lemire a remporté ses deux premiers combats de la journée avant de s’incliner en demi-finale devant Araujo. Le judoka de 22 ans n’a toutefois pas baissé les bras et s’est bien repris dans le duel pour la médaille de bronze en l’emportant face au favori local Antonio Tornal.

Toujours chez les moins de 73 kg, Yanis Hachemi a terminé en septième place après sa défaite au premier tour du repêchage alors que Munkhjin Batdorj a cumulé une fiche d’une victoire et une défaite.

Médaille d’argent pour Julien Frascadore

Le Québécois Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) s’est lui aussi frayé un chemin jusqu’à la finale de sa catégorie où il a dû se contenter de la médaille d’argent après avoir reçu trois pénalités au cours de l’affrontement.

Mario Cordones, du Panama, et Lenin Preciado, de l’Équateur, les deux premiers adversaires de Frascadore à Saint-Domingue, avaient été pénalisés à trois reprises, ce qui a permis au Canadien de poursuivre sa route.

Il a ensuite battu coup sur coup les Dominicains Anderson Pol Guelle et Elmert Ramirez afin de se rendre jusqu’au combat pour la médaille d’or où il s’est incliné devant le Cubain Orlando Polanco.

« Julien a lui aussi connu une bonne journée, il s’est très bien battu du début à la fin. En finale, il a peut-être voulu trop en faire en étant plus agressif lorsque le duel s’est transporté en prolongation. Il avait déjà battu le Cubain auparavant et je suis persuadé qu’il sera en mesure de le battre encore dans le futur », a commenté Mehmedovic.

Dans cette même catégorie, Daniel McCristall a été battu à son deuxième affrontement de la journée.

Chez les moins de 63 kg, Isabelle Harris est également montée sur le podium en vertu de sa médaille de bronze. Après avoir profité d’un laisser-passez au premier tour, la Montréalaise a vaincu la Dominicaine Creymarlin Valdez pour se diriger en demi-finale.

Malheureusement pour Harris, elle a subi la défaite devant l’éventuelle médaillée d’argent Anriquelis Barrios, du Venezuela. À l’image de son compatriote Justin Lemire, Harris s’est relevée de belle façon dans son duel pour la médaille de bronze en battant l’Équatorienne Edith Ortiz après deux waza-aris.

« Je suis très content pour Isabelle, elle a été excellente. Il ne lui en manquait pas beaucoup pour qu’elle puisse atteindre la grande finale. Sa médaille de bronze est bien méritée puisqu’elle s’est très bien battue », a ajouté l’entraîneur.

Dans les autres résultats du jour, Kiera Westlake (-66 kg) et Kimiko Kamstra (-48 kg) ont subi la défaite à leur premier combat de la journée.

L’Open panaméricain de Saint-Domingue se poursuit dimanche alors que Coralie Godbout (-78 kg), David Popovici (-81 kg), Guillaume Gaulin (-90 kg), Nikola Petrovic (-100 kg) et Marc Deschênes (+100 kg) seront en action.

Picture-perfect day for Antoine Bouchard in Santo Domingo

Montréal, April 22, 2023 – Antoine Bouchard had a flawless day on Saturday at the Pan American Open in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Quebecer was never in any danger in his four bouts, and sailed to the top step of the podium in the Under 73 kg class.

In his first bout, Bouchard required a mere 27 seconds to claim victory over Dominican Maikor Yefri Louis Pierre. He followed that win up in the next round, with the defeat of Jose Geronimo, also of the Dominican Republic.

Bouchard faced his first real test only in the semifinals, against Colombian Andres Sandoval, where up until the very last minutes of the bout, the two judokas were neck and neck. The Canadian forced his opponent to commit a fateful third fault with 11 seconds left on the clock, and thus secured his ticket to the grand final.

Bouchard wasted no time in the final duel – Mexico’s Eduardo Araujo experienced Bouchard’s aggressive moves from the start. The Canadian scored an ippon – and the gold – after only 53 seconds.

« It’s very satisfying for a coach to have one of their athletes win a gold medal. Antoine was very dominant from the very beginning of the day, beating his opponents tactically. No one came close to getting the better of him, and I think it’s very good for his confidence, especially after his shoulder surgery, » commented Coach Sasha Mehmedovic.

Another Canadian stood out in the same category as Bouchard; Justin Lemire won his first two bouts of the day before losing in the semi-finals to Araujo. Even after his loss in the semis, the 22-year-old didn’t give up, roaring back in the bronze medal match and winning against local favourite Antonio Tornal.

Also in action in the Under 73 kg category, Yanis Hachemi finished in seventh place after losing the first bout of the repechage, while Munkhjin Batadorj ended the day with a record of one win and one loss.

A silver medal for Julien Frascadore

Quebec’s Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) also made his way to the finals in his weight category, where he had to settle for the silver medal after receiving three penalties during the match-up on the tatami.

Both Mario Cordones (Panama) and Lenin Preciado (Ecuador) were penalized three times in their respective bouts with Frascadore (the latter’s first two), which enabled the Canadian to continue on his steady trek towards an eventual podium.

The Canuck then had back-to-back wins over Dominican Anderson Pol Guelle and Elmert Ramirez to advance to the gold medal bout, where he saw his golden dreams slip away in a loss to Cuba’s Orlando Polanco.

« Julien also had a good day, he fought very well from start to finish. In the final, he may have wanted to do too much by being more aggressive when the bout went into overtime. He’s beaten the Cuban before and I’m sure he’ll be able to beat him again in the future, » commented Mehmedovic.

In the same category, Daniel McCristall was defeated in his second bout of the day.

In the Under 63 kg category in women’s judo action, Isabelle Harris scored herself a podium spot with her bronze medal win. After taking a bye in the first round, the Montrealer defeated Creymarlin Valdez (Dominican Republic) to advance to the semi-finals.

Harris ended up losing the next bout to eventual silver medalist Anriquelis Barrios of Venezuela. However, just like her teammate Justin Lemire, Harris returned to winning ways in style in her bronze medal match, defeating Ecuador’s Edith Ortiz after two waza-aris.

« I’m very happy for Isabelle, she was honestly excellent today. She didn’t need much to reach the grand final, and she definitely earned her bronze medal because she fought very well, » added the Canadian coach.

In other results Saturday, Kiera Westlake (-66 kg) and Kimiko Kamstra (-48 kg) lost their first bouts of the day.

The Santo Domingo Pan American Open continues on Sunday with Coralie Godbout (-78 kg), David Popovici (-81 kg), Guillaume Gaulin (-90 kg), Nikola Petrovic (-100 kg) and Marc Deschênes (+100 kg) stepping onto the tatami with judo victories on their minds!
