L’or à la clé pour Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard

Montréal, 2 août 2022 – Au terme d’un combat hargneux de près de 7 minutes, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard a trouvé la faille de son adversaire via une clé de bras fatidique qui lui a donné la victoire chez les moins de 63 kg, mardi, aux Jeux du Commonwealth 2022.

En terrain ennemi, contre Gemma Howell de l’Angleterre, le plan était clair. « J’avais déjà affronté cette judoka et ç’a avait été un combat serré que j’avais perdu. Je me suis donc préparée pour un long affrontement. Aussi, c’était beaucoup un enjeu de mains, pour contrôler le positionnement, et j’ai bien réussi cette partie », a décrit Beauchemin-Pinard après son triomphe.

« Comme c’était un long combat, j’ai eu un petit doute à un moment, si j’allais réussir à l’avoir. J’y suis allée une séquence à la fois, en revenant toujours plus forte. »

Sur la chaise de l’entraîneur, l’athlète de 28 ans a pu compter sur son ancien coéquipier, Antoine Valois-Fortier. « Antoine connait bien mon judo, on a voyagé ensemble, c’est un match parfait pour me pousser à aller plus loin », a conclu la judoka.

Argent et bronze chez les moins de 81 kg

Les deux athlètes canadiens en action dans la catégorie des moins de 81 kg ont atteint les finales. François Gauthier-Drapeau se battait pour l’or contre Lachlan Moorhead, de l’Angleterre, alors que son coéquipier Mohab ElNahas était en mission pour le bronze.

François Gauthier Drapeau s’est finalement incliné contre le combattant britannique au combiné de deux waza-ari bons pour le ippon. Le vainqueur a affligé au Canadien le même mouvement à deux reprises.

« On avait prévu contrer cette technique, mais de l’autre côté. Comme Moorhead l’a faite du côté opposé, par ma défense, je me suis tiré dans la gueule du loup. Après le premier, je perdais, donc je fonçais plus sur mon adversaire pour tenter quelque chose et essayer de ne pas perdre 1-0. Il a réussi une deuxième fois », a analysé le médaillé d’argent, fort déçu.

Plus tôt, l’autre représentant de l’unifolié de la catégorie, Mohab ElNahas, a fait face à Asa Weithers, de la Barbade, pour une médaille de bronze. Dans un combat expéditif, le judoka canadien a réussi à immobiliser son adversaire pour obtenir le ippon donnant accès à la troisième marche du podium.

« Honnêtement, c’était plus dur que je le pensais ! J’imaginais qu’il allait se fatiguer en une minute et que j’allais le projeter, mais non, il était physique. Je l’ai amené au sol et j’ai réussi à l’immobiliser. Mais ce n’était pas aussi facile que ç’en avait l’air ! J’ai utilisé la bonne technique et je suis content du résultat », a expliqué Mohab ElNahas.

Avant son dernier combat, l’athlète de 26 ans avait perdu contre l’éventuel médaillé d’or, Lachlan Moorhead, ce qui l’a mené à l’un des deux affrontements pour le bronze.

Les judokas canadiens Coralie Godbout (-78kg), Shady ElNahas (-100kg), Kyles Reyes (-100 kg) et Marc Deschenes (+100 kg) seront en action mercredi pour la dernière journée du tournoi des Jeux du Commonwealth 2022.

Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard : a lock on gold!

Montréal, August 2, 2022 – After a fierce fight lasting nearly seven minutes, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard decoded her opponent’s weakness, and with a fateful arm lock secured victory – and a gold medal — in the Under 63 kg class on Tuesday, at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Beauchemin-Pinard knew she was far from the favourite judoka when she stepped onto the tatami against host England’sGemma Howell, yet her plan was clear. « I’d already faced her before, and at that time, we had a close bout and I lost. So, after that I prepared myself for a long match. In order to control positioning it was a lot of hand-to-hand, and I feel that I did really well in terms of that, » explained a pleased Beauchemin-Pinard after her triumph.

« Because it was a long fight, at one point, I began to doubt if I was actually going to win it. I went one sequence at a time, determined to keep coming back stronger. »

The 28 year-old athlete knew that Antoine Valois-Fortier was sitting in the coach’s chair – a former teammate, and someone she knew she could count on. « Antoine knows my judo style well, we’ve traveled together, and that makes it the perfect context to push myself further, » concluded the judoka.

Silver and bronze in the Under 81 kg class

In the under 81 kg class, two Canadian athletes reached the finals. François Gauthier-Drapeau fought for gold against England’s Lachlan Moorhead, while fellow Canuck and  teammate Mohab ElNahas was on a mission for bronze.

After a solid bout, François Gauthier Drapeau finally had to admit defeat against Moorhead, dealt by way of a combination of two waza-ari good for an ippon. The Briton hit the Canadian with the same move twice.

« We had planned to counter that technique, but on the other side (ndl: of the body). Since Moorhead executed the move on the opposite side than what we were expecting, for my defensive move, I had to put myself in the wolf’s jaws. After the first waza-ari, I could tell I was losing, so I went after my opponent more aggressively, trying out a move so I wouldn’t lose 1-0. But, he succeeded a second time, » analyzed the disappointed silver medalist.

Earlier in the day, Mohab ElNahas, the other Canadian in that weight category, faced Barbados’ Asa Weithers for a bronze medal. In a fast-paced battle, the Canuck judoka was able to hold his opponent down – earning an ippon, and a shiny bronze medal to take home.

« Honestly, it was harder than I thought! I thought he would get tired after about a minute, and then I’d be able to throw him, but no, was a very physical fighter. I brought him to the ground and managed to pin him down – but it wasn’t as easy as it looked! Overall, I used the right technique and I’m happy with the result, » explained ElNahas.

Prior to EINahas’ medal match, the 26-year-old lost to eventual gold medalist Lachlan Moorhead, which led to one of two bronze medal bouts.
