Montréal, 6 août 2023 – Les épreuves par équipe sont particulièrement appréciées par les athlètes en plongeon puisqu’il s’agit souvent de l’occasion de s’amuser en compagnie de coéquipiers avec qui ils ne travaillent pas en temps normal.

Dimanche, à la toute dernière épreuve de la Finale de la Coupe du monde de Berlin, en Allemagne, les athlètes canadiens ont doublement apprécié cette épreuve puisqu’ils l’ont terminé avec la médaille d’or autour du cou.

« C’est tellement un sentiment incroyable. Nous sommes ensemble sur la route depuis cinq semaines, c’est une belle récompense de conclure le tout avec la médaille d’or et de chanter l’hymne national, c’est vraiment plaisant », a déclaré Caeli McKay.

Caeli McKay, Bryden Hattie, Pamela Ware et Nathan Zsombor-Murray ont uni leurs forces pour obtenir une note finale de 395,50 points. Provisoirement cinquièmes après les deux premières rondes, les Canadiens, par l’entremise de McKay et Zsombor-Murray ont pris les choses en mains pour propulser le pays vers le sommet du podium.

McKay et Zsombor-Murray ont d’abord obtenu des pointages respectifs de 66,00 et 70,40 lors de leur plongeon individuel pour placer le pays au deuxième rang provisoire avec un seul saut à effectuer.

Les deux athlètes ont alors épaté la galerie en synchro, récoltant 72,00 points, permettant au pays de monter sur la plus haute marche du podium. Une médaille grandement appréciée par tous les membres de l’équipe.

« Je suis toujours excité de participer aux épreuves par équipe et je suis tellement heureux de la tournure des événements. C’était une belle expérience de faire un saut en synchro avec Pamela. Je suis très fier de toute notre équipe », a mentionné Bryden Hattie.

« C’est une belle façon de conclure notre fin de semaine, l’épreuve s’est extrêmement bien déroulée et nous pouvons maintenant retourner à la maison avec une médaille d’or de plus dans nos valises », a ajouté Nathan Zsombor-Murray.

Les Canadiens ont été accompagnés sur le podium par les Australiens (390,70 points) et les Britanniques (387,95 points), respectivement deuxièmes et troisièmes.

Zsombor-Murray était également en action en individuel dimanche où il s’est classé quatrième de la finale à la plateforme de 10 m. Un résultat qui le déçoit quelque peu, mais qui le motive assurément pour le futur.

« Je ne peux pas dire que je suis super heureux de ma performance. J’ai fait de bons plongeons, mais ce n’était tout simplement pas assez pour accéder au podium. Ça laisse un peu un goût amer. Je sais qu’il ne m’en manque pas beaucoup. Ç’a été un mois chargé avec les Championnats du monde et de manière générale, je suis fier de moi. La prochaine fois, je serai sur le podium », a-t-il expliqué.

Le Chinois Hao Yang a remporté les grands honneurs grâce à ses 537,25 points. Il a été accompagné sur le podium par l’Ukrainien Oleksii Sereda (deuxième, 480,45 points) et le Britannique Noah Williams (troisième, 468,05 points).

De leur côté, Pamela Ware et Mia Vallée ont accédé à la finale au tremplin de 3 m en début de journée. La lutte était chaude pour la troisième place entre Pamela Ware, la Chinoise Yani Chang et l’Américaine Sarah Bacon. C’est finalement Chang qui a eu le meilleur alors que Ware a terminé au quatrième rang avec 311,05 points.

Mia Vallée a quant à elle dû se contenter du neuvième échelon avec ses 267,15 points.

La médaille d’or est revenue à la Chinoise Yiwen Chen (344,15 points) qui a été suivie de près par la Japonaise Sayaka Mikami (342,60 points), elle qui termine deuxième.

Team Canada Diving Gold closes a winning weekend

Montréal, August 6, 2023 – Team events are especially popular, given that they frequently provide divers with a chance to have fun in the company of teammates that might not normally be paired together.

Sunday, in the very last event of the Diving World Cup Super Finals in Berlin (Germany), Canadian athletes had even more reason to enjoy the team event, thanks in part to the shiny new gold medals around their necks.

« It’s such an incredible feeling. We’ve been on the road together for five weeks, and it’s a great reward to end it all with the gold medal and to sing the national anthem on top of the podium, it’s really nice, » said Caeli McKay.

Caeli McKay, Bryden Hattie, Pamela Ware, and Nathan Zsombor-Murray combined forces to earn a final score of 395.50. Provisionally fifth after the first two rounds, the Canadians – thanks to efforts by McKay and Zsombor-Murray – took things in hand to propel the country to the top of the podium.

McKay and Zsombor-Murray first scored 66.00 and 70.40, respectively, on their individual dives to put the country in provisional second place with just one dive to go.

The two athletes then stunned the gallery in synchro diving, scoring 72.00 points, taking the country to the top of the podium, a medal that was greatly appreciated by all team members.

« I’m always excited to take part in team events, and I’m so happy with how things turned out. It was a great experience to do a synchro jump with Pamela. I’m very proud of our whole team, » said Bryden Hattie.

« This is a great way to end our weekend, the event went extremely well and we can now go home with another gold medal in our suitcases! » enthused Nathan Zsombor-Murray.

The Canadians were joined on the podium by the Australian Team (390.70 points) and the British Team (387.95 points), second and third respectively.

Zsombor-Murray was also in action in an individual diving event on Sunday, finishing fourth in the 10m platform final. While it may have been a somewhat disappointing result, it is also can be seen as motivating for the future.

« I can’t say I’m super happy with my individual performance. I did some good dives, but that just wasn’t enough to get on the podium. It leaves a bit of a bitter taste. I know I’m not missing much in terms of skill. It’s been a busy month with the World Championships. Overall, I’m proud of myself. Next time, I’ll be on the podium, » he explained.

China’s Hao Yang took top honors with 537.25 points, and was joined on the podium by Ukraine’s Oleksii Sereda (second, 480.45 points) and Britain’s Noah Williams (third, 468.05 points).

Pamela Ware and Mia Vallée reached the final on the 3m springboard earlier in the day. The battle for third place was fierce, and took place between Pamela Ware, China’s Yani Chang and American Sarah Bacon. In the end, it was Chang who came out on top, while Ware finished fourth with 311.05 points.

Mia Vallée had to settle for ninth place with 267.15 points.

The gold medal went to China’s Yiwen Chen (344.15 points), closely followed by Japan’s Sayaka Mikami (342.60 points) in second place.
