Evelyn Beaton, vice-championne panaméricaine

Montréal, 19 avril 2026 – L’Albertaine Evelyn Beaton a été médaillée d’argent des moins de 52 kg, dimanche, aux Championnats panaméricains de judo disputés à Panama. Dans son combat pour la médaille d’or, l’athlète de 21 ans avait la lourde tâche d’affronter la Brésilienne Larissa Pimenta, de 6 ans son aînée et surtout, médaillée de bronze aux Jeux olympiques de Paris.

Beaton a procuré au Canada une sixième médaille à ces Championnats après une d’or et quatre de bronze obtenues la veille.

La Canadienne a bien combattu et a attaqué sans relâche, mais la défense hermétique de la Brésilienne n’a pu être percée malgré les efforts répétés de Beaton qui tirait de l’arrière par un yuko avec 2 minutes à faire au temps réglementaire. L’expérimentée Pimenta a ensuite projeté Beaton dans les dernières secondes du combat pour un deuxième yuko et ainsi sceller sa victoire.

« C’était un gros combat contre une adversaire de très haut niveau. Evelyn a été dans le coup, mais elle s’est fait marquer dans la première portion du combat et elle n’a pas été en mesure de revenir », a convenu l’entraîneur national Antoine Valois-Fortier.

« Une fois que la Brésilienne était en avance, elle a juste fermé son jeu et a beaucoup travaillé au sol pour écouler le temps. Elle a livré un bon combat et fait de bonnes attaques, mais l’expérience de son adversaire a fait la différence. Evelyn progresse bien et d’être encore en finale, c’est un bon signe » a poursuivi le médaillé de bronze olympique des Jeux de 2012.

Dans ce même tableau, la Québécoise Rima Bourihane éliminée à son premier duel.

À l’édition 2025 des Championnats panaméricains, Beaton avait remporté l’or. Elle avait aussi été sacrée championne à l’édition junior du tournoi en 2023.

Les Québécois Arthur Margelidon et François Gauthier-Drapeau ont tous les deux été finalistes pour une médaille de bronze chez les moins de 81 kg, sauf qu’ils ont été défaits et se sont classés cinquièmes.

Opposé à l’Américain Johan Silot, Margelidon a vu sa médaille lui échapper dans les premières secondes de la prolongation lorsqu’il s’est fait marquer un yuko. En demi-finale, l’athlète de 32 ans avait perdu aux pénalités contre le Dominicain Medickson del Orbe Cortorreal.

Margelidon avait atteint le carré d’as après avoir vaincu Gauthier-Drapeau en quart de finale après plus de 3 minutes de prolongation.

Dans l’autre finale pour une médaille de bronze qui l’opposait au Brésilien David Lima, Gauthier-Drapeau a été projeté pour ippon en début de combat. Précédemment, le Québécois avait vaincu le Portoricain Adrain Gandia à son premier duel du repêchage.

L’entraîneur croyait que les deux olympiens finiraient plus haut au classement.

« On peut le dire, c’est un petit peu décevant. Je m’attendais à voir les gars sur le podium et même l’emporter. Leur duel en quart de finale a été un gros combat. Ils se connaissent beaucoup et c’était donc un combat très fermé », a commenté Valois-Fortier, ajoutant être déçu de voir son équipe être limitée à une seule médaille dimanche.

Ekaterina Danilkov qui était en action chez les femmes de moins de 48 kg a remis une fiche d’une victoire et deux revers. Elle a d’abord vaincu l’Argentine Mikaela Rojas et s’est ensuite inclinée face à la Chilienne Mary Dee Vargas Ley, future médaillée d’argent. Une fois au repêchage, la Vancouvéroise a été stoppée par l’Équatorienne Laura Vasquez.

Dans le tableau des moins de 57 kg, la Néo-Brunswickoise Hayden Thibeault a entamé sa journée avec une victoire pour ensuite voir son parcours prendre fin contre la Brésilienne Sarah Souza, qui a fini sur la deuxième marche du podium. Quant à la Québécoise Laurence Gagnon, elle a été éliminée à son premier duel.

Dans la catégorie masculine des 100 kg, John Messe A. Bessong et Ryan Proulx ont tous les deux perdu leur premier combat.

