Montréal, 22 octobre 2023 – Les plongeurs canadiens ont tout donner dimanche aux Jeux panaméricains de Santiago, au Chili, afin de prendre s’assaut les podiums. Pamela Ware et Mia Vallée ont terminé première et deuxième au tremplin d’un mètre alors que Nathan Zsombor-Murray et Rylan Wiens ont été médaillés d’argent au 10 m synchro.

Ware a repris là où elle avait laissé au cours de l’été en faisant preuve d’une constance remarquable au tremplin d’un mètre dimanche pour monter sur la plus haute marche du podium (280,25 points).

Elle a terminé la compétition en beauté, obtenant une note de 58,50 points, une note identique à celle obtenu à son plongeon précédant.

« Je me sens tellement heureuse et je suis fière de moi, et de Mia. Ce matin, je ne me sentais pas vraiment bien après les préliminaires. J’ai été capable de repartir à zéro. Je suis un peu surprise, mais très fière » a commenté Ware.

« Je voulais bien faire mes plongeons et je me suis concentrée sur les corrections apportées par mon entraîneur. Ça me donne un boost de confiance et je me sens vraiment confiante pour les prochaines épreuves », a-t-elle ajouté.

Il s’agit de la première médaille individuelle de Ware aux Jeux panaméricains, elle qui faisait partie de l’équipe canadienne à Toronto en 2015 et à Lima, au Pérou, en 2019.

De son côté, Mia Vallée avait été flamboyante en début de journée, recevant des notes de 57,20, 63,55 et 60,00 à ses trois premiers plongeons de la finale. L’athlète de Beaconsfield a toutefois connu quelques difficultés à son quatrième saut, ce qui lui a fait perdre de précieux points.

Vallée a été capable de revenir en force à sa dernière entrée à l’eau pour s’assurer de mettre la main sur la médaille d’argent grâce à ses 272,30 points.

« Je suis incroyablement contente de ce que j’ai démontré aujourd’hui (dimanche). Je suis un peu déçue de ne pas avoir eu la médaille d’or parce que j’ai raté mon plongeon le plus facile. C’était la première compétition depuis plus d’un an où je me sens moi-même. Ce sentiment-là me rend vraiment heureuse. J’ai travaillé mon mental dans les derniers mois et c’est vraiment encourageant », a indiqué Vallée.

L’Américaine Hailey Hernandez (261,75 points) a complété le podium derrière les deux Canadiennes.

En qualification, Vallée avait terminé au premier rang, alors que Ware s’était classée troisième.

L’argent pour Zsombor-Murray et Wiens

Nathan Zsombor-Murray et Rylan Wiens n’ont pas eu l’occasion de s’entraîner ensemble autant qu’ils l’auraient souhaité pour se préparer pour la finale du 10 m synchronisé aux Jeux panaméricains. Wiens a été ennuyé par plusieurs blessures au cours de l’été. Rien n’a toutefois paru au Centre aquatique de Santiago où les Canadiens sont montés sur la deuxième marche du podium.

Zsombor-Murray et Wiens ont amorcé leur journée en force, obtenant une note de 54,00 dès leur premier plongeon, ce qui les plaçaient rapidement au premier rang provisoire.

Les choses se sont toutefois corsées à leur troisième saut, mais ils ont rapidement été en mesure d’oublier ce passage à la plateforme pour conclure la journée en force, obtenant notamment 85,47 points à leur quatrième entrée à l’eau.

« On a seulement pu faire deux pratiques ensemble au 10 m dans les derniers mois avec les blessures de Rylan. Je suis très heureux de notre performance. Nous avons été excellents en ce qui a trait au synchronisme. C’est de très bon augure pour l’année olympique qui arrive », a indiqué Zsombor-Murray.

« Je suis très heureux de cette médaille ! J’ai été sur les lignes de côtés durant la majeure partie de la saison et je m’ennuyais de cet esprit de compétition. La nervosité était présente, mais tout s’est finalement bien déroulé. Nous avons commencé et terminé fort, je pense que c’est ce qui a fait la différence », a ajouté Wiens.

