Montréal, 6 octobre 2024 – Même s’il a avoué ne pas être au sommet de sa forme après une intoxication alimentaire plus tôt cette semaine, Mohab ElNahas a été en mesure de conclure sa journée de travail sur la deuxième marche du podium à la Coupe européenne de Portimao, au Portugal.

L’Ontarien a atteint la grande finale chez les moins de 90 kg où il a été opposé au Français Joris Guillot-Rosselot. En contrôle du combat alors que son adversaire avait déjà cumulé deux pénalités, ElNahas a commis une erreur tactique qui aura permis au Français de renverser la vapeur et remporter le duel.

« Il n’était pas le plus grand, mais il était vraiment costaud. J’ai encore un peu de difficulté contre les gars comme ça comme je suis un peu léger chez les 90 kg. Je pense que je menais dans le combat, mais j’ai fait une erreur qui a été couteuse. Je me suis approché et il s’est mis sous mes jambes pour me faire rouler », a expliqué ElNahas.

« Je suis tout de même très satisfait de ma médaille, ça fait du bien d’être sur le podium. J’aurais aimé avoir la médaille d’or évidemment, mais je suis content. Je voulais faire de mon mieux, je ne suis pas déçu du tout en ce moment », a-t-il ajouté.

Plus tôt dans la journée, le Canadien avait eu raison du Portugais Pedro Cavaco, puis du Britannique Samuel Petgrave. Deux victoires qui lui ont donné confiance pour la suite de la compétition.

« Ç’a été un bon début de journée, je me sentais très bien. Le Portugais était plus grand que moi et il semblait plus costaud alors que le Britannique était très physique. Ça m’a donné confiance pour la suite, je savais que j’avais ce qu’il fallait pour aller loin dans le tournoi », a remarqué ElNahas.

Afin d’obtenir son billet pour la finale, ElNahas a vaincu l’Argentin Mariano Coto Bersier en demi-finale, dans ce qu’il a décrit comme étant son « combat le plus difficile de la journée ».

« L’Argentin est très très fort, ç’a été vraiment dur. Je n’ai pas été capable de réaliser un ippon et j’ai gagné grâce à un waza-ari, en le contrant en fin de combat. Il a gagné des combats importants dans des Grands prix récemment, je suis content de l’avoir battu. »

Il s’agit du premier podium de Mohab ElNahas en Coupe européenne depuis sa victoire à Gaia, au Portugal, en août 2023. Il sera de retour en action dès la fin de semaine prochaine à l’occasion de la Coupe européenne de Malaga, en Espagne.

Également de la partie à Portimao, Daniel McCristall (-66 kg) a remis une fiche d’une victoire et deux défaites.

Fahd Fitane et Guillaume Gaulin sur la troisième marche du podium

Plusieurs judokas canadiens étaient également en action de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique où ils participaient à la Coupe panaméricaine de Saint-Domingue, en République dominicaine.

Du lot, Fahd Fitane (-73 kg) et Guillaume Gaulin (-90 kg) ont tous les deux réussi à se frayer un chemin jusqu’au podium.

Fitane a été le premier à réaliser l’exploit. Le Québécois a d’abord battu le Dominicain Moises Ozuna avant de faire le même coup au Panaméen Ronal Gonzalez pour obtenir son billet pour les demi-finales.

Anthony Matos, de la République dominicaine a toutefois mis fin aux espoirs de médaille d’or de Fitane. Le Canadien de 18 ans n’a pas baissé les bras et s’est repris de belle façon dans un duel pour la médaille de bronze où il l’a emporté contre l’Américain Romin Bakhtiyor.

De son côté, Guillaume Gaulin a été défait d’entrée de jeu par le Dominicain Medickson Del Orbe Cortorreal. Il a toutefois été en mesure de se reprendre de brillante façon au repêchage où il s’est d’abord imposé contre Jose De Los Santos, un autre favori de la foule.

Gaulin a terminé sa journée de travail en beauté en marquant deux waza-aris rapidement lors de son combat pour la médaille de bronze face au Portoricain Derik Rodriguez afin d’assurer sa place sur le podium.

Chez les moins de 60 kg, Tylor Collins a lui aussi atteint l’un des combats pour l’obtention d’une médaille de bronze où il s’est toutefois incliné face au Dominicain Dany Manuel Castro.

