Montréal, 26 juin 2026 – Médaillée d’or la semaine dernière à l’Open panaméricain de Buenos Aires, Laurence Biron a poursuivi sa lancée vendredi, montant une fois de plus sur la plus haute marche du podium des moins de 63 kg, cette fois à l’Open panaméricain de Santiago, au Chili.

Biron avait rendez-vous avec la Dominicaine Creymarlin Valdez en finale de la catégorie. Elle est passée rapidement à l’attaque en marquant un waza-ari dans les premiers instants du combat, avant de poursuivre l’offensive avec un yuko. L’athlète de 22 ans a terminé le travail avec un deuxième waza-ari pour s’assurer des grands honneurs.

« J’avais pris le temps d’analyser sa façon de se battre lors de ses combats précédents en début de journée. J’avais donc une bonne idée de mes attaques, mon plan de match était de m’imposer et de ne pas la laisser attaquer. J’avais un avantage à travailler au sol et j’en ai profité, ce qui m’a permis de gagner le combat », a raconté Laurence Biron.

La Québécoise n’avait jamais vraiment été inquiétée en début de journée, profitant d’un laissez-passer au premier tour avant de venir à bout de la Chilienne Allyson Quevedo par ippon, afin d’obtenir son billet pour la finale.

« Je ne connaissais pas du tout mon adversaire avant le combat, alors mon mot d’ordre était d’être patiente, d’y aller une séquence à la fois jusqu’à ce que j’aille l’opportunité d’attaquer. »

Il s’agit d’une quatrième médaille d’affilée pour Biron dans un open continental, une série qui remonte à sa médaille d’argent à Tunis, en février 2025.

« Je suis très heureuse de cette constance, particulièrement lors des deux dernières compétitions. La médaille d’or de la semaine dernière m’a donné beaucoup de confiance et je suis arrivée prête à reproduire la même chose aujourd’hui », a conclu Biron.

Dans la même catégorie, Catherine Toshkov a mis la main sur une médaille de bronze grâce à sa victoire face à l’Argentine Iara Figueroa. La Québécoise avait subi la défaite en demi-finale face à Creymarlin Valdez.

Chez les moins de 66 kg, Luke Thomson a d’abord vaincu le Chilien David Fica, puis s’est incliné face à l’Argentin Diego Calix au tour suivant. Une fois arrivé au repêchage, il a défait Michael Vargas, aussi du Chili, avant de conclure sa journée en beauté, défaisant l’Américain Jacob Yang afin de terminer sur la troisième marche du podium.

Dans cette même catégorie, Tyler Collin a été stoppé à son premier combat contre le Péruvien Mateo Condor.

Également en action à Santiago, Frédéric De Cardaillac a bataillé pour le bronze des moins de 73 kg. Il s’est toutefois avoué vaincu face au Chilien Tomas Hernandez et termine cinquième de la catégorie.

De Cardaillac avait battu l’Argentin Karim Adarvez et le Panaméen Ronal Gonzalez avant de baisser pavillon devant l’Équatorien Alfredo Valdivieso, en demi-finale.

Samedi, Keagan Young tentera de gagner une deuxième médaille de suite chez les moins de 90 kg après celle d’or qu’il a remportée à Buenos Aires, la semaine dernière. Guillaume Gaulin et Alec Garand combattront dans la même catégorie.

Médaillé de bronze en Argentine, Olivier Gagnon sera aussi en action dans le tableau des moins de 81 kg, tout comme Porter Guy.

Evelyn Beaton limitée à une seule sortie au Grand Prix de Qingdao

Evelyn Beaton était la seule Canadienne en action au premier jour du Grand Prix de Qingdao, en Chine. Évoluant chez les moins de 52 kg, Beaton a perdu son unique combat de la journée, où elle était opposée à la Russe Iuna Gerasimova. En avance au pointage, la Russe a réussi un ippon dans les dernières secondes du temps réglementaire pour se sauver avec la victoire.

Justin Lemire (-73 kg) et François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) seront tous les deux à surveiller samedi.

Streak Continues for Laurence Biron

Montréal, June 26, 2026 – Laurence Biron, who won gold last week at the Pan-American Open in Buenos Aires, continued her winning streak on Friday, once again claiming the top spot on the podium in the under-63 kg division, this time at the Pan-American Open in Santiago, Chile.

In the big final for her weight category, the Canadian found herself up against Creymarlin Valdez of the Dominican Republic. Biron quickly launched her attacks, scoring a waza-ari in the opening moments of the bout and following up with a yuko shortly thereafter. The 22-year-old judoka then sealed the deal with a second waza-ari.

“Earlier in the day, I took some time to analyze [Valdez’s] fighting style, so I had a pretty good idea of how I should attack. My game plan was to take control and not allow her to attack. I knew I was at an advantage on the ground, so I made the most of it, and that allowed me to win the bout,” explained Biron.

The Québécoise had not faced any major challenges earlier in the day, receiving a bye in the first round, then defeating Chile’s Allyson Quevedo by ippon to secure her spot in the finals.

“Before our fight, I knew nothing about my opponent, so my plan was to remain patient and take it one sequence at a time until there was an opportunity for me to attack.”

This marks Biron’s fourth consecutive medal at a continental open, a streak that began with a silver medal in Tunis in February 2025.

“I’m really happy with how consistent I’ve been, especially in my first two competitions. And last week’s gold medal really boosted my confidence, so I came here with the intention of repeating the feat,” she concluded.

In the same weight category, Catherine Toshkov captured a bronze medal after defeating Iara Figueroa of Argentina. Earlier, the Québécoise had lost her semi-final match to Creymarlin Valdez.

In the men’s under-66 kg division, Luke Thomson beat David Fica of Chile before bowing out to Diego Calix of Argentina. In the repechage, he bested Michael Vargas of Chile before wrapping up his day on a high note with a victory over Jacob Yang of the USA to claim the third spot on the podium.

In the same weight class, Tyler Collin was halted by Peru’s Mateo Condor in his first match of the day.

Also in Santiago, Frédéric De Cardaillac competed for bronze in the under-73 kg category. However, he lost to Tomas Hernandez of Chile and finished fifth.

Earlier, De Cardaillac had defeated Karim Adarvez of Argentina and Ronal Gonzalez of Panama, before being bested by Alfredo Valdivieso of Ecuador in the semi-finals.

On Saturday, Keagan Young will attempt to capture a second consecutive medal in the under-90 kg group, after winning gold in Buenos Aires last week. Guillaume Gaulin and Alec Garand will compete in the same weight division.

Olivier Gagnon, who clinched a bronze medal in Argentina, will join Porter Guy in the under-81 kg bracket.

Evelyn Beaton limited to one bout at the Qingdao Grand Prix

Evelyn Beaton was the only Canadian in action on day one of the Qingdao Grand Prix in China. In the under-52 kg weight category, Beaton lost her only match of the day to Russia’s Iuna Gerasimova. Gerasimova, who had taken an early lead in the scoring, secured her victory with an ippon in the final seconds of regulation time

Justin Lemire (-73 kg) and François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) will hit the tatamis in Qingdao on Saturday.