Le duo canadien termine avec une note totale de 404,04 points. Seuls les Mexicains Kevin Berlin et Randar Willars (419,94 points) ont été en mesure de faire mieux qu’eux.

Les Colombiens Alejandro Solarte et Sebastian Villa (383,19 points) ont complété le podium.

Lundi, Thomas Ciprick et Bryden Hattie seront en action au 3 m individuel chez les hommes alors que du côté féminin, Caeli McKay et Kate Miller feront équipe à la plateforme de 10 m en synchronisé.

Canadians Storm Podium in Santiago

Montréal, October 22, 2023 – Canada’s divers pulled out all the stops on Sunday at the Pan-American Games in Santiago, Chile, in their bid to conquer the podium. Pamela Ware and Mia Vallée finished first and second in the 1m springboard competition, while Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Rylan Wiens won silver in the men’s 10m synchronized event.

Ware picked up right where she had left off this past summer, displaying remarkable consistency on the 1m springboard on Sunday to claim the top spot on the podium, with 280.25 points.

She finished the competition beautifully with a score of 58.50 points on her final dive—the same score she had obtained on her previous dive.

“I’m so happy, and I’m so proud of myself and of Mia. I wasn’t feeling that great after the preliminaries this morning, but I managed to make a fresh start afterward. I’m a bit surprised, but very proud,” said Ware. “My aim was to execute my dives well, and I focused on the adjustments my coach suggested. It’s a great confidence booster, and I’m feeling very confident about my upcoming events.”

Today’s medal was Ware’s first individual Pan-American medal. She was a member of the Canadian team in Toronto in 2015 and in Lima, Peru, in 2019.

Mia Vallée had an excellent start to the day, earning scores of 57.20, 63.55 and 60.00 on her first three dives of the final. However, the athlete from Beaconsfield encountered a few difficulties on her fourth attempt, which cost her precious points. Nevertheless, Vallée rallied on her final dive, securing the silver medal with a total of 272.30 points.

“I’m incredibly happy with what I did today. I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t win the gold medal because I messed up my easiest dive, but this was the first competition in more than a year where I really felt like myself. That makes me very happy. I’ve been working on my mental training over the past few months, and this is really encouraging,” said Vallée.

Hailey Hernandez of the USA completed the podium behind the two Canadians, with 261.75 points.

In the qualifying rounds, Vallée had finished first and Ware had finished third.

Silver for Zsombor-Murray and Wiens

As they prepared for the 10m synchronized final at the Pan-American Games, Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Rylan Wiens were not able to train together as often as they would have liked, as Wiens was sidelined with a number of injuries this past summer. However, none of that was apparent at the Santiago Aquatic Centre, where the two Canadians secured the second spot on the podium.

Zsombor-Murray and Wiens kicked off the day with a bang, scoring 54.00 on their very first dive, which quickly put them in provisional first place.

Things got a bit thorny on their third attempt, but they quickly put it behind them and ended the day on a high note, earning 85.47 points for their fourth dive.

“Because of Rylan’s injuries, we’ve only been able to practice on the 10m together twice in the past few months. I’m very happy with our performance. Our synchronization was excellent. It bodes well for the upcoming Olympic year,” said Zsombor-Murray.

“I’m very happy with this medal! I was sidelined for most of the season, and I really missed the spirit of competition. I was nervous, but things ultimately went well. We were strong at the beginning and again at the end, and I think that’s what made the difference,” added Wiens.

The Canadian pair finished with a total of 404.04 points. Only Kevin Berlin and Randar Willars of Mexico managed to outscore them, with 419.94 points.

Alejandro Solarte and Sebastian Villa of Colombia (383.19 points) completed the podium.

On Monday, Thomas Ciprick and Bryden Hattie will compete in the men’s individual 3m event, while Caeli McKay and Kate Miller team up for the women’s synchronized 10m platform competition.
