Montréal, 23 avril 2023 – Marc Deschênes n’a fait qu’une bouchée de la compétition à l’Open panaméricain de Saint-Domingue, en République dominicaine, dimanche. Dans la catégorie des plus de 100 kg, Deschênes n’a eu besoin que d’un total de 220 secondes, divisé en trois affrontements pour monter sur la plus haute marche du podium.
Après des victoires relativement faciles par ippon en quart de finale contre l’Américain Philipp Horiuchi et en demi-finale face au Vénézuélien Luis Amezquita, le Québécois avait rendez-vous avec Jose Nova Alcantara de la République dominicaine en grande finale.
L’expérience de Deschênes s’est fait ressentir lors de ce duel ultime où il a été en mesure d’immobiliser son adversaire au sol pour marquer le ippon après un peu plus de 90 secondes de combat, au grand plaisir de l’entraîneur canadien Sasha Mehmedovic.
« Il est le vétéran de l’équipe et il a clairement fait sentir son expérience sur les tatamis aujourd’hui. Il a battu tous ses adversaires assez facilement. Il a respecté le plan de match à la lettre en finale pour battre son adversaire. Il mérite pleinement sa médaille d’or », s’est réjoui l’entraîneur.
Du côté féminin, Coralie Godbout a elle aussi tiré son épingle du jeu chez les moins de 78 kg. L’athlète de Stoneham-et-Tewksbury a remporté ses deux premiers combats pour obtenir son billet jusqu’à la grande finale.
Au terme d’un duel âprement disputé, Godbout s’est finalement avouée vaincue devant la Dominicaine Eiraima Silvestre. Mehmedovic s’est toutefois dit très fier du travail de sa protégée.
« Je suis très contente de la performance de Coralie. Je crois sérieusement qu’elle aurait pu battre la Dominicaine en finale, mais à force d’acquérir de l’expérience sur la scène internationale, elle sera mieux préparée pour ce genre de situation. Elle s’améliore à chaque compétition et c’est tout à son honneur », a mentionné Mehmedovic.
Un troisième représentant de l’unifolié est monté sur un podium dimanche à Saint-Domingue, Nikola Petrovic (-100 kg) a remporté l’un des affrontements pour une médaille de bronze en battant l’Équatorien Junior Angulo de manière assez convaincante.
Il avait auparavant remporté son premier combat de la journée devant le Dominicain Ariel Lorenzo Pina avant de s’incliner en demi-finale contre le Cubain et éventuel médaillé d’or Liester Cardona.
« Nikola est un de nos plus jeunes athlètes et il est déjà excellent. Il s’est très bien battu en demi-finale et il est passé tout près d’aller chercher la victoire. Il est revenu en force en finale pour la médaille de bronze. C’est très encourageant de le voir connaître du succès », a ajouté l’entraîneur.
Aussi en action dimanche, David Popovici a terminé en cinquième place dans le tableau des moins de 81 kg après sa défaite en finale de bronze contre le Cubain Maikel Mkencie Londres. Guillaume Gaulin s’est quant à lui contenté d’une septième place.
Avec une récolte de sept médailles en deux jours à Saint-Domingue, Sasha Mehmedovic peut dire mission accomplie et il espère que ses athlètes sauront poursuivre sur cette lancée jusqu’aux Jeux panaméricains qui seront disputés au Chili cet automne.
« Dans l’ensemble, je suis très satisfait de la performance de nos athlètes à cet Open panaméricain, ils sont allés chercher des points importants en vue des qualifications pour les Jeux panaméricains et en plus, ils ont pu ajouter des outils à leur bagage d’expérience », a-t-il conclu.

Marc Deschênes breezes to the top of the podium
Montréal, April 23, 2023 – Marc Deschênes made short work of the competition at the Pan American Open in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on Sunday. In the Over 100 kg category, Deschênes required only an incredible 220 seconds – divided into three bouts – to reach the top step of the podium.
After relatively easy wins by ippon in the quarter-final against American Philipp Horiuchi, and in the semi-final against Venezuelan Luis Amezquita, the Québec native had a tatami date with Jose Nova Alcantara (Dominican Republic) in the grand final.
Deschênes’s experience was evident during his final duel, where he was able to immobilize his opponent on the ground to score yet another ippon after little more than 90 seconds, to Canadian Coach Sasha Mehmedovic’s immense pleasure.
« He’s the team veteran, and he clearly demonstrated his experience on the mat today. He beat all his opponents pretty easily, he followed his game plan to the letter in the final, and he beat his opponent. He fully deserves the gold, » enthused the coach.
On the women’s side of the tatami, Coralie Godbout also had a solid day in the Under 78 kg category. The judoka from Stoneham/Tewksbury won her first two bouts thereby earning a berth to the grand final.
After a hard-fought duel, Godbout was sadly defeated by Dominican Eiraima Silvestre. All the same, Mehmedovic was very proud of his protégée’s work.
« I’m really happy with Coralie’s performance. I totally believe that she could have beaten the Dominican judoka in the final, but as she gains more experience on the international scene, she’ll be better prepared for this kind of situation. She’s getting better with each competition and that’s a major credit to her, » said Mehmedovic.
A third Canadian stepped atop the podium Sunday in Santo Domingo: Nikola Petrovic (-100 kg) won a bronze medal by defeating Ecuador’s Junior Angulo in a rather convincing manner.
Petrovic won his first bout of the day over Dominican Ariel Lorenzo Pina before losing in the semi-finals to Cuban – and eventual gold medalist – Liester Cardona.
« Nikola is one of our youngest athletes and he’s already excellent. He fought very well in the semi-final and came very close to winning; he came back strong in the bronze medal final. It’s very encouraging to see him succeed, » added the coach.
Also in action on Sunday, David Popovici finished in fifth place in the Under 81 kg draw after losing the bronze final to Cuban Maikel Mkencie London. Guillaume Gaulin finished his day in seventh place.
With a grand total of seven medals over two days in Santo Domingo, Sasha Mehmedovic can say it’s definitely been ‘mission accomplished’, and hopes his athletes will be able to keep up the momentum until the Pan American Games in Chile this fall.
« Overall, I’m very satisfied with our athletes’ performance at the Pan American Open: they came to earn important points for Pan American Games qualification, and in addition, they were able to equip themselves with valuable experience,” he concluded.