En conclusion, Valois-Fortier voit d’un très bon œil la collaboration entre les athlètes de différentes générations dans son groupe, surtout dans la cohorte féminine.

« On a un beau mélange d’expérience et de nouveaux talents dans le groupe des filles et c’était le fun de les voir sur le tapis pour performer, tant les plus expérimentées que les plus jeunes. Il y a une belle énergie au sein de l’équipe et si ce groupe-là peut s’aider à progresser ensemble, c’est cool ! »

Evelyn Beaton, Runner-Up Pan-American Champion

Montréal, April 19, 2026 – Alberta’s Evelyn Beaton captured the silver medal in the under-52 kg category at the Pan-American Judo Championships in Panama on Sunday. In her gold medal match, the 21-year-old faced the daunting task of battling Brazil’s Larissa Pimenta, who is six years her senior and, notably, won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.

Beaton secured Canada’s sixth medal at this weekend’s championships, following the one gold and four bronze medals collected by the Canadian team yesterday.

In the big final, Beaton fought valiantly and attacked relentlessly, but despite her repeated efforts, the Brazilian’s impenetrable defenses could not be breached. Beaton trailed by a yuko with two minutes remaining in regulation time. Then, in the final seconds of the match, Pimenta, the more experienced of the two athletes, threw Beaton for a second yuko, thus sealing her victory.

“[Evelyn] had a tough match against a very high-level opponent. She held her own for the most part, but she conceded a point early in the match and wasn’t able to come back,” said national team coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

“Once the Brazilian took the lead, she simply tightened up her game and spent a lot of time on the ground, in order to run down the clock. [Evelyn] put up a good fight and launched some solid attacks, but her opponent’s experience ultimately made the difference. Evelyn has been making great progress, however, and the fact that she was in the finals again is a very good sign,” added the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist.

In the same weight category, Quebec’s Rima Bourihane was eliminated in her first bout of the day.

At the 2025 Pan-American Championships, Beaton won the gold medal. She was also crowned champion of the 2023 Junior Pan-American Championships.

On the men’s side today, Quebec’s Arthur Margelidon and François Gauthier-Drapeau advanced to the two under-81 kg bronze medal finals. However, both judokas lost their matches and finished fifth.

Against Johan Silot of the USA, Margelidon saw his medal chances slip away in the opening seconds of overtime, when his opponent scored a yuko. Earlier, in his semi-final match against Medickson del Orbe Cortorreal of the Dominican Republic, the 32-year-old had lost on penalties. Margelidon had advanced to the final four after defeating Gauthier-Drapeau in the quarter-finals, following more than three minutes of overtime.

In the other bronze medal match, Brazil’s David Lima scored an early ippon by throwing Gauthier-Drapeau. Earlier, Gauthier-Drapeau had defeated Adrain Gandia of Puerto Rico in his first repechage match.

The Canadian coach expected that the two male Olympians would finish higher in the standings.

“To be honest, it’s a bit of a disappointment. I had expected the guys to at least make it onto the podium, if not win it all. Their quarter-final battle against each other was a tough one. They know each other very well, so it was very close,” noted Valois-Fortier, adding that he was disappointed to see his team limited to just one medal on Sunday.

In the women’s under-48 kg weight class, Ekaterina Danilkov finished with one win and two losses. She defeated Argentina’s Mikaela Rojas before losing to Chile’s Mary Dee Vargas Ley, who later won the silver medal. In the repechage, the judoka from Vancouver was halted by Laura Vasquez of Ecuador.

In the under-57 kg group, New Brunswick’s Hayden Thibeault kicked off her day with a win, before falling to Brazil’s Sarah Souza, who finished second in the category. Quebec’s Laurence Gagnon was eliminated in her first match of the day.

In the men’s over-100 kg category, John Jr. Messé A Bessong and Ryan Proulx were both defeated in their first bouts.

In conclusion, Valois-Fortier takes a very positive view of the collaboration between the athletes of different generations in his group, particularly among the women.

“There’s a great combination of experience and new talent in the women’s group, and it was great to see them all perform well on the tatamis—both the more experienced athletes and the younger ones. The team has great energy, and if they can help each other progress, that’s awesome!”
