Montréal, 16 mars 2025 – Lowan Le Bris a dû faire face à sept adversaires, dimanche, à la Coupe européenne cadet de Porec, en Croatie, afin d’accéder à la troisième marche du podium chez les moins de 73 kg.

Les deux derniers combats du Britanno-Colombien ont eu des allures de marathon alors qu’il a eu besoin du temps supplémentaire pour vaincre l’Espagnol Sergi Ikeme Mascaro et, ultimement, le Croate Josip Havranek, afin de concrétiser sa troisième place.

« Lowan a fait face à deux coriaces adversaires à ses deux derniers combats. Il a réussi à avoir le dessus en étant plus stratégique qu’eux. Il a fait les bonnes attaques au bon moment. En finale de bronze, il a réussi à piéger son adversaire qui a finalement été pénalisé trois fois, bon pour un ippon », a raconté l’entraîneur canadien Alexandre Émond.

Après une victoire au premier tour face à l’Ukrainien Artem Pivniuk, Le Bris s’est fait surprendre au tour suivant devant le Britannique Lenny Tancock. Ce dernier a été en mesure de poursuivre sa route jusqu’en demi-finales afin de permettre à Le Bris de passer au repêchage.

Le Canadien a d’abord profité d’un laissez-passer alors que l’Italien Matteo Poggi ne s’est pas présenté à leur affrontement. Il a ensuite eu raison du Serbe Uros Jalic et du Polonais Jakub Borzecki avant de poursuivre sa route jusqu’à la troisième marche du podium.

« Ç’a été une énorme journée et la défaite a été difficile à avaler au départ, mais il voulait vraiment se reprendre au repêchage. Il a été bon toute la journée et il mérite amplement cette médaille. Je pense qu’il est bien fier de lui », a poursuivi l’entraîneur.

Du côté féminin, Charlie Thibault (-70 kg) a remis une fiche de deux victoires et deux défaites. Elle a d’abord vaincu l’Ukrainienne Anna Terletska et l’Autrichienne Mavie Rabl avant de s’incliner dans un duel de plus de 8 minutes en quarts de finale face à la Croate Ana Basker.

Au repêchage, la fatigue a semblé avoir raison de la Québécoise qui a baissé pavillon devant l’Espagnole Andrea Sanchez Valle après les quatre minutes du temps réglementaire.

« Charlie a été excellente au sol en début de journée, mais elle a fait face à des adversaires qui lui ont donné des difficultés par la suite. Après quatre minutes de temps supplémentaires, je crois que les arbitres sont plus rapides à donner un troisième shido pour mettre fin au combat, et c’est peut-être ce qui est survenu. Elle s’est fait surprendre à son combat suivant et sa journée s’est terminée ainsi », a complété Émond.

De leur côté, Dilana Gesa (-57 kg) et Maia Thomson (-63 kg) n’ont pas trouvé le chemin de la victoire dimanche.

Les athlètes canadiens demeureront en Croatie pour les deux prochains jours avant de revenir au pays pour parfaire leur préparation en vue des Championnats panaméricains cadets qui se tiendront à Lima, au Pérou, en avril.

Lowan Le Bris earns a podium after seven bouts

Montréal, March 16, 2025 – Lowan Le Bris had to face no less than seven adversaries to get there, but he was indeed able to grab a hard-fought bronze medal in the Under 73kg class, Sunday, at the Porec Millennium Team Cadet European Cup.

The British Columbian judoka’s quest for the podium included two last matches that seemed like marathons, including added time. Yet in the end, Le Bris bested both Spain’s Sergi Ikeme Mascaro, and lastly, Croatia’s Josip Havranek, to earn the bronze medal.

“Lowan faced two tough opponents in his last two bouts. He managed to get the better of them by being more strategic than they were – he had the right attacks at the right time. In the bronze final, he succeeded in tricking his opponent, who was eventually penalised three times, good for an ippon, said Canadian Coach Alexandre Émond.

After winning the first round against Ukraine’s Artem Pivniuk, Le Bris was surprised in the next round by Great Britain’s Lenny Tancock. Tancock made it all the way to the semi-finals, allowing Le Bris to advance to the repechage.

The Canadian received a bye when Italy’s Matteo Poggi failed to show up on the tatami. Le Bris then saw to beating Serbia’s Uros Jalic and Poland’s Jakub Borzecki, before continuing on to his eventual third step of the podium.

“It was a huge day, and it was hard to swallow the defeat at first, but he really wanted to bounce back in the repechage. He performed well all day and deserves this medal. I think ultimately he’s really proud of himself,” continued the coach.

In women’s judo action, Charlie Thibault (-70 kg) finished her day with two wins and two losses. She first defeated Ukraine’s Anna Terletska and Austria’s Mavie Rabl. Thibault then went on to her own marathon bout, which lasted over 8 minutes, before finally losing to Croatia’s Ana Basker in the quarter-finals.

Fatigue seemed to have gotten the better of the Quebec judoka in the repechage – and understandably so! – as she fell to Spain’s Andrea Sanchez Valle after four minutes of regulation time.

“Charlie was excellent on the floor early in the day, but she was up against some stiff competition, who were able to cause problems for her afterwards. After four minutes of extra time, I think the referees are quicker to give a third shido to end the fight, and maybe that’s what happened. She was caught off guard in her next bout, and that was the end of her day,’ added Émond.

Dilana Gesa (-57 kg) and Maia Thomson (-63 kg) were also on the tatami Sunday, but were unable to win.

Canadian judokas will stay in Croatia over the next two days, before returning home to perfect their preparation for the upcoming Pan-American Cadet Championships in Lima, Peru, this April. Stay tuned for more judo thrills!
