Montréal, 8 octobre 2025 – Le défi était imposant pour les Canadiens dès le premier tour du concours par équipe des Championnats du monde juniors de judo, mercredi, à Lima, au Pérou. La troupe de l’entraîneur Antoine Bouchard s’est inclinée d’entrée de jeu face aux athlètes neutres, qui combattaient sous la bannière de la Fédération internationale de judo.

Du côté masculin, Fahd Fitane (-73 kg) et John Jr Messé A Bessong (+90 kg) ont donné du fil à retordre à leurs adversaires. Fitane a d’ailleurs été le premier à marquer dans son duel face à Iaroslav Bunakov, mais été surpris deux fois, plus tard dans le combat, et a subi la défaite.

Quant à Messé A Bessong, il avait rendez-vous avec Bislan Katamardov, vainqueur chez les plus de 100 kg la veille. Le combat a été âprement disputé et le champion du monde junior a été en mesure de réussir un deuxième waza-ari dans les dernières secondes du temps règlementaire pour l’emporter.

« Malheureusement, ce n’était pas une journée qui a été de notre côté. Fahd a été très bon en réussissant à marquer assez tôt. Il a été capable de contrôler son adversaire pendant une bonne partie du combat, mais à force de mettre de la pression, Bunakov a pu revenir de l’arrière et Fahd n’a pas pu résister jusqu’à la fin.

« John a livré un combat très honnête contre le nouveau champion du monde junior. Il a réussi de bonnes séquences, mais ça n’a pas été assez pour aller chercher la victoire. Il s’est fait marquer pendant le combat et a essayé de revenir par la suite, mais c’est finalement son adversaire qui a pu en profiter », a-t-il ajouté.

Du côté féminin, Laurence Gagnon (-57 kg) a subi la défaite face à Elvida Gureva, alors qu’Alisa Kofman a subi un sort similaire à son affrontement contre Anna Petrunina, chez les plus de 70 kg.

« Même s’ils n’ont pas été chercher de victoires cette semaine, certains athlètes qui seront encore dans la catégorie junior l’an prochain ont pu acquérir de la belle expérience ici, à Lima. Je pense à Fahd Fitane et Laurence Gagnon par exemple. Ils ont fait de très bons combats, malgré la défaite et c’est encourageant pour la suite », a conclu l’entraîneur.

Antoine Bouchard demeurera au Pérou dans les prochains jours afin de préparer les athlètes canadiens seniors qui seront de passage dans la capitale péruvienne ce week-end pour un tournoi Grand Prix. Il reviendra ensuite au pays pour préparer la nouvelle saison des athlètes juniors qui débutera dès les prochaines semaines.

Canadians Stymied by Formidable Opponents in Team Event

Montréal, October 8, 2025 – The Canadians faced a daunting challenge in round one of the team event at the Junior World Judo Championships in Lima, Peru, on Wednesday. The members of coach Antoine Bouchard’s team were eliminated early in the competition by Neutral Athletes competing under the banner of the International Judo Federation.

On the men’s side, Fahd Fitane (-73 kg) and John Jr Messé A Bessong (+90 kg) put up solid fights against their opponents. Fitane was the first to score in his match against Iaroslav Bunakov, but was caught off guard twice later in the bout and ultimately defeated.

Messé A Bessong was up against Bislan Katamardov, who won the over-100 kg tournament yesterday. Their match was a tight one, but the new junior world champion managed to score a second waza-ari with just seconds to go in regulation time, thus clinching the win.

“Unfortunately, today just wasn’t our day. Fahd did well, scoring early in the bout. He was able to control his opponent for a good part of the match, but Bunakov kept the pressure on and was able to come back from behind, and Fahd couldn’t hold on until the end.”

“John put up a very respectable fight against the new junior world champion. He had some good sequences, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win. After his opponent scored the first time, John tried to come back from behind, but his opponent took advantage of that to score again,” he added.

On the women’s side, Laurence Gagnon lost to Elvida Gureva in the under-57 kg category. Alisa Kofman met a similar fate in her over-70 kg match against Anna Petrunina.

“Even though they didn’t win this week, some of the athletes who will still be in the junior age group next year gained some valuable experience here in Lima. Like Fahd Fitane and Laurence Gagnon, for example. Despite their losses, they fought very well, and that bodes well for the future,” concluded the coach.

Antoine Bouchard will remain in Peru for the next few days to prepare several senior Canadian judokas for a Grand Prix tournament in Lima this weekend. He will then return to Canada to get the junior athletes ready for the new season, which gets underway in the next few weeks.
