Montréal, 9 février 2025 – Ennuyé par une blessure à un pied dès le début de la journée, Keagan Young n’a pas baissé les bras à l’Open européen de Ljubljana, en Slovénie, dimanche. Young a disputé cinq combats chez les moins de 81 kg, pour conclure sa journée sur la troisième marche du podium.

Opposé au Suisse Thien Oulevey en finale de bronze, Young n’a pas perdu de temps pour s’imposer. Respectant son plan de match à la lettre, l’Ontarien de 23 ans a réussi un ippon après 1 min 20 s de combat pour décrocher la sixième médaille de sa carrière dans un Open continental.

« Keagan a très bien géré son adversaire. Il savait un peu à quoi s’attendre parce qu’un de ses coéquipiers avait affronté Oulevey plus tôt dans la journée et on a pu préparer le plan de match en conséquence. Keagan est un athlète extrêmement explosif, et il n’a pas raté l’opportunité de prendre le contrôle de ce combat », a mentionné l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Bouchard.

En début de journée, Young a vaincu coup sur coup l’Italien Matteo Frontaurea, l’Israélien Ofir Arie et l’Américain Johan Silot. Il a toutefois été défait en demi-finales par le Polonais Pawel Drzymal, éventuel médaillé d’or de la catégorie.

« Keagan a connu une excellente journée où il a réussi plusieurs projections. Il s’est blessé à un pied au tout début de la compétition, mais on ne connait pas exactement la nature de la blessure. Malgré ça, il est allé chercher plusieurs victoires, dans la douleur, c’est tout à son honneur », a ajouté Bouchard.

Trois autres athlètes canadiens combattaient dans la même catégorie. Olivier Gagnon a remporté ses deux premiers duels avant de s’incliner au troisième tour face à Oulevey.

De son côté, David Popovici a profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour lorsque son adversaire, le Slovène Aljaz Plantak, ne s’est pas présenté. Il a ensuite subi la défaite face à l’Allemand Vladimir Stark.

À sa première compétition chez les moins de 81 kg, Arthur Margelidon a baissé pavillon d’entrée de jeu devant Vladyslav Kolobov, de l’Ukraine.

Chez les moins de 90 kg, Guillaume Gaulin a remporté ses deux premiers combats de la journée avant de s’incliner en quart de finale face à l’Espagnol Daniel Nieto Trinidad. Le Québécois a également subi la défaite au repêchage alors qu’il était opposé au Belge Noah Christiaens.

Du côté féminin, Marie-Lune Turmel et Heidi Quach ont subi des sorts similaires dans le tableau des moins de 48 kg.

Turmel a remporté ses deux premiers combats face à l’Espagnole Marta Beorlegui et à l’Italienne Sofia Petitto. De son côté, Quach a vaincu coup sur coup l’Italienne Anna Iovino et l’Espagnole Zuleima Del Carmen Falcon Sanchez pour obtenir son billet pour les demi-finales.

Quach était alors opposée à la Française Marine Gilly alors que Turmel avait rendez-vous avec la sœur de Marine, Coralie. Les deux Québécoises ont perdu leur affrontement respectif et se sont tournées vers les combats pour les médailles de bronze où elles ont encore connu des résultats identiques, s’inclinant toutes les deux pour conclure en cinquième place.

« Elles ont signé deux belles victoires en début de journée avant de perdre contre les sœurs Gilly. Il y avait un peu d’amertume. Ç’a été des combats serrés pour les médailles de bronze, Marie-Lune a perdu en prolongation et Heidi a vu son adversaire réussir un yuko en fin de combat pour se sauver avec la victoire », a raconté Antoine Bouchard.

Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) a terminé en septième place. Elle a remporté son premier affrontement face à la Française Pauline Cuq avant de plier l’échine en quarts de finale contre la Hongroise Janka Juttner. Elle s’est également inclinée au repêchage contre la Roumaine Luciana Catana.

De son côté, Kelly Deguchi (-57 kg) a été limitée à un seul combat à Ljubljana, s’inclinant face à la Suisse Binta Ndiaye.

Keagan Young Captures Bronze Despite Injury

Montréal, February 9, 2025 – Despite being hampered by a foot injury from the very outset of the competition, Keagan Young remained undeterred at the European Open in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Sunday. He competed in five bouts in the under-81 kg category, finishing his day on the third step of the podium.

In his bronze medal match against Switzerland’s Thien Oulevey, Young quickly took control. Following his game plan to the letter, the 23-year-old Ontarian scored an ippon after a minute and 20 seconds of combat to win the sixth medal of his career in a Continental Open.

“Keagan managed his opponent very well. He had an idea of what to expect because one of his teammates had fought Oulevey earlier in the day, so we were able to come up with an appropriate game plan. Keagan is a very explosive athlete, and he didn’t waste his opportunity to take control of the match,” explained Canadian coach Antoine Bouchard.

Young began his day with back-to-back victories over Matteo Frontaurea of Italy, Ofir Arie of Israel, and Johan Silot of the U.S.A. However, he was defeated in the semi-final by Pawel Drzymal of Poland, who later won the category’s gold medal.

“Keagan had an excellent day, and he made a lot of great throws. He hurt his foot at the very beginning of the competition, and we’re not yet sure of the exact nature of the injury, but even though he was in pain, he won several matches today, so kudos to him,” added Bouchard.

Three other Canadian athletes were in action in the same weight class. Olivier Gagnon won his first two bouts before bowing out to Oulevey in the third round.

David Popovici received a first-round bye when his opponent, Aljaz Plantak of Slovenia, failed to show up. He then lost to Vladimir Stark of Germany.

In his first competition in the under-81 kg weight category, Arthur Margelidon was defeated by Vladyslav Kolobov of Ukraine.

In the under-90 kg bracket, Guillaume Gaulin won his first two bouts of the day before losing to Daniel Nieto Trinidad of Spain in the quarter-final. The Québécois was also defeated in the repechage by Noah Christiaens of Belgium.

On the women’s side, Marie-Lune Turmel and Heidi Quach met similar fates in the under-48 kg division.

Turmel won her first two bouts against Marta Beorlegui of Spain and Sofia Petitto of Italy, while Quach ousted Anna Iovino of Italy and Zuleima Del Carmen Falcon Sanchez of Spain in back-to-back matches, to secure her spot in the semi-finals.

In that round, Quach was up against Marine Gilly of France, while Turmel took on Marine’s sister Coralie. The two Québécoises lost their respective matches. They therefore turned their attention to their bronze medal bouts, where they again met with identical results, both losing to finish in fifth place.

“They notched up two fine victories at the start of the day, before losing to the Gilly sisters. So there was some frustration there. Both of their bronze medal bouts were very tight. Marie-Lune lost in overtime, and Heidi’s opponent scored a yuko at the very end to clinch the win,” said Bouchard.

Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) finished in seventh place. She won her first match against Pauline Cuq of France, but lost to Janka Juttner of Hungary in the quarter-final. In the repechage, she bowed out to Luciana Catana of Romania.

Kelly Deguchi (-57 kg) lost her first and only bout in Ljubljana to Binta Ndiaye of Switzerland.
