Montréal, 28 avril 2026 – Les jeunes athlètes canadiens se sont démarqués, mardi, aux Championnats panaméricains cadets de judo, disputés à Guayaquil, en Équateur. Au total, 15 médailles ont été remportées par les représentants de l’unifolié, dont quatre en or, gracieuseté de Roman Semyrozun (-60 kg), Anes Mati (-66 kg), Dalia Benhamou (-44 kg) et Nicole Daria Manaila (-48 kg).

Gabrieli Makhatadze (-55 kg), Amir Temirbaev (-60 kg), Drake Gregory (-81 kg) et Victoria Summers ont quant à eux pris le deuxième rang de leur catégorie respective.

Anes Mati est celui qui a eu la journée de travail la plus chargée avec quatre combats. Après des victoires face à Caleb Moya, du Costa Rica, et Thiago Carvalo, de l’Argentine, le Québécois, cinquième des plus récents mondiaux cadets, l’a emporté par ippon en demi-finale contre le Brésilien Bruno Sacilotto.

Il a couronné sa journée avec une victoire en venant à bout de l’Américain Daniel Lima en finale de la catégorie.

« Anes a connu une super belle compétition. Sa victoire en demi-finale face au Brésilien a probablement été sa plus spectaculaire de la journée. Ç’a été une longue journée, bien remplie et il a su bien gérer du début à la fin », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Bouchard.

De son côté, Roman Semyrozun a dû affronter son compatriote Amir Temirbaev dans le combat ultime chez les moins de 60 kg, duel qu’il a remporté de manière expéditive.

« C’est dommage de voir deux Canadiens s’affronter, mais en même temps, c’est un signe qu’ils ont tous les deux fait le travail pendant la journée. Roman a surpris Amir dès la première séquence avec une attaque rapide, ç’a été plus court que ce à quoi on s’attendait, mais le mérite lui revient parce que ce n’est pas facile de surprendre un adversaire qui te connait bien », a résumé Bouchard.

Plus tôt, Semyrozun avait eu raison du Péruvien Piero Herrera et du Brésilien Rafael Falcao afin d’obtenir son billet pour la finale.

Quant à elle, Dalia Benhamou a dû trimer dur en grande finale pour venir à bout de son adversaire, la Brésilienne Anna Clara Mendes. L’athlète de Saint-Hyacinthe a finalement réussi à s’imposer après 75 secondes de temps supplémentaire.

Elle avait battu l’Argentine Brisa Mercado et l’Équatorienne Daniela Rodriguez Manzaba en début de journée.

« Ç’a été un énorme ippon pour Dalia en finale. Elle a fait de belles projections tout au long de la journée et la finale a été assez longue. Elle a sorti un gros contre pour aller chercher l’or. »

Puis, Nicole Daria Manaila a elle aussi connu un tournoi parfait en signant trois victoires en autant de combats. Tout comme Benhamou, Manaila a été poussée à la limite par son adversaire en finale, la Brésilienne Gabriela Pereira. La prolongation a toutefois été de courte durée. Pereira a reçu un troisième shido, donnant ainsi la victoire à la Canadienne.

Elle avait également forcé l’Équatorienne Leonela Arevalo à commettre trois fautes lors de son premier affrontement de la journée. Elle avait ensuite vaincu Silvana Donayre, du Pérou, en demi-finale.

« Elle a très bien géré le combat en imposant son rythme lentement, mais sûrement. Elle a mis beaucoup de pression et ce n’est pas un hasard si ses adversaires ont dû commettre des pénalités », a conclu le pilote canadien.

Giorgi Kurashvili (-50 kg), Jasur Aliyev (-70 kg), Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg), Ahniia Grebennikova (-52 kg), Emma Tritton (-57 kg), Angelina Kioreskou (-70 kg) et Emilya Aliyeva (+70 kg) ont été les autres médaillés du jour, terminant sur la troisième marche du podium.

Les Championnats panaméricains se poursuivent mercredi, à Guayaquil, avec la présentation des tournois chez les juniors.

Fifteen Medals for Canada at Cadet Pan-American Championships

Montréal, April 28, 2026 – Canada’s young judokas made their mark on Tuesday at the Cadet Pan-American Judo Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador. In total, the Canadian team collected 15 medals, including four gold medals awarded to Roman Semyrozun (-60 kg), Anes Mati (-66 kg), Dalia Benhamou (-44 kg), and Nicole Daria Manaila (-48 kg).

Gabrieli Makhatadze (-55 kg), Amir Temirbaev (-60 kg), Drake Gregory (-81 kg), and Victoria Summers won silver in their respective weight categories.

With four bouts on his schedule, Mati had the busiest day of competition. Following victories over Caleb Moya of Costa Rica and Thiago Carvalo of Argentina, the Québécois—who placed fifth at the most recent Cadet World Championships—defeated Bruno Sacilotto of Brazil by ippon in the semi-finals.

He then capped off his day with a triumph over Daniel Lima of the USA in the finals.

“Anes competed very well. His semi-final victory over the Brazilian was probably his most spectacular of the day. It was a long, full day, but he managed it well from start to finish,” noted Canadian coach Antoine Bouchard.

In the under-60 kg finals, Semyrozun was pitted against his compatriot Temirbaev, whom he defeated expeditiously.

“It’s unfortunate that two Canadians had to fight each other, but at the same time, it’s proof that they both did a great job today. Roman bested Amir in the first sequence with a quick attack, so it was a shorter bout than we expected, but that’s to his credit, because it’s not easy to catch an opponent off guard when they know you well,” Bouchard explained.

Earlier, Semyrozun had secured his ticket to the finals by dispatching of Peru’s Piero Herrera and Brazil’s Rafael Falcao.

Meanwhile, Benhamou had to fight hard in the finals to overcome her opponent, Anna Clara Mendes of Brazil. But the athlete from Saint-Hyacinthe ultimately prevailed after 75 seconds of overtime.

She had defeated Argentina’s Brisa Mercado and Ecuador’s Daniela Rodriguez Manzaba earlier in the day.

“Dalia’s ippon in the finals was a big one. She had made several nice throws during the day, but her final match was really long. However, she pulled off a big counterattack to clinch the gold medal.” 

Manaila also remained undefeated throughout the tournament, racking up three wins in as many matches. Much like her teammate Benhamou, however, she was pushed to her limits in the finals by Gabriela Pereira of Brazil. Fortunately, the overtime round was brief. Pereira received three shidos, thus granting the win to the Canadian.

In her first bout of the day, Manaila had also forced Leonela Arevalo of Ecuador to take three penalties. She then went on to defeat Silvana Donayre of Peru in the semi-finals.

“[Nicole Daria] managed the bout well, setting the tempo slowly but surely. She put a lot of pressure on her opponents, so it came as no surprise that they ended up committing violations,” noted the Canadian coach.

Giorgi Kurashvili (-50 kg), Jasur Aliyev (-70 kg), Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg), Ahniia Grebennikova (-52 kg), Emma Tritton (-57 kg), Angelina Kioreskou (-70 kg), and Emilya Aliyeva (+70 kg) all won bronze medals today.

The Pan-American Championships will continue on Wednesday in Guayaquil, with the junior tournaments taking centre stage.
