Deux Canadiens stoppés par des médaillés à Zagreb

Montréal, 20 août 2023 – Deux des quatre Canadiens qui combattaient au Grand Prix de judo de Zagreb ont vu leur parcours s’arrêter à la suite d’une défaite contre un éventuel médaillé d’argent, cette fin de semaine, en Croatie.

Samedi, dans le tableau des moins de 73 kg, le Québécois Yanis Hachemi a signé une victoire par waza-ari contre l’Italien Edoardo Mella après avoir profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour. En deuxième ronde, il s’est incliné par ippon contre l’Algérien Messaoud Redouane Dris qui terminera la journée sur la deuxième marche du podium à la suite de sa défaite en finale contre l’Espagnol Jorge Cano Garcia.

Le judoka ontarien Mohab ElNahas, qui s’est fait le porte-parole de l’équipe canadienne, a commenté la prestation de son coéquipier âgé de 21 ans qui aurait bien pu sortir vainqueur de cet affrontement.

« Yanis était en train de gagner et il s’est ensuite fait projeter dans les 10 dernières secondes. L’Algérien qu’il était sur le point de battre était le plus fort de la catégorie, car il a battu des Olympiens dans le tableau. »

Dimanche, chez les moins de 90 kg, ce fut au tour d’ElNahas de voir son parcours être stoppé par un futur médaillé d’argent.

ElNahas a remporté son combat contre l’Ukrainien Artem Bubyr par forfait pour ensuite être défait par le Turc Mihael Zgank qui s’est imposé après le que l’Ontarien ait reçu trois pénalités.

« (Zgank), c’est mon ami. Nous nous sommes beaucoup affrontés dans des camps préparatoires et je sais très bien comment il se bat. Je me sentais plus fort que lui et physiquement, je n’avais pas de problème à avoir ma prise sur lui. Par contre, il avait sa technique au sol où il se plaçait sur le dos et à chaque fois, je n’avais pas le temps d’attaquer. Je suis un peu frustré, car j’ai trouvé que j’étais le plus fort. »

Le Turc a répété le même manège à chaque ronde et ce sont ses adversaires qui ont été pénalisés pour non-combativité.

« Il n’a pas fait une projection du tournoi, mais ç’a fonctionné pour lui et il a été chanceux cette fois-ci », a ajouté le Canadien de 27 ans, qui quittera la Croatie avec un sentiment doux-amer. « J’ai pu tester ma forme contre lui (Zgank) qui est dans le top-10 mondial et la prochaine fois, il faut juste que j’attaque en premier et je pense vraiment pouvoir le battre. »

Zgank a poursuivi son parcours jusqu’en finale où il a conclu sa journée avec une médaille d’argent après avoir perdu contre le Hongrois Krisztian Toth.

Toujours chez les moins de 90 kg, l’Ontarien Keagan Young a été défait au premier tour par le Néerlandais Tigo Renes.

« Il s’est bien battu et il a fait un waza-ari dans le premier échange du combat. Son adversaire faisait une tête de plus que moi et ensuite, il a inscrit deux waza-ari contre Keagan. Ensuite, il (Renes) a été très défensif et il a pris avantage de ça », a soutenu ElNahas.

Finalement, chez les moins de 81 kg, le Québécois David Popovici a plié l’échine à son premier combat alors qu’il était opposé au Serbe Andrey Pirolo Del Rosso.

ElNahas mettra le cap sur le Portugal afin de prendre part à un tournoi du circuit européen, tandis que ses trois coéquipiers seront de retour au pays.

Two Canadians Halted by Silver Medallists in Zagreb

Montréal, August 20, 2023 – Two of the four Canadians in action at the Zagreb Grand Prix in Croatia were halted in their tracks this weekend by future silver medallists.

After receiving a first-round bye on Saturday, Quebec’s Yanis Hachemi defeated Italy’s Edoardo Mella by waza-ari in the under-73 kg weight class. In the next round, he lost by ippon to Messaoud Redouane Dris of Algeria, who was later awarded the silver medal after bowing out to Jorge Cano Garcia of Spain in the final.

Ontario’s Mohab ElNahas, acting as spokesperson for the Canadian team, commented on the performance of his 21-year-old teammate, who could well have clinched the bout.

“Yanis was winning, but he got thrown in the final ten seconds. The Algerian he almost defeated was the strongest guy in the category, because he beat all the Olympians in the draw.” 

On Sunday, in the under-90 kg weight division, ElNahas was himself denied victory by a future silver medallist.

He began his day by defeating Ukraine’s Artem Bubyr by default, only to be edged out in the next round by Turkey’s Mihael Zgank, who won the match when ElNahas received a third penalty.

“[Zgank] is a friend of mine. We’ve fought each other many times at training camps, and I know his fighting style very well. I felt stronger than him, and physically, I had no problem getting a good grip on him. But his ground technique involved getting onto his back, so each time, I didn’t have time to attack. I’m a bit frustrated, because I felt like I was the stronger fighter.” 

Zgank used the same approach in each round, causing his opponents to be penalized for non-combativity.

“He didn’t perform a single throw all tournament, but it worked for him, and he was lucky this time,” added the 27-year-old Canadian, who will depart Croatia with a bittersweet feeling. “I got to test myself against [Zgank], who is one of the top ten in the world. Next time, I just have to attack first, and I really think I could beat him.” 

Zgank advanced all the way to the final, where he lost to Krisztian Toth of Hungary and finished the day with the silver medal.

Also in under-90 kg action, Ontario’s Keagan Young lost to Tigo Renes of the Netherlands in the first round.

“Keagan fought well, and he scored a waza-ari in the first exchange of the bout. His opponent, who’s a head taller than me, then scored two waza-ari. [Renes] then remained on the defensive, taking advantage of that,” explained ElNahas.

In the under-81 kg category, David Popovici lost his first and only bout of the day to Andrey Pirolo Del Rosso of Serbia.

ElNahas will now head to Portugal to take part in a tournament on the European circuit. His three teammates will return home to Canada.
