L’équipe canadienne junior termine deuxième à Rio de Janeiro

Montréal, 24 avril 2024 – Les judokas canadiens juniors ont uni leurs forces mercredi à l’occasion de la compétition mixte par équipe des Championnats panaméricains cadets et juniors disputés à Rio de Janeiro, au Brésil. Portés par cet effort collectif, les représentants de l’unifolié ont atteint la finale, où ils se sont toutefois butés aux athlètes locaux, champions en titre de l’événement.

L’équipe canadienne a d’abord perdu un premier affrontement avec la formation brésilienne au compte de 4-0, lors de la phase de groupe.

Yehor Paladii (-90 kg) a été le premier à fouler les tatamis. Dans un duel serré, celui qui avait décroché une médaille d’argent à l’individuel s’est mesuré à Jesse Barbosa, qui a eu le dessus grâce à un waza-ari.

Alisa Kofman, médaillée d’argent des plus de 78 kg mardi, a été défaite à son unique combat de la journée aux mains d’Evellyn Vitoria Das Chagas Pereira. La même adversaire qui l’a battue en finale du tournoi individuel.

Couronné champion panaméricain junior des plus de 100 kg la veille, John Jr. Messe A Bessong a affronté le Brésilien Andreu Coelho par la suite. Le Québécois a reçu trois pénalités, ce qui a mené à sa défaite et a donné une avance de 3-0 au Brésil. Bianca Reis a fermé les livres pour les hôtes en ayant le dernier mot sur Catherine Toshkov dans un duel des moins de 57 kg.

Les judokas canadiens ont été en mesure de se reprendre contre le Chili.

John Jr. Messe A Bessong a vite donné le ton en marquant deux waza-ari contre Patricio Urra, qu’il avait d’ailleurs vaincu en 49 secondes mardi. Puis, Catherine Toshkov a disposé d’Ayinko Toloza par ippon afin de doubler l’avance canadienne.

Une victoire de Lasha Tsatsalashvili face à Tomas Hernandez chez les moins de 73 kg a été suivie du succès de Charline Bourque contre Valentina Jimenez. Deux brillantes performances qui ont confirmé la victoire du Canada et qui l’a envoyé en grande finale.

Une fois de plus, ce sont les Brésiliens qui sont ressortis vainqueurs.

Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg) a perdu contre Bianca Reis, tout comme Lasha Tsatsalashvili devant Guilherme De Oliveira. Charline Bourque et Tigran Kryvytskyi (-90 kg) ont pris part aux combats suivants. Ils ont tous les deux subi une défaite après avoir reçu trois pénalités.

« On a fait preuve d’un bel effort aujourd’hui (mercredi) en terminant deuxièmes. Ç’a été une finale difficile, comme ce l’est toujours contre les Brésiliens. Ils forment une équipe coriace et on savait que c’était l’équipe à battre », a déclaré l’entraîneur national Sasha Mehmedovic.

« Je suis content du travail accompli par notre équipe. Ils ont tout donné et ont combattu très fort. En espérant que l’an prochain, on pourra terminer au sommet du podium ! »

La délégation canadienne n’a pas participé au tournoi par équipe chez les cadets.

Canada’s Junior Team Takes Second Place

Montréal, April 24, 2024 – Canadian junior judokas united forces on Wednesday in the Mixed Team event of the Panamerican Cadet and Junior Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Driven by collective efforts, the Canadians reached the final, where they came up against local athletes – and the defending champions of the competition.

Today’s story began when the Canadian team lost its first match against the Brazilian team, 4-0, in the group phase.

Yehor Paladii (-90kg) was the first to take to the tatami. In a tight bout, the individual silver medallist came up against Jesse Barbosa (Brazil), who won by waza-ari.

Silver medallist in the over 78kg category on Tuesday, Alisa Kofman lost her only bout of the day to Evellyn Vitoria Das Chagas Pereira – the same opponent who beat her in the final of the individual tournament.

Crowned Pan-American Junior 100kg Champion the day before, John Jr. Messe A Bessong faced Brazil’s Andreu Coelho after Kofman’s turn was over. The Quebecer received three penalties, which led to his defeat and gave Brazil a 3-0 lead. Bianca Reis took over for the host country, and had the final word over Catherine Toshkov in an Under 57kg duel.

Yet, the Canadian judokas were able to bounce back against Chile.

John Jr. Messe A Bessong quickly set the pace by scoring two waza-ari against Patricio Urra, whom he had defeated in 49 seconds on Tuesday. Catherine Toshkov then defeated Ayinko Toloza by ippon to double the Canadian Team’s lead.

Lasha Tsatsalashvili’s victory over Tomas Hernandez in the Under 73kg category was followed by Charline Bourque’s win over Valentina Jimenez. These two brilliant performances confirmed Team Canada’s victory and sent it through to an exciting grand final.

However, the highest step on the podium wasn’t in the cards for the Canuck judokas, and in the end, it was the Brazilians who emerged to grab gold yet again.

Carla Van Zyl (-57kg) lost to Bianca Reis, as did Lasha Tsatsalashvili to Guilherme De Oliveira. Charline Bourque and Tigran Kryvytskyi (-90kg) took part in the next bouts. However sadly, both were defeated after receiving three penalties.

« We put in a good effort today (Wednesday) and we came in second. It was a tough final, it always is against the Brazilians. They’re a tough team and we knew they were the team to beat, » noted National Team Coach Sasha Mehmedovic.

« I’m pleased with the work our team put in. They gave it their all and fought very hard. Here’s hoping that next year we can finish on top of the podium! »

The Canadian delegation did not take part in the cadet team tournament.
