Montréal, 14 septembre 2024 –Cette fin de semaine, plusieurs judokas représentent la feuille d’érable lors du Grand Chelem de Zagreb, dans la capitale croate. Chez les moins de 73 kg, le judoka Justin Lemire a signé la meilleure performance canadienne, ce samedi, en remportant le seul combat du jour.

« Aujourd’hui, il y avait cinq personnes en liste. Malheureusement, il y a eu une seule victoire. Ce n’est pas un grand week-end pour le moment. Nous avons plusieurs petites performances décevantes, mais il reste Coralie et Mohab dimanche », a mentionné l’entraîneur de l’unifolié, Antoine Valois-Fortier.

Ayant d’abord profité d’un laissez-passer, le Québécois Justin Lemire s’est imposé sur le tatami en remportant son premier duel par waza-ari, au terme des quatre minutes réglementaires, face à l’Espagnol Adrian Veste.

« Le fait saillant aujourd’hui, c’est la victoire de Justin contre son adversaire qui l’a remporté au sol en fin de combat », a ajouté Valois-Fortier.

C’est en deuxième ronde que le judoka âgé de 23 ans a vu son parcours se terminer par ippon dans un rendez-vous contre le Polonais Wiktor Mrowczynski qui lui a terminé sa journée au septième rang dans cette même catégorie.

Toujours chez les moins de 73 kg, Yanis Hachemi a pu profiter d’un laissez-passer, ce samedi, avant de s’incliner dans son premier duel du jour, par ippon, contre l’Italien Giovanni Esposito qui a été médaillé d’argent.

Leur coéquipier, Julien Frascadore, a vécu un scénario similaire, vendredi, chez les moins de 66kg.Le médaillé d’argent des Jeux panaméricains de Santiago a profité d’un laissez-passer avant de s’incliner dans son premier duel contre le Hongrois Balint Gombas.

« Ça a été un long combat qu’il a malheureusement perdu au sol après un très, très long combat », a poursuivi l’entraîneur de l’équipe canadienne.

Isabelle Harris (-63 kg), David Popovici (-81 kg), Keagan Young (-81 kg) ont, de leur côté, été éliminés après leur premier combat de la journée.

Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) et Mohab ElNahas (-90 kg) seront en action dimanche, en Croatie.

Justin Lemire Claims Canada’s Only Win Saturday at Zagreb Grand Slam

Montréal, September 14, 2024 –Several Canadian judokas are taking part in the Zagreb Grand Slam this weekend in Croatia’s capital city. Justin Lemire, who competes in the under-73 kg weight category, put in the country’s best performance on Saturday, as the only Canadian to win a bout.

“There were five people on our roster today. Unfortunately, we only had one win. So far, it hasn’t been a great weekend. Some of our performances have been a bit disappointing, but we still have Coralie and Mohab to go on Sunday,” said Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

After receiving a first-round bye, Quebec’s Lemire won his opening match by waza-ari against Spain’s Adrian Veste after four minutes of regulation time.

“Today’s highlight was Justin’s defeat of his opponent on the ground near the end of the bout,” added Valois-Fortier.

The 23-year-old judoka’s day came to an end in the second round, however, when Poland’s Wiktor Mrowczynski bested him by ippon. Mrowczynski later finished seventh overall.

Also in the under-73 kg category, Yanis Hachemi received a bye on Saturday before bowing out by ippon to Italy’s Giovanni Esposito in his first match of the day. Esposito went on to win the silver medal.

The two Canadians’ teammate Julien Frascadore met a similar fate on Friday in the under-66 kg weight division.The Santiago Pan-American Games silver medallist benefited from a bye before losing his first bout of the day to Hungary’s Balint Gombas.

“It was a very, very long match that he unfortunately lost on the ground after several minutes,” explained the Canadian coach.

Isabelle Harris (-63 kg), David Popovici (-81 kg),and Keagan Young (-81 kg) were all eliminated in their first matches of the day.

Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) and Mohab ElNahas (-90 kg) will be in action on Sunday in Croatia.
