Kelly Deguchi relève les défis et remporte son premier titre international

Montréal, 11 février 2023 –Après un départ ardu, Kelly Deguchi est lentement mais sûrement parvenue à trouver son rythme pour s’imposer devant ses adversaires et filer vers le tout premier triomphe international de sa carrière chez les seniors, samedi, à l’Open européen de Sofia, en Bulgarie.

La judoka canadienne a été parfaite à ses quatre sorties sur les tatamis et elle a mis un point d’exclamation à sa compétition en triomphant grâce à un spectaculaire ippon contre l’Italienne Kenya Perna en grande finale de la catégorie des moins de 52 kg.

« On savait que c’était une fille très forte et qu’elle serait prête pour le style de Kelly. Par contre, on était aussi bien préparés et Kelly a fait de l’excellent travail. Elle a bien géré le combat et elle n’a pas laissé de marge de manœuvre à sa rivale. Elle a lancé de bonnes attaques et a fini le travail en réussissant sa plus belle projection de la compétition pour l’emporter », a analysé l’entraîneur Janusz Pawlowski au terme du tournoi.

Le pilote a avoué qu’il ressortira de Sofia avec quelques cheveux blancs en plus, particulièrement en raison d’un lent début de journée pour sa protégée. « On a eu droit à des combats assez dramatiques », a-t-il lancé en riant lorsque questionné sur le travail de Deguchi.

L’Albertaine, 32^e au classement de la Fédération internationale de judo (IJF), a amorcé son tournoi en revenant de l’arrière pour vaincre la Roumaine Luciana Catana par ippon en prolongation. Elle a ensuite réservé le même traitement à l’Espagnole Paula Lanza Chacoris, qui a dû s’avouer vaincue après un peu plus de 2 minutes de combat.

Puis, en demi-finale, Deguchi se dirigeait facilement vers son troisième gain de suite, jusqu’à ce que son opposante, la Hongroise Roza Gyertyas, prenne le contrôle des hostilités et force la tenue d’une prolongation. Les deux athlètes ont alors usé de patience et plus de quatre minutes ont passées avant que Deguchi parvienne à concrétiser une attaque pour gagner par ippon et atteindre le duel ultime.

« Ç’a été des montagnes russes ! Kelly a eu un début de compétition difficile et elle a perdu une bonne avance en demi-finale, mais elle s’en est quand même bien sortie. Elle devra améliorer sa tactique et prendre du rythme plus rapidement, mais elle n’est vraiment pas loin de quelque chose. Après tout, c’est elle qui termine avec la médaille d’or », a conclu Pawlowski.

Pour leur part, Antoine Bouchard et Justin Lemire étaient en action au tableau des moins de 73 kg, où ils n’ont pu obtenir de classement.

Après avoir profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour, Bouchard a battu le Belge Zelemkhan Batchaev, avant de se frotter au Roumain Lucian Bors Dumitrescu. Ce dernier a surpris le judoka de l’unifolié pour l’emporter et éventuellement aboutir sur la troisième marche du podium.

De son côté, Lemire est sorti vainqueur de son duel de premier tour face à l’Égyptien Ammar Abohashim, mais a plié l’échine dès son combat suivant contre le Roumain Adrian Sulca, septième au classement général.

Dimanche, ce sera au tour de Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) et Alexandre Arencibia (-90 kg) de tenter de monter sur le podium de l’Open européen de Sofia.

Kelly Deguchi rises to the challenge and earns first international title

Montréal, February 11, 2023 –After a tricky start, Kelly Deguchi slowly but surely found her rhythm and bettered her opponents, and in so doing, took home her first-ever international triumph in her senior career this Saturday, at the Sofia European Open (Bulgaria).

The Canadian judoka had a great scorecard in all four of her tatami outings, and put an exclamation point on her participation with a spectacular triumphing via ippon over Italy’s Kenya Perna in the grand final of the Under 52kg category.

« We knew the Italian judoka was a very strong girl, and that she’d be ready for Kelly’s style. However, we ourselves were well prepared, and Kelly did a great job. She handled the bout well and didn’t give her opponent any room to maneuver. She launched solid attacks and finished the job with her best throw of the competition for the win, » analyzed Coach Janusz Pawlowski after the tournament.

The coach humourously admitted that he’ll be leaving the Sofia competition with a few more grey hairs, due in part to the difficult start his protégée had, « We lived some pretty dramatic bouts, » he laughed when asked about Deguchi’s run of matches.

Ranked 32nd internationally by the International Judo Federation (IJF), the Alberta native started her tournament by coming from behind to defeat Romania’s Luciana Catana in overtime with an ippon. Deguichi then faced the same story once again in a match against Spain’s Paula Lanza Chacoris, who tasted defeated at the Canuck judokas’ hands after just over 2 minutes of fighting.

In the semi-final, Deguchi was easily on her way to her third straight win, until opponent Roza Gyertyas from Hungary took control of the match and forced things into overtime. Both athletes were patient, and over four minutes passed before Deguchi was able to land an attack to win by ippon and reach the ultimate duel.

« It was a bit of a roller coaster ride! Kelly had a rocky start to the competition and lost a good lead in the quarterfinals, but she still came through it well. She’ll have to improve her tactics and get into a faster rhythm, but she’s definitely not far off. She did earn herself the gold, » concluded Pawlowski.

In men’s judo action, Antoine Bouchard and Justin Lemire stepped onto the tatami in the Under 73kg draw, where neither were able to earn a ranking.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Bouchard defeated Belgium’s Zelemkhan Batchaev before taking on Romania’s Lucian Bors Dumitrescu. The latter surprised the Canadian judoka for the win in that bout, and Dumitrescu went on to win the bronze.

Lemire won his first-round duel against Egypt’s Ammar Abohashim, but lost his next bout to Romania’s Adrian Sulca, the latter being ranked seventh internationally overall.
