Montréal, 4 octobre 2023 – En signant une victoire en prolongation à son premier match des Championnats du monde juniors, l’Albertaine Evelyn Beaton avait bon espoir d’aller loin dans le tableau des moins de 52 kg, mardi, à Odivelas, au Portugal.
Après avoir profité d’un laissez-passer, la Canadienne a vaincu la Suisse Binta Ndiaye en prolongation. Une victoire capitale pour Beaton, car c’est cette même adversaire qui avait mis fin à son parcours aux mondiaux juniors l’an dernier.
La journée de Beaton s’est toutefois arrêtée au troisième tour à la suite de sa défaite contre l’Israélienne Ruth Vay.
« La fille qu’Evelyn devait battre pour se rendre loin dans le tableau, c’était la Suisse qui a été deux fois médaillée de bronze aux Championnats du monde juniors. Nous savions que ce serait un match difficile et Evelyn a fait ce qu’il fallait pour gagner. Malheureusement, ça ne s’est pas aussi bien passé au combat suivant. Peut-être qu’elle était trop excitée après avoir battu la meilleure fille de son tableau », a analysé l’entraîneur canadien Sasha Mehmedovic.
« Elle a bien suivi le plan de match et elle aurait potentiellement pu se battre pour une médaille. Mais aux Championnats du monde, ça n’a pas d’importance qui tu affrontes. Que ton adversaire soit dans le top-10 mondial ou non, il faut que tu gagnes ton combat si tu veux avancer », a poursuivi l’entraîneur à propos de sa protégée qui a été médaillée d’or aux Championnats panaméricains et océaniques juniors, le mois dernier, à Calgary.
« C’est un gros jeu mental d’être en confiance, de garder le cap sur son plan de match et de bien le mettre en pratique. »
Dans la catégorie des moins de 48 kg, Charlize Isabelle Medilo (Alberta) et Heidi Quach (Québec) ont toutes les deux perdu leur unique affrontement. Des deux, c’est Medilo qui était la plus près d’accéder à la ronde suivante.
« Le match aurait pu tourner en sa faveur, sauf qu’elle a fait une erreur tactique et la Géorgienne en a profité », a reconnu Mehmedovic à propos de l’Albertaine qui était opposée à Mariami Potshverashvili.
Quach a pour sa part baissé pavillon contre Konul Aliyeva de l’Azerbaïdjan qui conclura sa journée au cinquième rang.
« Son adversaire était physiquement plus forte et elle n’a pas pu trouver de solutions pour la contrer. C’était donc un affrontement plus difficile pour elle. »
Mahée Savoie (-57 kg) et Lasha Tsatsalashvili (-73 kg) seront les deux représentants du pays qui combattront jeudi au Portugal.

Evelyn Beaton stopped in her tracks
Montréal, October 4th, 2023 – Following her opening match triumph in overtime at the World Junior Championships, Alberta’s Evelyn Beaton had high hopes of going the distance in the under-52 kg draw on Tuesday in Odivelas, Portugal.
After taking advantage of a bye, the Canadian defeated Switzerland’s Binta Ndiaye in overtime. It was a crucial victory for Beaton, as it was this same opponent who ended her run at last years’ World Juniors.
However, Beaton’s day came to an end in the third round when she lost to Israel’s Ruth Vay.
“The girl Evelyn had to beat to go a long way in the competition was a Swiss who was a two-time bronze medallist at the World Junior Championships. We knew it would be a tough battle and Evelyn did what she had to do to win. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as swiftly in the next bout. Maybe she was too excited after beating the best competitor in her draw”, stated Canadian coach Sasha Mehmedovic.
“She followed the game plan well and could potentially have fought for a medal. But at the World Championships, it doesn’t matter who you’re up against. Whether your opponent is a top-10 player in the world or not, you have to win your fight if you want to advance,” added the coach about his protégée, who claimed gold at last month’s Pan-American and Oceanic Junior Championships in Calgary.
“It’s so tough to remain mentally strong and confident, to stay on course with your game plan and execute it well.”
In the under 48 kg category, Charlize Isabelle Medilo (Alberta) and Heidi Quach (Quebec) both lost their only contest. Of the two, it was Medilo who came closest to advancing to the next round.
“The match could have gone in her favor, but she made a tactical error and the Georgian took advantage of it,” admitted Mehmedovic of the Albertan, who was opposed to Mariami Potshverashvili.
Meanwhile, Quach lost to Azerbaijan’s Konul Aliyeva, who would finish the day in fifth place.
“Her opponent was physically stronger and she couldn’t find any solutions to counter her. It was a tougher match for her.”
Mahée Savoie (-57 kg) and Lasha Tsatsalashvili (-73 kg) will be the country’s two representatives in Portugal on Thursday.
