Montréal, 28 août 2023 – Quatre athlètes canadiens étaient présents ce dimanche du côté de Lima, au Pérou, pour les épreuves de haut vol présentées pour une première fois aux Championnats panaméricains juniors de plongeon. Les représentants de l’unifolié n’ont pas fait qu’acte de présence dans la capitale péruvienne :  ils ont pris d’assaut les podiums des différentes catégories.

À la toute dernière finale de la fin de semaine, Alex Tiaglei s’est hissé au sommet du podium dans la catégorie A chez les garçons grâce à ses 294,93 points, mettant un point d’exclamation sur la fin de semaine des athlètes canadiens.

« Je me sens vraiment bien, j’étais un peu nerveux au début de la compétition, mais j’étais tout de même en confiance. Mon objectif était d’avoir du plaisir et ç’a clairement été mission accomplie, en plus de finir sur la plus haute marche du podium », a confié Tiaglei après la compétition.

Tiaglei n’a pas eu peur d’oser aux Championnats panaméricains juniors en tentant de nouveaux plongeons qu’il a commencé à pratiquer au cours de la dernière semaine. Une stratégie qui aura été très payante pour lui.

« J’ai réussi d’excellents plongeons ! Je suis particulièrement fier de mon saut renversé avec trois vrilles, surtout parce que j’ai seulement appris à le faire cette semaine, ici, à Lima. C’est stressant d’apprendre de nouveaux plongeons, mais c’est très excitant d’être capable de les réussir aussi rapidement », a-t-il ajouté.

Dans cette même catégorie, Carter Baker a pris le quatrième rang avec son pointage de 248,15. Il a seulement été devancé par son compatriote Tiaglei et les Brésiliens Lucca Silveira Souza (262,67 points) et Miguel Cardoso (259,00 points).

Un autre qui peut dire mission accomplie, c’est Charles-Antoine Labadie dans la catégorie B chez les garçons. Le Québécois ne visait rien de moins qu’une médaille d’or et il a réussi haut la main son objectif en réussissant quatre bons plongeons pour l’emporter.

« Je suis très content de ma performance. Mes plongeons se sont tous bien passés et j’ai été capable d’effectuer les petits correctifs que mes entraîneurs me demandaient. Ç’a été une très belle épreuve et c’est plaisant d’avoir de plus en plus de compétitions de haut vol dans les rendez-vous internationaux comme les Championnats panaméricains juniors. C’est une belle chance que nous avons », s’est réjoui Labadie.

Ses 300,60 points lui ont permis de devancer l’Américain James Boardman (292,65 points), qui a terminé deuxième, et le Brésilien Gabriel Perdigao (262,97 points), troisième du jour.

De son côté, Kelly-Ann Tessier était la seule et unique athlète inscrite dans la catégorie B chez les filles, mais il n’était pas question pour elle de ne pas donner son 110% pour cette raison. Tessier voulait prouver ce dont elle était capable et elle a réussi à le faire de belle façon.

« Mes entraîneurs m’ont donné toute la confiance dont j’avais besoin pour réaliser une belle performance. C’était une belle compétition, je suis contente d’y avoir participé. Je voulais être constante durant la journée et je suis fière d’avoir atteint cet objectif », a mentionné Tessier.

Également en action à Lima en fin de journée samedi, Mathilde Laberge et Lila Stewart ont remporté la médaille de bronze à l’épreuve synchro au tremplin de 3 m dans la catégorie ouverte. Il s’agissait de la troisième médaille du week-end pour Stewart qui avait mis la main sur l’argent à l’épreuve par équipe ainsi que sur le bronze au tremplin d’un mètre.

Canada storms High Diving Podium!

Montréal, August 28, 2023 – Four Canadian divers were in Lima, Peru, for the PanAm Junior High Diving Championships, a competition presented for the first time ever as part of this athletic event. Canucks didn’t just show up in the Peruvian capital – they downright stormed the podium in various categories.

In the very last final of the weekend, Alex Tiaglei topped the podium in the Young Men’s A category with 294.93 points, putting an exclamation point on the weekend’s activities.

« I felt really good! I was a little nervous at the start of the competition, but I was still confident. My goal was to have fun, and clearly that was mission accomplished, as well as being able to finish on the top step of the podium! » Tiaglei noted.

Tiaglei wasn’t afraid to try out some new things at the PanAm Junior High Diving Championships, as he tried out dives that he was practicing earlier in the week a shot. In the end, it was a strategy that paid off.

« I did some excellent dives! I’m particularly proud of my reverse jump with three twists, especially because I only learned how to do it this week here in Lima. It’s stressful to learn new dives, but it’s very exciting to be able to try them out so quickly, » he added.

In the same category, Carter Baker took fourth place with a score of 248.15. He was bettered only by aforementioned teammate Tiaglei, and Brazilians Lucca Silveira Souza (262.67 points) and Miguel Cardoso (259.00 points).

Another young athlete who can say confidently say it was mission accomplished is Charles-Antoine Labadie, diving in the Young Men’s B category. The Quebecer was aiming for nothing less than a gold medal, which he achieved with flying colors, landing four solid dives to win the top spot.

« I’m super happy with my performance. My dives all went well, and I was able to make the small corrections my coaches noted for me. It was a great event, and it’s nice to have more and more high-dive competitions in international events like the PanAm Junior Championships. It’s a great opportunity for us, » Labadie enthused.

Labadie’s 300.60 points put him ahead of American athlete James Boardman (292.65 points), who settled for second, and Brazilian Gabriel Perdigao (262.97 points), third on the podium.

In junior women’s high diving, Kelly-Ann Tessier may have been the only athlete in the Young Women’s B category, but she nonetheless gave it everything she had. Tessier wanted to demonstrate what she was capable of, and she succeeded in fine style.

« My coaches gave me a lot of confidence, so I was able to put in a good performance. It was a great competition and I’m glad I took part. I wanted to be consistent throughout the day, and I’m proud to have achieved that goal, » commented Tessier.

Also in action in Lima late on Saturday, were Mathilde Laberge and Lila Stewart, who won bronze in the synchro event on 3m springboard in the Open category. Notably, this was Stewart’s third medal of the weekend, as she had already won silver in the Team event and bronze in the 1-Metre event.
