Montréal, 27 avril 2024 – L’équipe canadienne de judo a conclu les compétitions seniors des Championnats panaméricains et de l’Océanie samedi avec cinq nouvelles médailles : une d’or, trois d’argent et une de bronze à Rio de Janeiro, au Brésil.

Chez les moins de 100 kg, la feuille d’érable est loin d’être passée inaperçue, alors que les deux Canadiens Shady El Nahas et Kyle Reyes se sont affrontés en grande finale. Dès le début du combat, Reyes y est allé de quelques attaques, mais ElNahas n’a pas tardé avant de répliquer pour marquer un waza-ari.

Les deux coéquipiers ont ensuite poursuivi les hostilités jusqu’au terme des quatre minutes de temps réglementaire, où El Nahas a été sacré champion.

« Ça fait déjà plusieurs fois qu’ils se rencontrent en compétition, donc ils se connaissent beaucoup. Ça a été un combat fermé et très tactique. Shady a été en mesure de marquer un point à la mi-chemin, ce qui a surpris Kyle et ensuite, il a maintenu son avance », a expliqué l’entraîneur Antoine Valois-Fortier à propos de la performance de l’athlète de 26 ans.

Les deux médailles de bronze ont été remportées par les Brésiliens Rafael Buzacarini et Leonardo Goncalves.

Un tour du chapeau argenté

Kyle Reyes n’est pas le seul canadien à avoir été décoré d’argent, ce samedi. François Gauthier-Drapeau est lui aussi monté sur la deuxième marche du podium, mais cette fois, chez les moins de 81 kg.

En grande finale, le Québécois a perdu par ippon contre le médaillé d’or des Jeux panaméricains de Santiago, le Brésilien Guilherme Schimidt.

« François menait largement le combat. Il faisait son meilleur combat contre cet adversaire, mais malheureusement il a fait une erreur à la fin et ça lui a coûté le combat », a indiqué l’entraîneur Valois-Fortier.

Avant son dernier combat, Gauthier-Drapeau l’avait emporté contre le Néo-Zélandais Maarten De Ridder. Il a ensuite eu raison d’Alain Aprahamian de l’Uruguay en quart de finale et du Brésilien Gabriel Falcao en demi-finale.

Chez les femmes de plus de 78 kg, Ana Laura Portuondo Isasi s’est elle aussi démarquée en remportant une médaille d’argent. Elle a réussi à se tailler une place jusqu’en finale où elle a eu rendez-vous contre la Brésilienne Beatriz Souza, qui l’a vaincue par ippon tôt dans le combat.

« Ana a battu la cubaine de manière très rapide et expéditive. En finale, malheureusement, ça a été un combat assez court, a dit Valois-Fortier. Par contre, je suis convaincu qu’elle aura beaucoup appris de cette défaite-là, mais somme toute, elle a eu une très belle journée avec trois victoires. »

Couronné champion junior plus tôt cette semaine, John Jr. Messé A Bessong est cette fois monté sur la troisième marche du podium. Il a réussi à atteindre un duel pour la médaille de bronze où il a vaincu le Cubain Jonathan Loynaz.

Son coéquipier, Marc Deschênes, s’est incliné dans l’autre duel de bronze contre l’Équatorien Freddy Figueroa et il termine cinquième au classement général de la catégorie.

Notons que Deschênes avait eu raison de John Jr. Messé A Bessong un peu plus tôt dans la journée, mais une défaite contre le Cubain Andy Granda en demi-finale l’a relégué en finale de bronze.

Dans les autres résultats canadiens du jour, Louis Krieber Gagnon s’est incliné en finale de bronze des moins de 90 kg. Du côté des femmes, Laurence Biron (-70 kg) a été limité à un seul combat samedi, s’inclinant face à la Jamaïquaine Ebony Drysdale Daley.

Malgré sa défaite contre la Colombienne Brenda Olaya, Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) a de son côté pris part au repêchage. Elle s’est toutefois avouée vaincu par waza-ari contre Vanessa Chala, de l’Équateur, qui a été médaillée de bronze en fin de journée.

Five More Medals for Canada in Brazil

Montréal, April 27, 2024 – The Canadian judo team wrapped up the senior competitions at the Pan-American–Oceania Championships with five new medals on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: one gold, three silver, and one bronze.

The maple leaf was on full display in the under-100 kg weight division, where Shady El Nahas and Kyle Reyes took each other on in the big final. Right from the start of the bout, Reyes launched several attacks, but ElNahas was quick to respond, scoring a waza-ari.

The two teammates then continued to battle it out for the entire four minutes of regulation time, at the end of which El Nahas was declared champion.

“They’ve fought each other several times now in competition, so they know each other well. It was a very tight, very tactical fight. Shady managed to score a point about halfway through, which surprised Kyle, and he held on to his lead until the end,” said coach Antoine Valois-Fortier of the 26-year-old’s performance.

The two bronze medals went to Brazilians Rafael Buzacarini and Leonardo Goncalves.

Silver hat trick

Kyle Reyes was not the only Canadian to snag a silver medal on Saturday. François Gauthier-Drapeau also climbed onto the second step of the podium, in the under-81 kg weight category.

In the big final, the Québécois lost by ippon to Brazil’s Guilherme Schimidt, who had also won gold at the Pan-American Games in Santiago.

“François was clearly leading the fight. It was his best performance so far against this opponent, but he made a mistake at the end which cost him the match,” said Valois-Fortier.

Before reaching the final, Gauthier-Drapeau began by defeating Maarten De Ridder of New Zealand. He then ousted Alain Aprahamian of Uruguay in the quarter-final and Gabriel Falcão of Brazil in the semi-final.

In the women’s over-78 kg category, Ana Laura Portuondo Isasi also won a silver medal. She advanced all the way to the big final, where she was pitted against Beatriz Souza of Brazil, who quickly defeated her by ippon.

“Ana beat her Cuban opponent quickly and decisively. Unfortunately, in the final, it was over pretty fast,” said Valois-Fortier. “However, I’m convinced that she learned a lot from this loss, and all in all, she had a great day, with three wins.”

In the over-100 kg group, John Jr. Messé A Bessong, who was crowned junior champion earlier this week, finished on the third step of the podium today. He advanced to one of the bronze medal finals, where he bested Jonathan Loynaz of Cuba.

In the same weight class, his teammate Marc Deschênes bowed out to Ecuador’s Freddy Figueroa in the other bronze medal final and finished fifth in the standings.

Earlier in the day, Deschênes had defeated Messé A Bessong in a previous bout, but his semi-final loss to Cuba’s Andy Granda relegated him to the bronze medal final.

In other Canadian results of the day, Louis Krieber-Gagnon lost the under-90 kg bronze medal final.

On the women’s side, Laurence Biron (-70 kg) was limited to one bout on Saturday, where she bowed out to Jamaica’s Ebony Drysdale Daley.

Despite losing to Colombia’s Brenda Olaya, Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) advanced to the repechage. However, she was beaten by waza-ari by Vanessa Chala of Ecuador, who took bronze at the end of the day.
