Montréal, 8 juillet 2022 – Jessica Klimkait (Whitby, Ont.) est abonnée aux podiums lors des compétitions internationales depuis quelques années. Le Grand Chelem de Budapest, en Hongrie, n’a pas fait exception vendredi alors que la Canadienne a terminé sur la troisième marche du podium au terme d’une journée bien remplie.

Après avoir profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour chez les moins de 57 kg, Klimkait a commencé sa journée de belle façon en se défaisant de la Hongroise Kitti Kovacs. Elle s’est toutefois fait surprendre à son deuxième combat de la journée en s’inclinant contre la Japonaise Haruka Funakubo, éventuelle médaillée d’or.

« Jessica a connu une bonne journée. Elle est en préparation pour les Championnats du monde. La Japonaise est en forme en ce moment et c’était un bon défi pour elle. Elle a dominé le combat pratiquement du début à la fin, mais la Funakubo a profité d’une transition au sol pour prendre l’avantage et l’emporter », a commenté l’entraîneur Antoine Valois-Fortier.

C’est la tête haute que Klimkait est retournée sur les tatamis quelques instants plus tard pour le repêchage où elle a vaincu la Belge Mina Libeer afin d’obtenir son billet pour un combat pour la médaille de bronze.

Opposée à la Cubaine Arnaes Odelin Garcia, Klimkait a été expéditive pour s’imposer par ippon et ajouter une médaille de bronze à sa collection.

« Elle n’a pas commis d’autres erreurs au repêchage et en finale de bronze. C’était une fin de journée parfaite et on est contents de la voir monter sur le podium. Les projections étaient très bien exécutées et elle mérite sa médaille », a ajouté Valois-Fortier.

Seule autre Canadienne en action vendredi, Kelly Deguchi (Lethbridge, Alb.) a compilé une fiche d’une victoire et une défaite dans la catégorie des moins de 52 kg.

Deguchi a d’abord défait l’Italienne Giulia Pierucci au premier tour avant de s’incliner devant la Hongroise Reka Pupp au second tour. Pupp a poursuivi son chemin jusqu’au combat pour la médaille d’or où elle a vaincu l’Italienne Giulia Carna pour être couronnée championne.

« Kelly n’était pas l’une des têtes de séries et elle a dû affronter rapidement la favorite. Elle a bien bataillé par la Hongroise a été excellente. Elle s’améliore rapidement, il n’en manque pas beaucoup pour passer à l’étape suivante », a conclu l’entraîneur.

Trois Canadiens seront en action samedi à Budapest : Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) et Mohab ElNahas (-81 kg).

Bronze for Jessica Klimkait in Budapest

Montréal, July 8, 2022 – For the past few years, Jessica Klimkait (Whitby, ON) has regularly appeared on the podium at international competitions, and this weekend’s Budapest Grand Slam was no exception. At the end of a busy workday on Friday, the Canadian judoka clinched the bronze medal.

Following a first-round bye in the under-57 kg category, Klimkait began her day with a sweet victory over Kitti Kovacs of Hungary. However, in her second bout, she bowed out to Haruka Funakubo of Japan, who later won the gold medal.

“Jessica had a good day. She’s currently preparing for the World Championships. [Funakubo] is in terrific shape right now, so she was a good challenge for Jessica. Jessica dominated the bout almost from start to finish, but Funakubo took advantage of a ground transition to gain the upper hand and win,” commented coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

With her head held high, Klimkait returned to the tatamis a few moments later for the repechage, where she defeated Mina Libeer of Belgium to earn her ticket to one of the bronze medal finals.

In that round, she quickly disposed of Cuba’s Arnaes Odelin Garcia by ippon to add a bronze medal to her collection.

“In the repechage and the bronze medal final, she didn’t make any errors. It was a great way to end the day and we were happy to see her on the podium. Her throws were well-executed and her medal was well-deserved,” added Valois-Fortier.

The only other Canadian in action on Friday was Kelly Deguchi of Lethbridge, AB. She finished the day with one win and one loss in the under-52 kg weight division.

She defeated Italy’s Giulia Pierucci in the first round before losing to Hungary’s Reka Pupp in the second. Pupp later advanced all the way to the gold medal bout, where she defeated Italy’s Giulia Carna to be crowned champion.

“Kelly wasn’t one of the top seeds so she had to face the front runner early on. She fought well, but the Hungarian was excellent. She’s been improving quickly. It won’t take much for her to progress to the next level,” concluded the coach.

On Saturday, three Canadians will hit the tatamis in Budapest: Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) and Mohab El Nahas (-81 kg).
