Montréal, 10 mars 2024 – Après la médaille d’or de Lasha Tsatsalashvili chez les moins de 73 kg la veille, les athlètes canadiens ont pris d’assaut le podium lors de la dernière journée d’activité à la Coupe européenne junior de Podgorica, au Monténégro. Avec une récolte de quatre médailles dimanche, dont deux d’or, le Canada s’est hissé au sommet du classement des médailles, en plus de totaliser trois cinquièmes places durant le week-end.

C’est Marie-Lune Turmel (-48 kg) qui a été la première à monter au sommet du podium dimanche. La Québécoise a remporté son duel de premier tour face à Marija Simic, du Monténégro avant de défaire la Britannique Summer Shaw en demi-finale.

Turmel a par la suite été expéditive en grande finale, réussissant un ippon sur la Grecque Maria Eleni Gogua après seulement 30 secondes de combat pour mériter la médaille d’or.

« Marie-Lune a connu une excellente journée, je suis très fier d’elle. Elle a été très attentive à mes consignes durant les combats. Elle a bien suivi les plans de match et c’est vraiment ce qui a fait la différence. La Grecque posait des problèmes à Marie-Lune dans les camps d’entraînements avant la compétition, mais elle a été capable de la battre au bon moment ! » a mentionné l’entraîneur canadien Sasha Mehmedovic.

Dans la même catégorie, Heidi Quach a été battue dès son premier duel face à Gogua, avant de se reprendre de belle façon en finale pour la médaille de bronze, en ayant raison de Marija Simic.

Evelyn Beaton était l’autre Canadienne en action dimanche à Podgorica. Chez les moins de 52 kg, Beaton a atteint la finale après avoir battu coup sur coup la Kosovare Laurine Gashi et la Serbe Mina Gacic. L’Albertaine a tout donné face à la Polonaise Kinga Klimczak en finale, mais c’est toutefois cette dernière qui l’a emporté en temps supplémentaire.

« Evelyn est passée tellement proche ! Elle aurait clairement pu marquer un ippon durant la finale, mais les arbitres ont plutôt décidé qu’il s’agissait d’un waza-ari. Elle a commis une petite erreur en prolongation et c’est ce qui a permis à la Polonaise de marquer le point de la victoire. La suite sera très intéressante pour Evelyn », a indiqué Mehmedovic.

Du côté masculin, John Jr Messé A Bessong (+100 kg) a lui aussi été en mesure de se hisser sur la plus haute marche du podium. Profitant d’un laissez-passer au premier tour, le Lavallois a battu le Serbe Mateja Borojevic en demi-finale avant de vaincre le Monténégrin Stefan Kovinic pour conclure sa journée de travail.

« La semaine dernière, John avait terminé avec le bronze et cette semaine, il voulait absolument la médaille d’or. La foule était très bruyante lors de la finale, mais John a été capable de demeurer concentré et c’est tout à son avantage. C’est une excellente préparation pour les Championnats du monde junior auxquels il va participer », a conclu l’entraîneur.

En action dans la catégorie des moins de 81 kg, Tigran Kryvytskyi a pris la cinquième place avec une fiche de trois victoires et deux défaites. De son côté, Faniry Michael Andriamanana a terminé la compétition avec une victoire et deux revers.

Canada Closes Weekend at Top of Medal Standings

Montréal, March 10, 2024 – On the heels of Lasha Tsatsalashvili’s gold medal performance in the under-73 kg category yesterday, Canada’s athletes stormed the podium on the final day of the Junior European Cup in Podgorica, Montenegro. With a haul of four medals on Sunday, including two gold, Canada climbed to the top of the medal standings. In addition, three other Canadians finished in fifth place this weekend.

Marie-Lune Turmel (-48 kg) was the first to climb to the top of the podium on Sunday. The Québécoise defeated Marija Simic of Montenegro in the first round, before ousting Summer Shaw of Great Britain in the semi-final.

In the big final, Turmel quickly dispatched of Greece’s Maria Eleni Gogua by ippon after only 30 seconds of combat, to clinch the gold medal.

“Marie-Lune had a great day. I’m very proud of her. She paid close attention to my instructions during her fights. She really stuck to her game plans, and that’s what made the difference. Marie-Lune had a lot of difficulty with the Greek girl in the pre-competition training camps, but she was able to beat her when it counted!” said Canadian coach Sasha Mehmedovic.

In the same weight category, Heidi Quach lost her first match to Gogua, but bounced back in the bronze medal final to defeat Simic.

Evelyn Beaton was the third Canadian female in action in Podgorica on Sunday. In the under-52 kg division, she advanced to the big final after beating Laurine Gashi of Kosovo and Mina Gacic of Serbia in back-to-back bouts. In the final, the Albertan gave her all against Poland’s Kinga Klimczak, but it was the latter who prevailed in overtime.

“Evelyn came so close! She clearly could have scored an ippon in the final, but the referee counted it as a waza-ari. She made a slight error in overtime, which allowed the Polish girl to score the winning point. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Evelyn,” said Mehmedovic.

On the men’s side, John Jr Messé A Bessong (+100 kg) also landed at the top of the podium today. After receiving a first-round bye, the judoka from Laval bested Mateja Borojevic of Serbia in the semi-final before defeating Stefan Kovinic of Montenegro to conclude his day’s work.

“Last week, John won bronze. This week, he was absolutely determined to win gold. The crowd was very noisy during the final, but John stayed focused, and that worked to his advantage. It was excellent preparation for the Junior World Championships, which he’ll be competing in,” concluded the coach.

In the under-81 kg category, Tigran Kryvytskyi finished fifth with a record of three wins and two losses. Faniry Michael Andriamanana ended the day with one win and two losses.
