Montréal, 27 mai 2023 – Trois athlètes du Canada étaient en action de jeudi à samedi au Grand Prix de Haute-Autriche disputé à Linz. Aucun d’entre eux n’a été en mesure de trouver le chemin de la victoire lors de ce passage dans le Vieux Continent, mais ils se serviront certainement tous de cette expérience pour poursuivre leur progression.

Du côté masculin, Julien Frascadore était le seul Canadien en action. Médaillé d’or aux Championnats canadiens ouverts chez les seniors il y a moins d’une semaine, Frascadore profitait d’un laissez-passer au premier tour dans le tableau des moins de 66 kg.

L’athlète de 23 ans avait ensuite rendez-vous avec Hekim Agamammedov du Turkménistan au deuxième tour. Frascadore a reçu trois shidos lors de l’affrontement, ce qui a donné la victoire à son adversaire après environ trois minutes de combat.

Agamammedov a par la suite été défait par l’Espagnol David Garcia Torne, qui a éventuellement remporté la médaille d’or de la catégorie.

Du côté féminin, Isabelle Harris (-63 kg) et Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) étaient toutes les deux présentes sur les tatamis autrichiens après avoir été couronnées championnes canadiennes dimanche dernier au Centre Pierre-Charbonneau de Montréal.

Opposée à la Danoise Helene Christensen au premier tour, Harris a été surprise par la rapidité d’exécution de son adversaire qui a réussi à obtenir la victoire par ippon. Momo Tatsukawa a remporté la finale toute japonaise chez les moins de 63 kg en défaisant sa compatriote Seiko Watanabe en finale.

Quant à Coralie Godbout, elle a elle aussi été défaite dès son affrontement de premier tour devant la Colombienne Esteysy Diaz. Cette dernière a ensuite baissé pavillon devant la future médaillée d’or, l’Allemande Anna-Maria Wagner.

Wealth of Experience for Young Canadian Athletes

Montréal, May 27, 2023 – Three Canadian athletes took part in the Upper Austria Grand Prix, held in Linz from Thursday to Saturday. Although none of the three attained victory on the Old Continent, they gained valuable experience that will serve them well in the future.

Julien Frascadore was the only male Canadian in action. Having won gold at the Senior Canadian Open Championships less than a week ago, he was given a first-round bye in the under-66 kg weight class.

In the second round, the 23-year-old was up against Hekim Agamammedov of Turkmenistan. Frascadore received three shido during the bout, giving his opponent the win after about three minutes of combat.

Agamammedov was later defeated by David Garcia Torne of Spain, who went on to win the gold medal for the weight division.

On the women’s side, Isabelle Harris (-63 kg) and Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) also competed in Austria after having earned the title of Canadian champion in their respective weight classes last week at the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau in Montréal.

In the first round, Harris was caught off-guard by her opponent Helene Christensen of Denmark, whose speed of execution earned her an ippon for the win. In the all-Japanese under-63 kg final, Momo Tatsukawa defeated her countrymate Seiko Watanabe.

Coralie Godbout was defeated in her first-round match by Esteysy Diaz of Colombia. Diaz later lost to Anna-Maria Wagner of Germany, who went on to win gold.
