Championnats du monde junior de plongeon de la FINA
Montréal, 29 novembre 2022 – Sonya Palkhivala (PCDC) et Katelyn Fung (Forest City) ont été les grandes vedettes de la finale au tremplin de 3 m chez les filles dans la catégorie A, mardi, aux Championnats du monde junior de plongeon de la FINA au Centre sportif du Parc olympique de Montréal.
Palkhivala avait été irréprochable en qualification en début de journée où elle avait terminé au premier rang. La Québécoise a poursuivi sa lancée en après-midi en conservant ce premier rang tout au long de la finale. Elle a terminé la journée avec une note totale de 427,10, en route vers le titre de championne du monde junior.
« Je rêve depuis longtemps d’être championne du monde junior ! Je ne savais pas si c’était vraiment quelque chose de possible. Après les préliminaires où je me suis classé au premier rang, je commençais à y croire de plus en plus, mais je savais qu’il y avait encore énormément de travail à faire », s’est réjouie Palkhivala.
« Je n’étais pas trop nerveuse avant la finale, j’étais vraiment dans ma zone de confort. Ça me donne beaucoup de confiance pour la suite. Je viens de gagner l’or aux Championnats du monde junior, je sais que je peux me rendre encore plus loin par la suite. »
Il s’agit de la première médaille d’or individuelle remportée par un athlète du Canada aux Championnats du monde junior depuis 2002. Un certain Alexandre Despatie avait été le dernier à réaliser l’exploit avant Palkhivala.
Sa coéquipière Katelyn Fung avait pris le huitième rang en matinée lors des qualifications et elle savait qu’elle avait ce qu’il faut pour améliorer ce rang lors de la finale. Démontrant une constance exemplaire qui lui a permis d’obtenir trois notes identiques de 54,00 à ses trois premiers sauts en finale, Fung a démontré l’étendue de son talent lors de son ultime plongeon en marquant 64,50 points.
Son total de 420,35 lui a permis de monter sur la deuxième marche du podium, tout juste derrière sa compatriote.
« Je suis vraiment contente de ma médaille. Ç’a été une expérience incroyable et c’est une chance unique de participer aux Championnats du monde à la maison. Je voulais faire preuve de constance et avec ma liste de sauts, je savais que ça pourrait me permettre de monter sur le podium aujourd’hui », a mentionné Fung, en ajoutant qu’elle se sent inspirée par les performances de sa coéquipière Sonya Palkhivala.
« C’est incroyable de pouvoir partager ce moment-là avec Katelyn. On s’entraîne ensemble depuis le début de l’année et c’était la meilleure manière de conclure la saison », a ajouté Palkhivala.
L’Américaine Lily Witte a mis la main sur la médaille de bronze avec sa note de 414,00.
Chez les garçons au tremplin d’un mètre dans la catégorie A, un Canadien a réussi à se frayer un chemin jusqu’à la grande finale. Noah Bernard (TDA) a terminé au huitième rang en vertu de ses 418,90 points.
« C’était tellement stressant ! Il y avait énormément de bons plongeurs ici aujourd’hui, et pour une première compétition internationale, je suis vraiment fier de mon résultat », a-t-il indiqué.
« C’est certain que je veux toujours terminer premier. C’était une grosse compétition alors je voulais donner tout ce que j’avais. Je me suis concentré sur ce que je contrôlais et je pense que ça m’a été utile aujourd’hui. J’ai beaucoup appris et je tire du positif de cette journée. »
La finale a été remportée par l’Italien Matteo Santoro (469,70) qui a été accompagné sur le podium par l’Irlandais Jake Passmore (453,60) et par l’Américain Max Fowler (451,15).
Emmitt Reesor, lui aussi de Toronto, a de son côté pris le 15e rang en qualification en début de journée.
Les Championnats du monde junior de plongeon de la FINA se poursuivent jusqu’à dimanche. Quatre finales sont au programme mercredi : le synchro à la plateforme chez les garçons, le 3 m chez les filles B, le 1 m chez les garçons B et le 3 m synchro chez les filles.

Montréal, November 29, 2022 – Sonya Palkhivala (PCDC) and Katelyn Fung (Forest City) were the stars of the Group A girls’ 3-metre springboard final on Tuesday at the FINA World Junior Diving Championships, being held at the Montréal Olympic Park Sports Centre.
Palkhivala performed flawlessly in this morning’s qualification rounds, where she came out in first place. In the afternoon, the Québécoise maintained her lead throughout the finals, finishing the day with a score of 427.10 points and the title of Junior World Champion.
“I’ve dreamed of being junior world champion for a long time, but I didn’t know if it was really possible. After finishing first in the qualifiers, I started to believe there was a good chance, but I knew I still had a lot of work to do,” explained Palkhivala. “I wasn’t too nervous before the final. I was in my comfort zone. This win gives me a lot of confidence for the future. I just won gold at the Junior World Championships! Now I know I can take it even further.”
Palkhivala is the first Canadian to win a gold medal at the Junior World Championships since 2002, when a certain Alexandre Despatie accomplished the feat.
In this morning’s qualifications, Palkhivala’s teammate Katelyn Fung finished eighth, but she knew she had what it took to move up in the finals. Demonstrating incredible consistency, Fung earned three identical scores of 54.00 on her first three dives in the finals, before displaying the depth of her talent on her final jump by scoring 64.50.
Her total of 420.35 points earned her the second spot on the podium, right behind her countrymate.
“I’m really happy with my medal. It was an incredible experience, and it allowed me to participate in the World Championships right here at home. I wanted to be consistent, and with the dives I had planned, I knew I could get onto the podium today,” said Fung, adding that she was inspired by Palkhivala’s performance.
“It’s amazing to be able to share this with Katelyn. We’ve been training together since the beginning of the year, and this was the best possible way to end the season,” added Palkhivala.
Lily Witte of the USA won bronze with 414.00 points.
In the Group A boys’ one-metre event, one Canadian made it to the big final. Noah Bernard (TDA) finished eighth, with 418.90 points.
“It was so stressful! There were a lot of great divers here today, and I’m really proud of my result at my first international competition,” he stated. “I always want to finish first, of course. The competition was heavy, so I wanted to give it my all. I focused on what I could control, and I think that served me well today. I learned a lot. It was a positive day.”
Matteo Santoro of Italy won gold with a score of 469.70 points, followed by Jake Passmore of Ireland with 453.60 and Max Fowler of the USA with 451.15.
Emmitt Reesor, also of Toronto, finished 15th in this morning’s qualifying rounds.
The FINA World Junior Diving Championships will continue until Sunday. Four finals are scheduled for Wednesday: the boy’s synchronized platform, the Group B girls’ 3-metre springboard, the Group B boys’ 1-metre springboard and the girls’ synchronized 3-metre.
