Judo Canada – World Championships

One Win and One Loss for Kyle Reyes Against Former World Champions

Montréal, October 9, 2026 – Kyle Reyes was the only Canadian to secure a win on the penultimate day of the World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. On Friday, the Ontarian posted a 1-1 record in the under-100 kg division, while Quebec’s Coralie Godbout was defeated in her first and only bout of the day.

Reyes got off to a great start, defeating Jorge Fonseca of Portugal twenty-six seconds into overtime. It was a sweet victory for Reyes—who won a gold medal at this summer’s Commonwealth Games—as it was the first time in four career meet-ups that he defeated the former two-time world champion and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist.

“Earlier this week, I mentioned that all our athletes had difficult draws, but Kyle’s was probably the toughest of all. However, he notched up a great first win, and he appeared to be off to a good start,” noted coach Antoine Valois-Fortier, pointing out that Reyes had worked very hard and displayed both patience and excellent hand positioning today.

Like his teammates Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard and Jessica Klimkait earlier this week, the 2022 World Championships silver medallist faced an especially difficult draw in his bracket. This was due to the fact that he had been forced to take a break after his back surgery, which caused him to move down in the world rankings.

In Reyes’ second-round match on Friday, Russia’s Arman Adamian, the 2023 world champion, brought the Canadian’s day to an end by scoring an ippon midway through the bout.

“That was a really, really tough fight. Kyle started off strong and set the pace, but champions are defined by their ability to seize any opportunity to win a match, and the Russian was able to throw him for an ippon. Unfortunately, that brought Kyle’s day to an end.”

Ilia Sulamanidze of Georgia captured the category’s gold medal by defeating Dota Arai of Japan. Niiaz Bilalov of Russia and Gennaro Pirelli of Italy secured the two bronze medals.

As for Godbout, after receiving a first-round bye, she was defeated by Anna Kazakova of Ukraine in the under-78 kg category. Earlier this season, the 25-year-old Québécoise bested Kazakova at a tournament in Austria.

“Coralie told me she was disappointed not to have been able to beat [Kazakova] today,” said Valois-Fortier.

Yelyzaveta Lytvynenkom of the United Arab Emirates defeated Kaila Issoufi of France to capture the divisional gold medal. Kurena Ikeda of Japan and Anna Monta Olek of Germany finished the day with bronze.

On Saturday, John Jr. Messé A Bessong (+100 kg) will be the final Canadian to hit the tatamis at the World Championships in Baku.
