Montréal, 18 février 2023 – L’Ontarien Kyle Reyes a conclu un superbe séjour de l’équipe canadienne au Grand Chelem de Tel-Aviv, en Israël, offrant une cinquième médaille au pays, samedi, au troisième et dernier jour de compétition. Le vice-champion mondial des moins de 100 kg a été décoré du bronze dans cette catégorie.
Reyes a dû passer par le repêchage et c’est contre l’Israélien Peter Paltchik, ainsi que ses nombreux supporteurs, que le Canadien s’est mesuré pour l’obtention d’une médaille de bronze. Le Canadien a très bien contré les tentatives de projection de son adversaire et c’est avec un peu moins d’une minute à faire au temps réglementaire qu’il a surpris Paltchik d’une contre-attaque pour le faire tomber au sol et ensuite l’immobiliser pour le ippon.
« La plupart du temps, je sentais que j’étais en contrôle de mon opposant », a commenté Kyle Reyes, heureux de se retrouver sur le podium pour la cinquième fois de sa carrière en Grand Chelem.
« C’est une superbe journée pour Kyle, particulièrement à son combat pour le bronze. Il s’agissait d’un adversaire qu’il n’avait affronté qu’une fois auparavant et contre qui il avait perdu. Un judoka de haut calibre, mais Kyle a géré de manière exemplaire pour toute la durée du combat et en a profité quand l’Israélien s’est affaibli », a déclaré l’entraîneur de l’équipe nationale Antoine Valois-Fortier.
Après avoir profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour, Reyes a eu raison du Britannique Harry Lovell-Hewitt par ippon. L’Ontarien a ensuite subi la même médecine en quart de finale lorsque l’Italien Gennaro Pirelli l’a envoyé au repêchage. Il a toutefois su rebondir de belle façon à son premier combat de repêchage en disposant par ippon du Roumain Asley Gonzalez.
« Je trouve que j’ai bien fait en général ! Contre l’Italien, j’aurais peut-être dû attaquer davantage. J’espérais combattre pour l’or, mais je suis satisfait d’avoir atteint les rondes finales et de décrocher le bronze », a laissé savoir Reyes.
Dans ce même tableau, l’Ontarien Shady ElNahas a perdu son unique combat du jour contre Pirelli qui, visiblement, avait le numéro des Canadiens en cette dernière journée du tournoi. L’Italien a toutefois fini cinquième après avoir été défait par le Brésilien Leonardo Goncalves dans l’autre finale pour le bronze.
En grande finale, l’Azerbaïdjanais Zelym Kotsoiev a eu raison du Néerlandais Michael Korrel.
Chez les plus de 100 kg, le Québécois Marc Deschênes a été défait par le Français Emre Sanal qui s’est imposé par ippon.
Plus tôt dans le tournoi, Jessica Klimkait (-57 kg) et Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) avaient été médaillées d’or, Christa Deguchi (-57 kg) avait obtenu l‘argent et François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) le bronze.
Une récolte qui a de quoi rendre très fier leur entraîneur.
« On a eu droit à d’excellentes performances ! On voit que les Championnats du monde approchent et c’est de bon augure. Les troupes se sont entraînées en Europe au cours des dernières semaines, ç’a été payant et ç’a paru tout au long de la fin de semaine », a-t-il conclu.

Kyle Reyes Clinches Fifth Medal for Canada
Montréal, February 18, 2023 – Ontario’s Kyle Reyes capped off a superb showing by the Canadian team at the Tel Aviv Grand Slam in Israel, earning a fifth medal for the country on Saturday. The runner-up world champion in the under-100 kg weight division secured a bronze medal on the third and final day of competition.
In his final fight for bronze, Reyes, who had gone through the repechage, found himself facing not only his opponent Peter Paltchik of Israel, but also the large hometown crowd. The Canadian successfully deflected Paltchik’s attempted throws, and less than a minute remained in regulation time when he surprised his opponent with a counter-attack, knocking him to the ground and immobilizing him for an ippon.
“For most of the fight, I felt like I was in control of my opponent,” said Reyes, who was pleased to step onto the podium for the fifth time in his Grand Slam career.
“It was a great day for Kyle, especially his fight for bronze. He had only fought that opponent once before, and he had lost. (Paltchik is) a high-calibre judoka, but Kyle handled the entire bout beautifully, and took advantage of an opening when the Israeli began to falter,” explained national team coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.
After receiving a first-round bye, Reyes defeated Harry Lovell-Hewitt of Britain by ippon. In the quarter-final, he suffered the same fate when Gennaro Pirelli of Italy sent him to the repechage. However, he bounced back quickly in his first repechage bout, disposing of Romania’s Asley Gonzalez by ippon.
“I feel that overall, I did well. I should maybe have attempted more attacks against the Italian. I was hoping to fight in the gold medal final, but I’m glad to have made it to one of the final rounds and to have won bronze,” noted Reyes.
In the same weight division, Shady ElNahas of Ontario lost his only fight of the day to Pirelli, who clearly had the Canadians’ number today. Pirelli finished fifth after losing to Leonardo Goncalves of Brazil in the other bronze medal final.
In the big final for gold, Zelym Kotsoiev of Azerbaijan bested Michael Korrel of the Netherlands.
In over-100 kg action, Quebec’s Marc Deschênes lost to Emre Sanal of France, who won by ippon.
Earlier in the tournament, Jessica Klimkait (-57 kg) and Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) won gold medals, Christa Deguchi (-57 kg) won silver and François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) won bronze.
Needless to say, their coach is very proud!
“We saw some excellent performances! The World Championships are coming up, and things are looking good for us. Over the past few weeks, the team has been training in Europe, and it clearly paid off all weekend,” he concluded.
