Montréal, 17 mai 2026 – La dernière journée des Championnats canadiens ouverts a été marquée par les prestations en or de plusieurs représentants du Québec, dimanche, à l’Anneau olympique de Calgary. Dans les compétitions seniors au programme, les Québécois ont obtenu sept médailles d’or, femmes et hommes confondus.
Dans les tableaux féminins, les Québécoises ont remporté quatre des sept titres nationaux à l’enjeu grâce à Melody Grenier (-52 kg), Laurence Gagnon (-57 kg), Laurence Biron (-63 kg) et Missy Jen Dorval-Mbele (-70 kg). Les athlètes de la province ont aussi mis la main sur six médailles d’argent et cinq de bronze.
Zoe Element (Nouveau-Brunswick, -48 kg), Emiliya Aliyeva (Alberta, -78 kg) et Olivia Wisniowski (Colombie-Britannique, +78 kg) sont elles montées sur la plus haute marche du podium.
« Je suis arrivée à la compétition avec l’état d’esprit de vouloir gagner », a mentionné Laurence Biron, qui pouvait compter sur la présence de membres de sa famille cette fin de semaine. « De savoir qu’ils sont là, ça me met en confiance. Je me battais pour les rendre fiers. »
L’athlète de 22 ans souhaite maintenant que ce résultat devienne pour elle un tremplin vers ses prochaines compétitions.
« C’était une bonne préparation pour moi, car j’irai combattre en Amérique du Sud à la fin juin. J’étais ici pour retrouver mes repères et établir mes stratégies. Je suis bien contente de cette préparation pour mes prochains tournois », a conclu celle qui sera aux Opens panaméricains de Buenos Aires et de Santiago.
Chez les hommes, les Québécois ont conclu cette dernière journée avec trois médailles d’or, trois de bronze et huit d’argent. Xavier Brouillette (-60 kg), Anes Mati (-66 kg) et Olivier Gagnon (-81 kg) ont tous été invaincus dans leur parcours.
L’Ontario a aussi fait belle figure grâce aux titres de Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg) et Merab Iokhmusashvili (+100 kg). Lowan Le Bris (Colombie-Britannique, -73 kg) et Alexandre Briand (Manitoba, -100 kg) et ont été les gagnants.
Samedi, Merab Iokhmusashvili avait été décoré d’argent des +100 kg chez les moins de 21 ans et il avait encore de l’énergie en banque dimanche pour à nouveau monter sur le podium.
« Je suis venu ici pour gagner. Quand j’ai commencé la compétition, je savais que je deviendrais champion », a soutenu l’athlète qui a fait ses débuts sur la scène internationale l’automne dernier. « Mon père, mon entraîneur et ma famille ont toujours été là et leur soutien est très important pour moi. »
Iokhmusashvili ne compte pas s’arrêter là, car il visera un bon résultat aux prochains Championnats du monde juniors, en novembre prochain, en Ouzbékistan.

Judo Canada – Canadian Open National Championships
From National Titles to Even Greater Heights
Montréal, May 17, 2026 – The final day of the Open National Championships was marked by outstanding performances by several Quebec athletes at the Olympic Oval in Calgary. In Sunday’s senior-level competitions, a total of seven gold medals were won by judokas from Quebec, both female and male.
In the women’s events, four of the seven national titles went to Québécoises: Melody Grenier (-52 kg), Laurence Gagnon (-57 kg), Laurence Biron (-63 kg), and Missy Jen Dorval-Mbele (-70 kg). Female athletes from la belle province also captured six silver and five bronze medals.
The other three gold medals were won by Zoe Element (New Brunswick, -48 kg), Emiliya Aliyeva (Alberta, -78 kg), and Olivia Wisniowski (British Columbia, +78 kg).
“My mindset coming here was that I wanted to win,” said Biron, whose family was in attendance this weekend. “Knowing [my family] is here is very good for my confidence. I wanted to make them proud.”
The 22-year-old judoka hopes her results today serve as a springboard for her upcoming competitions.
“This was good preparation for me, because I’ll be competing in South America at the end of June. I wanted to use this event to get my bearings and figure out my strategies. I think this preparation will serve me well in my next few tournaments,” added Biron, who will compete at the Pan-American Opens in Buenos Aires and Santiago.
In the men’s competitions, athletes from Quebec earned three gold medals, three bronze, and eight silver. Xavier Brouillette (-60 kg), Anes Mati (-66 kg), and Olivier Gagnon (-81 kg) all remained unbeaten on the final day of the Open.
Ontario also fared well, thanks to titles won by Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg) and Merab Iokhmusashvili (+100 kg). Lowan Le Bris (British Columbia, -73 kg) and Alexandre Briand (Manitoba, -100 kg) captured the two remaining gold medals.
Despite having nabbed silver in the U21 +100-kg category on Saturday, Iokhmusashvili had enough energy left over on Sunday to climb to the very top of the podium.
“I came here to win. Right from the start of the competition, I knew I’d become the champion,” said Iokhmusashvili, who began competing internationally last fall. “My dad, my coach, and my family have always been there for me, and their support means everything to me.”
Iokhmusashvili does not intend to rest on his laurels, as he’ll be aiming for a strong result at the upcoming Junior World Championships in Uzbekistan this November.