Collins avait auparavant vaincu Kendry Abad Mateo, de la République dominicaine, ainsi que l’Américain James Foster pour atteindre les demi-finales où il s’est ensuite incliné face au Colombien Johan Gomez, éventuel médaillé d’argent.

Puis, du côté des moins de 66 kg, Luke Thomson a pris le septième rang avec une fiche d’une victoire et deux défaites. Son compatriote Alexis Kearney a de son côté remporté son premier combat avant d’être éliminé après une défaite au tour suivant.

Adrian Shimabukuro n’a quant à lui pas été en mesure de trouver le chemin de la victoire à Saint-Domingue.

Mohab ElNahas Earns Silver in Portimão

Montréal, October 6, 2024 – Despite not feeling great after suffering a bout of food poisoning earlier in the week, Mohab ElNahas was able to finish off his day, Sunday, on the second step of the podium at the Senior European Cup in Portimão, Portugal.

The Ontarian reached the final in the Under-90kg category, where he was pitted against France’s Joris Guillot-Rosselot. After his opponent had already accumulated two penalties, EINahas had control of the bout, but made a tactical error that enabled the Frenchman to turn the tide in their favour, and win the match.

“He wasn’t the biggest, but he was really strong. I still have a bit of difficulty against guys like that, as I’m a bit light at 90kg. I think I was leading the match, but I made a mistake that cost me a lot. I got close, and he got under my legs and then rolled me over,” explained ElNahas.

“All the same, I’m very happy with my medal, and it feels good to be on the podium. I would have liked to have won the gold medal of course, but I’m happy overall. I wanted to do my best, so I’m not disappointed at all right now,” he added.

Earlier in the day, the Canadian had beaten Portugal’s Pedro Cavaco, then Great Britain’s Samuel Petgrave. Both victories fuelled his confidence for the rest of the competition.

“I had a good start to the day and I felt really good. The Portuguese judoka was taller than me and looked stronger, while the British athlete was quite physical. All the same, I knew I had what it takes to go far in the tournament,” remarked ElNahas.

To secure his ticket to the final, ElNahas defeated Argentina’s Mariano Coto Bersier in the semi-finals, in what he described as his “toughest bout of the day.”

“The Argentinian judoka was very, very strong, so it was really tough. I wasn’t able to get an ippon and I won with a waza-ari, countering him at the end of the fight. He’s won some important Grand Prix fights recently, so I’m happy to have beaten him this time today.”

Today marks Mohab ElNahas’ first European Cup podium since his victory in Gaia, Portugal, in August 2023. He’ll be back in action next weekend at the European Cup in Malaga, Spain.

Also stepping onto the tatami for Canada in Portimão was Daniel McCristall (-66 kg), who ended up with a record of one win and two losses.

Fahd Fitane and Guillaume Gaulin both take home bronze medals

Canadian judokas were in action on the other side of the Atlantic as well, taking part in the Panamerican Cadet Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Of Team Canada’s representatives, Fahd Fitane (-73 kg) and Guillaume Gaulin (-90 kg) both made their way to the podium.

Fitane was the first to earn his bronze medal. The Quebecer first defeated Dominican Moises Ozuna before moving on to defeating Panamanian Ronal Gonzalez. The two successes paved the way for Fitane’s place in the semi-finals.

However, Anthony Matos of the Dominican Republic put an end to Fitane’s gold medal hopes. Despite this, the 18-year-old Canadian didn’t give up and came back strong in a bronze-medal duel to beat American judoka Romin Bakhtiyor.

Guillaume Gaulin was defeated in his bout at the start, by Dominican Medickson Del Orbe Cortorreal. Yet, Gaulin bounced back in brilliant fashion in the repechage, where he first beat Jose De Los Santos, another of the crowd’s favourites.

The Canadian judoka finished off the day in style, scoring two quick waza-aris in his bronze medal bout against Puerto Rican Derik Rodriguez – enough to secure his place on the podium.

In the Under-60kg category, Tylor Collins also reached one of the bronze medal bouts, where he unfortunately lost to Dominican Dany Manuel Castro.

Earlier, Collins had defeated Kendry Abad Mateo of the Dominican Republic and American James Foster to reach the semi-finals, where he then lost to eventual silver medallist Johan Gomez of Colombia.

In the Under 66kg class, Luke Thomson took seventh place, with a record of one win and two losses. Teammate Alexis Kearney won his first bout, before being eliminated in the next round.

Adrian Shimabukuro gave it their all, but was unable to find a way to victory in Santo Domingo.
