Judo Canada - Grand Prix de Lima
Montréal, 14 août 2026 – Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) a été le seul Canadien à obtenir un classement, une septième place, au premier jour du Grand Prix de Lima, vendredi, au Pérou. Le Québécois a conclu sa journée avec une fiche de 2 victoires et 2 défaites.
Médaillé d’argent à ce tournoi l’an dernier, le judoka de 26 ans a eu besoin de la prolongation pour vaincre son premier adversaire par ippon, Willis Garcia, du Vénézuéla, qu’il battait pour première fois en trois affrontements depuis le début de sa carrière. Frascadore a poursuivi son parcours à la ronde suivante en disposant aisément de l’Argentin Ignacio Freggiaro.
Le troisième combat du médaillé d’or et porte-drapeau de l’équipe canadienne à la cérémonie de clôture des récents Jeux du Commonwealth à Glasgow s’annonçait plus corsé, alors qu’il se mesurait au Moldave et médaillé de bronze aux Jeux olympiques de Paris, Denis Vieru. Ce dernier l’a emporté par ippon.
Au repêchage, Frascadore n’a pu retrouver le chemin de la victoire et a perdu par yuko contre le Portugais Miguel Nery Gago après un peu moins d’une minute de prolongation.
« Le Moldave était un adversaire de taille. Selon moi, Julien était largement en avance. Il a marqué un point dès la première séquence et il contrôlait bien le match, mais il a fait une erreur et s’est fait contrer », a reconnu l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier à propos du troisième combat de son protégé contre l’éventuel médaillé d’argent.
« (Au repêchage), encore une fois, j’ai trouvé que Julien se débrouillait bien et était en avance dans le rythme du combat. Ensuite, il y a eu un point litigieux qui aurait pu aller d’un côté comme de l’autre et c’est allé du côté de son adversaire. C’est une journée un peu frustrante pour Julien, car on sentait tous qu’il avait le niveau pour aller loin. »
Les Canadiennes en action vendredi ont toutes été défaites à leur premier combat. L’Albertaine Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) est celle qui est passée le plus près d’accéder au tour suivant. Son affrontement contre la Brésilienne Rafaela Rodrigues a eu des allures d’un match marathon de plus de 10 minutes, sauf que l’athlète de 21 ans a été défaite par waza-ari contre celle qui a conclu sa journée sur la première marche du podium.
« C’était un combat très serré avec des passages au sol. Evelyn a tenté sa chance vers la fin en prenant un risque et elle s’est malheureusement fait renverser », a ajouté l’entraîneur.
Dans le tableau des moins de 48 kg, la Québécoise Heidi Quach a perdu contre la Britannique Ashleigh Barnikel. Quant à la Britanno-Colombienne Ekaterina Danilkov (-48 kg), elle s’est inclinée face à la Colombienne Erika Lasso.
Catherine Toshkov (-63 kg), Laurence Biron (-63 kg), Félix Mercier-Ross (-73 kg), Justin Lemire (-73 kg), Olivier Gagnon (-81 kg) et François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) sont les Canadiens qui combattront samedi dans la capitale péruvienne.

Julien Frascadore seventh in Peru
Montréal, August 14, 2026 – Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) was the only Canadian judoka to see the day’s end with a ranking—seventh place—on the first day of the Lima Grand Prix on Friday in Peru. The Québecois athlete ended their day with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses.
A silver medalist at this same tournament last year, the 26-year-old judoka needed overtime to defeat his first opponent, Willis Garcia (Venezuela), by ippon—notably clocking his first victory over Garcia in three career matchups. As a result of the win, Frascadore advanced to the next round, where he had an easy victory over Ignacio Freggiaro (Argentina.)
Frascadore was a gold medalist, and closing ceremony flag-bearer for Team Canada at the recent Glasgow Commonwealth Games, but the third bout on the tatami Friday proved to be a less glamourous outing. The Canadian faced off against Denis Vieru (Moldova), himself a bronze medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Vieru claimed victory with a win by ippon.
In the repechage, Frascadore was unable to find his way back to winning ways, and lost by yuko to Portugal’s Miguel Nery Gago after just under a minute of overtime.
Regarding his protégé’s third bout against eventual silver medalist Vieru, Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier acknowledged, “The Moldovan was a tough opponent. In my opinion, Julien was well ahead – he scored a point right in the first round and was controlling the match well, but he made a mistake and got countered.”
Valois-Fortier noted “(In the repechage), again, I thought Julien was doing well and was setting the pace of the bout. Then there was a controversial call that could have gone either way, and unfortunately it went his opponent’s way. It was a bit of a frustrating day for Julien, because we all felt he had what it takes to go far today.”
Team Canada’s women had a difficult day Friday, with all judokas sadly losing their first matches. Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) of Alberta came the closest to advancing to the next round, in her bout against Brazil’s Rafaela Rodrigues. The match was more like a marathon, and lasted over a whopping 10 minutes, but the 21-year-old Canuck was defeated by her opponent’s waza-ari – the latter of whom ended her day on the first step of the podium.
“It was a very close match with some ground work. Evelyn tried out a move toward the end, and took a risk, but unfortunately she was thrown,” added the coach.
In the Under-48-kg division, Québec’s Heidi Quach lost to England’s Ashleigh Barnikel. As for British Columbia’s Ekaterina Danilkov (-48 kg), she lost to Colombia’s Erika Lasso.
Tomorrow is another day, and more chances for Canadian judokas to shine. Catherine Toshkov (-63 kg), Laurence Biron (-63 kg), Félix Mercier-Ross (-73 kg), Justin Lemire (-73 kg), Olivier Gagnon (-81 kg) and François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) are the Team Canada judokas who will step on the tatami Saturday in the Peruvian capital.
