Montréal, 21 décembre 2022 – Au lendemain de la victoire de l’Albertaine Christa Deguchi chez les moins de 57 kg, c’était au tour d’Arthur Margelidon de fouler le podium au Tournoi des maîtres, mercredi, à Jérusalem, en Israël. Le combattant montréalais a obtenu une des deux médailles de bronze à l’enjeu dans le tableau des moins de 73 kg.
« Ça s’est bien passé, mais comme d’habitude, quand ce n’est pas l’or, on veut tout le temps ce que l’on n’a pas. Mais de finir l’année avec une médaille, c’est quand même assez bon pour ma confiance et les tournois qui s’en viennent ! » a indiqué Margelidon après sa journée de compétition.
Face au Moldave Petru Pelivan dans son dernier affrontement du jour, Margelidon a marqué un waza-ari dans les premiers instants. Il a ensuite contrôlé son adversaire au sol pendant un moment pour ensuite étirer sa domination jusqu’à la fin des 4 minutes réglementaires, forçant même Pelivan à prendre deux pénalités.
« Je ne voulais pas prendre de risques inutiles, car à ce niveau-là, tu peux te faire marquer à la moindre erreur. Je devais donc avoir mon plan de match jusqu’à la fin », a précisé Margelidon.
Les trois premiers affrontements du Québécois avaient nécessité la tenue d’une prolongation. Margelidon a commencé le tournoi en l’emportant par ippon après presque 8 minutes d’affrontement contre le Roumain Adrian Sulca dans ce qu’il a qualifié du combat le plus difficile de sa journée.
« J’ai presque fait deux combats dans un combat, mais je n’ai jamais senti que j’étais en danger. »
Le Montréalais a ensuite défait Murodjon Yuldoshev, de l’Ouzbékistan, grâce à un waza-ari. Une fois en demi-finale, il a subi sa seule défaite du jour aux mains du Brésilien et futur médaillé d’or, Daniel Cargnin.
« Le Brésilien était quand même à ma portée et c’est une erreur de mouvement de ma part », a reconnu le Québécois.
Il s’agit de la deuxième médaille de Margelidon obtenue en quatre participations au Tournoi des maîtres après celle d’argent à Guangzhou, en Chine, en 2018.
« Maintenant, il ne me reste plus que l’or à aller chercher ! » a lancé à la blague celui qui est septième au classement mondial des moins de 73 kg, heureux de retrouver le niveau de forme qu’il avait avant les Jeux olympiques de Tokyo.
« J’ai une belle régularité avec une septième place aux Championnats du monde, une deuxième place au Grand Chelem de Bakou et un bon tournoi à Tokyo (Grand Chelem), où j’aurais probablement pu aller chercher une médaille. »
En action chez les moins de 81 kg, François Gauthier-Drapeau a conclu la journée avec une fiche d’une victoire et une défaite à Jérusalem. Après être sorti victorieux de son duel contre l’Ukrainien Hievorth Manukian, il s’est mesuré au Belge Matthias Casse, deuxième au monde dans cette catégorie. Ce dernier a réussi un waza-ari après deux minutes de combat et a conservé son avance jusqu’à la fin du temps réglementaire pour l’emporter.
De son côté, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) a d’abord battu la Néerlandaise Geke Van Den Berg par ippon en moins de deux minutes, puis s’est inclinée devant l’Israélienne Gili Sharir.
Une fois arrivée au repêchage, la vice-championne du monde a affronté la Polonaise Angelika Szymanska et a perdu par ippon pour conclure en septième place.
Trois judokas canadiens seront du tournoi des maîtres jeudi. Kyle Reyes et Shady ElNahas combattront chez les moins de 100 kg, alors que Marc Deschênes prendra part à la compétition du côté des plus de 100 kg.

Promising Bronze Medal for Arthur Margelidon at Masters Tournament
Montréal, December 21, 2022 – Just one day after Alberta’s Christa Deguchi claimed victory in the under-57 kg weight division, Arthur Margelidon also stepped onto the podium at the Masters Tournament in Jerusalem, Israel. The Montréaler clinched one of the two bronze medals in the under-73 kg division on Wednesday.
“Things went well, but as usual, when it’s not gold, you always want what you don’t have. But ending the year with a medal is good for my confidence and bodes well for the upcoming tournaments!” said Margelidon at the end of his day of competition.
In his final fight of the day, Margelidon scored a waza-ari against Petru Pelivan of Moldova just a few seconds into the match. He retained control over his opponent on the ground for several moments and dominated the contest until the end of four-minute regulation time, even forcing Pelivan to take two penalties.
“I didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks, because at that level, the slightest error can result in points against you. I therefore had to stick to my game plan right to the end,” explained Margelidon.
The Québécois’ first three bouts all went into overtime. Margelidon began the tournament with a victory by ippon over Adrian Sulca of Romania in an almost eight-minute bout he called the toughest of his day.
“It was almost two fights in one, but I never felt like I was in danger.”
He then defeated Murodjon Yuldoshev of Uzbekistan by waza-ari. In the semi-final, he suffered his only loss of the day to Daniel Cargnin of Brazil, who later won the gold medal.
“The Brazilian was within my reach, but I made a wrong move,” admitted Margelidon.
Today’s medal is Margelidon’s second in four Masters Tournaments. He won silver in Guangzhou, China, in 2018.
“Now, all that’s left for me is gold!” joked Margelidon, who is ranked seventh internationally in the under-73 kg weight class, and who expressed satisfaction at being back at his pre-Tokyo Olympics level of fitness.
“I’ve been consistent lately, with seventh place at the World Championships, second place at the Baku Grand Slam and a strong tournament in Tokyo (Grand Slam), where I probably could have won a medal.”
In the under-81 kg category, François Gauthier-Drapeau ended his day in Jerusalem with a record of one win and one loss. After defeating Hievorth Manukian of Ukraine, he took on Matthias Casse of Belgium, the second-ranked judoka in the world in the weight class. Casse scored a waza-ari two minutes into the fight and was able to maintain his lead until the end of regulation time.
Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) ousted Geke Van Den Berg of the Netherlands by ippon in less than two minutes, then bowed out to Gili Sharir of Israel. In the repechage, the runner-up world champion faced Angelika Szymanska of Poland. She lost by ippon and finished seventh.
Three Canadian judokas will compete at the Masters Tournament on Thursday: Kyle Reyes and Shady El Nahas in the under-100 kg group, and Marc Deschênes in the over-100 kg division.
