Judo Canada – Championnats du monde
Montréal, 22 mai 2024 – Encore ennuyé par une blessure au muscle ischiojambier, Louis Krieber-Gagnon a été défait à son premier affrontement des moins de 90 kg, mercredi, aux Championnats du monde qui ont lieu à Abou Dabi, aux Émirats arabes unis. Le Montréalais a été surpris par ippon à la mi-combat de son duel qui l’opposait au Hongrois Peter Safrany.
« Louis a eu un tirage compliqué. Il est arrivé ici avec une petite blessure qui a chamboulé sa préparation, mais somme toute, il a fait un bon combat. Il a eu l’occasion d’attaquer, il l’a prise, mais le Hongrois l’a bien géré et il a su le contrer à ce moment pour marquer », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier après la défaite de son protégé face au champion européen 2023 des moins de 23 ans.
Les deux judokas s’étaient déjà affrontés au Grand Chelem d’Oulan-Bator, l’an dernier en Mongolie, et Safrany s’était également imposé, cette fois par waza-ari.
Krieber-Gagnon avait fait l’impasse sur deux tournois avant les mondiaux afin d’arriver aux Émirats arabes unis en meilleure santé après sa blessure subie aux Championnats panaméricains, le mois dernier. Selon Valois-Fortier, il se sentait tout de même d’attaque avant sa quatrième participation aux Championnats du monde seniors.
« Je n’ai pas eu besoin de le motiver. L’événement est important et c’est pourquoi il voulait y participer. Après sa blessure, c’est exceptionnel qu’il ait pu compétitionner aujourd’hui (mercredi), même si ça l’ennuyait encore. Il a quand même fait un bon combat. »
Aux mondiaux de l’an dernier, Krieber-Gagnon avait remis une fiche de 1-1.
La conclusion des Championnats du monde aura lieu jeudi. Ana Laura Portuondo Isasi (+78 kg) combattra chez les femmes, tandis que du côté masculin, Shady El Nahas et Kyle Reyes seront tous les deux inscrits dans le tableau des moins de 100 kg.
« On peut s’attendre à ce que les gars se rendent loin demain. Ils sont prêts, en santé et ils ont démontré au cours des dernières compétitions qu’ils étaient en forme », a conclu l’entraîneur.

Louis Krieber-Gagnon Defeated in First Round
Montréal, May 22, 2024 – Louis Krieber-Gagnon, who continues to struggle with a hamstring injury, was defeated in his first under-90 kg bout on Wednesday at the World Championships in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The Montrealer was taken down by ippon halfway through his combat against Peter Safrany of Hungary.
“Louis’s draw was a bit tricky. He arrived here with a minor injury that threw off his preparation, but all in all, he fought well. He saw an opportunity to attack and he took it, but the Hungarian handled it well, counterattacking at the same moment to score an ippon,” explained Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.
Krieber-Gagnon and Safrany, the 2023 U23 European champion, last faced off at the Ulaanbaatar Grand Slam in Mongolia last year, where Safrany won by waza-ari.
Prior to this week’s World Championships, Krieber-Gagnon skipped out on two tournaments so as to arrive in the United Arab Emirates in improved health following an injury he sustained at the Pan-American Championships last month. According to Valois-Fortier, as Krieber-Gagnon’s fourth appearance at the Senior World Championships approached, he felt up to the task.
“I didn’t need to try to motivate him. It’s an important event, so he wanted to be here. It’s pretty amazing that he was able to compete today [Wednesday] despite his injury, which is still bothering him. Nevertheless, he fought well.”
At last year’s World Championships, Krieber-Gagnon finished with a 1-1 record.
The World Championships will come to an end on Thursday. Ana Laura Portuondo Isasi (+78 kg) will compete on the women’s side, while Shady El Nahas and Kyle Reyes hit the tatamis in the men’s under-100 kg weight division.
“The guys should be able to go far tomorrow. They’re ready, they’re healthy, and in their most recent competitions, they’ve both shown that they’re in good shape,” concluded the coach.
