La stratégie de Shady ElNahas lui rapporte le bronze en Géorgie

Montréal, 26 mars 2023 – À son dernier passage au Grand Chelem de Tbilissi, en 2021, Shady ElNahas avait décroché la première médaille d’or de sa carrière à ce niveau. Dimanche, il a renoué avec le podium en mettant la main sur une médaille de bronze chez les moins de 100 kg dans la capitale géorgienne.

Le Canadien connaissait bien son adversaire du dernier combat, le Kazakh Nurlykhan Sharkhan. Il s’était récemment entraîné avec lui et avait constaté son style défensif. ElNahas en a tenu compte dans sa stratégie et en a tiré avantage.

« Il a eu des pénalités parce qu’il ne voulait pas s’engager avec moi, ça faisait partie du plan de match », a reconnu ElNahas.

Après un peu plus de deux minutes, l’officiel a effectivement pénalisé Sharkhan pour une troisième fois et a mis fin au combat, menant l’Ontarien vers la troisième marche du podium.

« Si j’avais eu la chance de le projeter, je l’aurais fait, mais je me doutais que ça allait être difficile vu sa défensive », a ajouté celui qui cumule désormais neuf médailles en Grand Chelem.

Plus tôt dimanche, il est sorti victorieux de ses deux duels initiaux, lorsqu’il a vaincu par ippon le Croate Zlatko Kumric et le Français Alexandre Iddir afin de passer en demi-finale.

ElNahas avait alors rendez-vous avec Gonchigsuren Batkhuyag, de la Mongolie. Ce dernier a inscrit deux waza-ari tôt dans l’affrontement et est passé en finale.

« Mes deux premiers combats se sont déroulés parfaitement, mais en demi-finale, ç’a été très décevant. Le gars voulait juste attendre pour me contrer et il m’a eu. Je pense que c’est un combat que j’aurais pu gagner », a analysé ElNahas après coup.

S’il avait atteint la grande finale, le Canadien aurait affronté le Géorgien Illia Sulamanidze, le même adversaire qu’il avait battu à ce Grand Chelem en 2021.

« Ça aurait été cool de refaire ça. À Paris, j’avais aussi perdu en demi-finale, alors je vais devoir trouver une solution pour ne pas trop réfléchir, gagner et passer en finale. »

Sulamanidze a remporté l’or face à Batkhuyag en grande finale. L’autre médaille de bronze est allée au Brésilien Rafael Buzacarini.

Chez les moins de 90 kg, Louis Krieber Gagnon a terminé le tournoi avec une victoire et une défaite. Le Québécois a entrepris son parcours en l’emportant grâce à un waza-ari face à Anarbek Ishenbaev, du Kirghizistan, puis a perdu contre le champion olympique des Jeux de Tokyo, le Géorgien Lasha Bekauri.

Un peu plus tard, Bekauri a eu le dessus sur son compatriote Luka Maisuradze en grande finale. Le Cubain Ivan Felipe Silva Morales et la Japonais Goki Tajima ont tous les deux mérité une médaille de bronze.

De l’or et du bronze au tournoi international de Brême

Plusieurs judokas canadiens de moins de 21 ans étaient aussi en action dimanche, du côté de Brême, en Allemagne.

Jumber Meladze a volé la vedette à cette compétition. Il a signé six victoires en autant de combats pour rafler la médaille d’or des moins de 81 kg. Pour y arriver, Meladze a disposé du Néerlandais Joshua de Lange en grande finale.

Également des moins de 81 kg, Carter Althouse, Faniry Michael Andriamanana et Tigran Kryvytskyi n’ont pas réussi à trouver le chemin de la victoire.

L’autre médaille canadienne du jour a été remportée par John Jr Messe A Bessong chez les plus de 100 kg. Le Québécois et champion du monde en titre chez les cadets a cumulé une fiche de trois victoires et une défaite pour monter sur la troisième marche du podium.

Frederic De Cardaillac et Vincent Roberge-Poitras ont tous les deux signé deux victoires et une défaite chez les moins de 66 kg, alors que leurs compatriotes Fahd Fithane, Troy Gallant et Norbert Peter Andras ont été limités à un combat.

