Montréal, 18 avril 2026 – Au terme d’un affrontement marathon de plus de 10 minutes contre la Brésilienne Rafaela Silva, Jessica Klimkait a remporté la médaille d’or des moins de -63 kg aux Championnats panaméricains de judo, samedi, dans la ville de Panama. Sur le podium, l’Ontarienne a été accompagnée de la Québécoise Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard, médaillée de bronze, tout comme la Vénézuélienne Anriquelis Barrios.
Les Québécois Charlie Thibault (-70 kg), Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) et Justin Lemire (-73 kg) ont tous été médaillés de bronze dans leur catégorie respective.
Invité à commenter le combat pour la médaille d’or de Klimkait, l’entraîneur Antoine Valois-Fortier a couvert d’éloges sa protégée qui a vaincu la championne olympique moins de 57 kg à Rio en 2016.
« C’était tout un affrontement ! Jessica a été méthodique, déterminée et courageuse, alors qu’elle a mis en place le plan de match du début à la fin. Même si son adversaire résistait, elle a persisté et c’est vraiment grâce à sa volonté qu’elle a décroché la victoire », a reconnu l’entraîneur à propos de la médaillée de bronze olympique (-57 kg) de Tokyo.
« On parle de deux athlètes qui peuvent être finalistes à n’importe quel tournoi et c’était vraiment un combat de très haut niveau. C’était le fun de voir Jessica performer comme ça. »
Il s’agit du deuxième titre continental pour Klimkait après celui remporté en 2017 chez les moins de 57 kg, également à Panama City et où elle avait alors vaincu sa compatriote Beauchemin-Pinard en grande finale. Samedi, ces deux athlètes se sont retrouvées en demi-finale et Klimkait a surpris Beauchemin-Pinard par ippon après 23 secondes.
La Québécoise s’est ressaisie dans son dernier duel du jour où elle a eu raison de l’Américaine Karlee Carrouth par ippon.
« Il ne faut surtout pas penser que des Catherine et des Jessica sont la norme. Ce sont deux athlètes qui ont marqué leur sport et de les voir performer comme ça aussi longtemps et avec la même attitude de chercher à s’améliorer, c’est vraiment cool et impressionnant. »
Charlie Thibault (-70 kg) a impressionné avec sa médaillée de bronze remportée face à l’Équatorienne Cellinda Corozo.
« Elle n’a que 18 ans et elle est médaillée aux Championnats panaméricains seniors. C’est une belle performance et elle a battu des filles beaucoup plus expérimentées qu’elle et elle a su démontrer son talent et sa détermination. Elle a seulement été battue par une Brésilienne qui a dix ans d’expérience internationale de plus qu’elle », a relaté l’entraîneur à propos de la vice-championne du monde cadets de l’an dernier
Coralie Godbout est elle aussi montée sur la troisième marche du podium dans la catégorie des moins de 78 kg.
« Sa journée a commencé lentement, mais elle s’est reprise en main avec deux victoires convaincantes. »
Chez les hommes, Justin Lemire (-73 kg) est sorti vainqueur par ippon de son dernier duel du jour contre le Péruvien Alonso Wong, ce qui lui a permis de mettre la main sur le bronze. L’athlète de 25 ans avait vu ses espoirs de médaille d’or s’évanouir après sa défaite contre l’Américain et futur médaillé d’argent, Jack Yonezuka, en demi-finale.
« C’est une des meilleures journées de la carrière de Justin, sans l’ombre d’un doute », a déclaré son entraîneur.
Dans cette même catégorie, Yanis Hachemi a été stoppé à son premier combat alors qu’il se mesurait à Maikor Yefri Louis Pierre de la République dominicaine.
Dans le tableau des moins de 66 kg, Julien Frascadore a lutté pour une médaille de bronze contre l’Américain Ari Berliner, mais il a été défait par ippon et a fini cinquième. Le Québécois s’est blessé aux abdominaux sur la manœuvre de son adversaire et il a immédiatement stoppé le combat. Luke Thomson a pour sa part conclu sa journée avec une fiche de 0-1.
Matteo Fantozzi (-60 kg) a lui aussi été défait à son premier combat.
La dernière journée des compétitions individuelles sera présentée dimanche.

Jessica Klimkait claims gold after marathon match
Montréal, April 18, 2026 – Following a grueling 10-minute battle against Brazil’s Rafaela Silva, Jessica Klimkait won the gold medal in the under-63 kg division at the Panamerican Judo Championships on Saturday in Panama City. The Ontario native was joined on the podium by Quebec’s Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard, who won bronze, as did Venezuela’s Anriquelis Barrios.
Quebecers Charlie Thibault (under-70 kg), Coralie Godbout (under-78 kg), and Justin Lemire (under-73 kg) were all awarded bronze medals in their respective weight classes.
When asked to comment on Klimkait’s gold medal fight, coach Antoine Valois-Fortier heaped praise on his protégée, who defeated the 2016 Rio Olympic champion in the under-57 kg division.
“It was quite a battle! Jessica was methodical, determined, and courageous as she executed her game plan from start to finish. Her opponent put up a good fight, but she kept persisting and used her willpower to secure the victory,” acknowledged the coach about the Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist (-57 kg).
“We’re talking about two athletes who could be finalists at any tournament, and it was truly a top-level match. It was awesome to see Jessica perform like that.”
This is Klimkait’s second continental title, following her 2017 Panama City triumph over Beauchemin-Pinard in the under-57 kg division. On Saturday, the two athletes faced off in the semi-finals, and Klimkait surprised Beauchemin-Pinard with an ippon after just 23 seconds.
The Quebec native bounced back in her final match of the day, defeating American Karlee Carrouth by ippon.
“We should never presume that Catherine and Jessica are the norm. These two athletes have left their mark on their sport, and seeing them perform at this level for so long—while maintaining the same drive to improve—is truly amazing and impressive.”
Charlie Thibault (-70 kg) wowed everyone with her bronze medal victory over Ecuador’s Cellinda Corozo.
“At only 18 years old, she’s a medallist at the Panamerican Senior Championships. That’s a great achievement—she beat girls with much more experience and showcased her talent and determination. She was only beaten by a Brazilian who has ten more years of international experience than she does,” commented the coach regarding last year’s junior world runner-up.
Coralie Godbout also climbed onto the third step of the podium in the under-78 kg category.
“She got off to a slow start, but turned things around with two convincing wins.”
On the men’s side, Justin Lemire (-73 kg) won his final match of the day by ippon against Peru’s Alonso Wong, securing the bronze medal. The 25-year-old athlete had seen his hopes for gold dashed after his defeat to eventual silver medalist Jack Yonezuka of the United States in the semi-finals.
“This is without a doubt one of the best days of Justin’s career,” stated his coach.
In the same weight class, Yanis Hachemi succumbed in his opening tussle against Maikor Yefri Louis Pierre of the Dominican Republic.
In the under-66 kg division, Julien Frascadore lost by ippon to American Ari Berliner in the bronze medal match and had to settle for fifth position. The Quebec native sustained an abdominal injury following one of his opponent’s manoeuvres and immediately threw the towel. Meanwhile, Luke Thomson ended his day with a 0-1 record.
Matteo Fantozzi (-60 kg) also suffered defeat in his first bout.
The final day of individual competitions will take place on Sunday.
