Montréal, 2 août 2026 – Le vétéran Kyle Reyes (-100 kg) a offert une quatrième médaille d’or au Canada en judo en ce dernier jour des Jeux du Commonwealth. Dimanche, à Glasgow, l’Ontarien a eu raison de l’Anglais Max Gregory par ippon en grande finale des moins de 100 kg.
L’autre médaille canadienne du jour a été l’œuvre de Coralie Godbout (-78 kg), qui a eu besoin de la prolongation pour vaincre l’Indienne Ishroop Narang dans sa finale pour une médaille de bronze.
John Jr Messe A Bessong a pour sa part terminé cinquième dans le tableau des +100 kg dans cette journée qui a aussi été marquée par la nomination de Julien Frascadore à titre de porte-drapeau du Canada à la cérémonie de clôture des Jeux. Vendredi, le judoka s’était couvert d’or dans la catégorie des moins de 66 kg.
L’entraîneur Antoine Bouchard n’avait que de bons mots pour commenter les prestations de Reyes, médaillé d’argent quatre ans plus tôt, aux Jeux du Commonwealth de Birmingham.
« Je pense que Kyle était dans une classe à part aujourd’hui (dimanche). Il n’a jamais été en danger et a toujours été en contrôle. Il a fait une journée parfaite ! »
À la mi-combat de son ultime affrontement, le vétéran de 32 ans a fait perdre l’équilibre à son adversaire et l’a projeté sur le dos. Précédemment dans le tableau, il avait signé des victoires par ippon contre la Gambien Abdourahman Ceesay et le Chypriote Georgios Kroussaniotakis.
Reyes, vice-champion du monde de la catégorie en 2022, était tout sourire après son duel. Il a été opéré au dos et est revenu à la compétition au Grand Prix de Qingdao, en Chine, en juin, où il avait perdu en première ronde face au futur médaillé d’or. Sa prestation de dimanche saura le remettre en confiance.
« On a revu le Kyle des beaux jours. Il a été sensationnel! » a ajouté l’entraîneur.
Coralie Godbout a été l’autre médaillée canadienne du jour.
La Québécoise a été à l’attaque dès les premières secondes et est passée bien près de marquer face à l’Indienne qui se défendait bien au sol. En prolongation, Godbout s’est fait surprendre à la deuxième minute lorsque Narang l’a projetée, sans toutefois marquer. Godbout s’est immédiatement ressaisie à la reprise du combat pour à son tour faire tomber son adversaire et inscrire un yuko qui a officialisé sa place sur le podium.
À sa sortie du tatami, elle est tombée dans les bras de l’entraîneuse Erika Miranda.
« Son adversaire a commencé à ajuster sa stratégie et elle en faisait juste assez pour pousser le combat un peu plus loin, mais sans réel danger de projection. Coralie a été patiente et elle a réussi à l’emporter », a analysé Bouchard.
En quart de finale, l’athlète de 25 ans avait défait l’Anglaise Shelley Ludford par yuko pour ensuite s’incliner par waza-ari en demi-finale face à l’Australienne et éventuelle médaillée d’argent, Maria Swan.
Dans son combat pour une médaille de bronze des plus de 100 kg face au représentant de Tonga, Paula Monta, John Jr Messe A Bessong a réussi à éviter de peu une première immobilisation complète et revenir dans le match en inscrivant un waza-ari. Monta a toutefois pu protéger son avance jusqu’au bout des 4 minutes réglementaires, ce qui lui a permis d’offrir une première médaille à son pays à ces Jeux depuis 2010.
Le Canada quittera Glasgow avec une récolte de sept médailles : quatre d’or, deux d’argent et une de bronze.
« On croyait aux chances de tous les athlètes d’accéder au podium. C’est donc sept médailles sur neuf et les deux non-médaillés ont été en finale de bronze, alors c’est dur de demander mieux. Pour ceux et celles qui aspirent à une qualification aux Jeux olympiques de 2028, ces Jeux sont une belle étape qu’ils ont franchie, surtout pour les plus jeunes qui n’avaient pas d’expérience à des jeux multisports. Ils ont été capables de faire du beau judo », a mentionné Bouchard en conclusion.

Kyle Reyes Nabs Fourth Gold Medal for Canada Coralie Godbout Collects Bronze
Montréal, August 2, 2026 – Veteran judoka Kyle Reyes captured Canada’s fourth gold medal in judo on the final day of the Commonwealth Games. On Sunday in Glasgow, the Ontarian—who won silver at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games four years ago—bested Max Gregory of Great Britain by ippon in the under-100 kg gold medal showdown.
The Canadian judo squad also collected a bronze medal on Sunday, thanks to Coralie Godbout, who defeated Ishroop Narang of India in the under-78 kg category.
In the over-100 kg weight division, John Jr. Messé A Bessong finished fifth.
Meanwhile, judoka Julien Frascadore was named Canadian flag bearer for the closing ceremonies of the Games. On Friday, he won gold in the under-66 kg category.
Coach Antoine Bouchard had nothing but good things to say about Reyes’ performance on Sunday.
“I think Kyle was in a league of his own today. He was never in any real danger, and he remained completely in control. He had a perfect day!”
Halfway through the gold medal match, the 32-year-old veteran knocked his opponent off balance, then threw him onto his back. Earlier in the tournament, he had defeated Abdourahman Ceesay of Gambia and Georgios Kroussaniotakis of Cyprus, both by ippon.
Reyes, the under-100 kg runner-up champion in 2022, was all smiles following his match today. After undergoing back surgery, he had returned to competition in June at the Qingdao Grand Prix in China, where he lost his first-round bout to the eventual gold medallist. His performance on Sunday will surely restore his confidence.
“Today, we saw the old Kyle again. He was sensational!” added the coach.
In the under-78 kg division, Coralie Godbout needed extra time to defeat India’s Ishroop Narang in the bronze medal match. The Québécoise attacked in the opening seconds of the bout and came very close to scoring; however, Narang defended herself effectively on the ground. In the second minute of overtime, Godbout was caught off guard when Narang threw her, although no points were scored. When the match resumed, Godbout immediately shook it off, knocking Narang down in turn and scoring a yuko that secured her a spot on the podium.
As she exited the tatamis, she fell into the arms of her coach Erika Miranda.
“[Coralie’s] opponent began to adjust her strategy, and she did just enough to drag out the match, but without any real threat of throwing her. Coralie remained patient and ultimately won,” said Bouchard.
In the quarter-finals, the 25-year-old had defeated England’s Shelley Ludford by yuko before losing her semi-final bout by waza-ari to Australia’s Maria Swan, who went on to win the silver medal.
As for John Jr. Messé A Bessong, his fight for the over-100 kg bronze medal against Tonga’s Paula Monta saw him narrowly avoid a full pin and get back into the match by scoring a waza-ari. Nevertheless, Monta successfully defended his lead until the end of the four-minute regulation period, securing his country’s first Commonwealth Games medal since 2010.
Canada will depart Glasgow with a total of seven medals: four gold, two silver, and one bronze.
“We truly believed all our athletes had a shot at the podium. We ended up with seven medals out of nine possible ones, and the two athletes who didn’t win medals made it to the bronze medal finals, so we really couldn’t have asked for much more. For the athletes who hope to qualify for the 2028 Olympics, these Games have been an important milestone, especially for the younger ones who had no prior experience at multi-sport events. They performed some great judo,” concluded Bouchard.