Dans le tableau des moins de 73 kg, Olivier Gagnon a cumulé une fiche de deux victoires et un revers. Munkhjin Batdorj a quant à lui conclu avec une victoire et une défaite. Dans la même division de poids, Artem Neyolov, Jeremie Ngombi et Lasha Tsatsalashvili ont tous été éliminés à leur premier duel dimanche.

Daniil Kremerman a été le seul Canadien à atteindre le repêchage des moins de 60 kg, concluant avec une fiche de trois victoires et deux défaites. Victor Dessureault a gagné deux duels et en a perdu un.

Vincent Nepton, Denis Neyolov, Luke Thomson et Raphael Gaanan ont tous perdu leur premier combat dans cette catégorie. Matys Rainville a connu un sort similaire du côté des moins de 100 kg.

Finalement, trois Canadiens étaient en action chez les moins de 90 kg. Alec Garand en est ressorti avec deux victoires et une défaite, Michael Akbashev a gagné son premier face-à-face avant de perdre le second, puis Oleksandr Kaplin a été vaincu à son premier combat.

Strategy a sure bet, as Shady ElNahas wins bronze in Georgia

Montréal, March 26, 2023 – When in 2021 he last participated in the Grand Slam in Tbilisi, Shady ElNahas won the first gold medal of his career at this level. This Sunday, he returned to the podium with a bronze medal in the Under 100kg category in the Georgian capital.

The Canadian was familiar with his last opponent, Kazakh Nurlykhan Sharkhan. The Canadian had recently trained with him and had taken note of his defensive style – something that ElNahas factored into his strategy so he could use it to his own advantage.

« He got penalties because he didn’t want to engage with me – that was part of the game plan, » ElNahas acknowledged.

Just as he was hoping, a little after two minutes had passed, the official penalized Sharkhan for a third time which ended the bout, good for earning the Ontario native the third step of the podium.

« If I had had the chance to throw him off, I would have, but I knew it was going to be tough because of his defense, » added EINahas, who now has nine Grand Slam medals to his credit.

Earlier Sunday, he won his first two bouts when he defeated Croatia’s Zlatko Kumric and France’s Alexandre Iddir by ippon to advance to the semi-finals. ElNahas then faced Gonchigsuren Batkhuyag of Mongolia – Batkhuyag scored two waza-aris early in the match and advanced to the final.

« My first two fights went perfectly, but the semi-final it was very disappointing. The guy just wanted to wait to counter me and he got to me. I think it was a fight I could have won, » ElNahas analyzed in hindsight.

If he had reached the grand final, the Canadian would have faced the Georgian Illia Sulamanidze, the same opponent he defeated at this very same Grand Slam in 2021.

« It would have been cool to do that again. In Paris, I also lost in the semifinals, so I’m going to have to figure out how to not overthink it, win, and get through to the final, » sagely noted the Canadian.

Sulamanidze won gold against Batkhuyag in the grand final, and the other bronze went to Brazilian judoka Buzacarini.

In the Under 90kg category, Louis Krieber Gagnon finished the tournament with one win and one loss. The Quebecer started his tournament with a waza-ari win over Anarbek Ishenbaev of (Kyrgyzstan), but then lost to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Champion Lasha Bekauri of Georgia.

Gold and bronze at Bremen International Tournament

Team Canada was very well represented by a whole host of judokas on the tatami at the Under 21 competition taking place this Sunday in Bremen, Germany.

Jumber Meladze stole the show, winning six bouts to claim the Under 81kg gold medal. In the grand finale, Meladze defeated Joshua de Lange of the Netherlands.

Also in the Under 81kg category, Carter Althouse, Faniry Michael Andriamanana, and Tigran Kryvytskyi were unable to find a way to win.

The other Canadian medal of the day was won by John Jr Messe A Bessong in the Over 100kg class. The Quebecer – and reigning World Cadet Champion – had a record of three wins and one loss, which got him to the third step of the podium.

Vincent Nepton, Denis Neyolov, Luke Thomson, and Raphael Gaanan all lost their first bouts in the latter category. Matys Rainville lived a similar fate in the Under 100kg category.

Finally, three Canadians were in action in the Under 90kg. Alec Garand finished the day with two wins and one loss, while Michael Akbashev won his first bout before losing his second, and Oleksandr Kaplin was defeated in his first bout. What a busy day for these hard-working judokas!
