Judo Canada – European Cup
Montreal, August 27, 2016 –Montreal’s Marie Besson achieved Team Canada’s best result Saturday at the European Judo Cup in Sarrebruck, Germany. The 18 year-old athlete scored a seventh place finish in the Under 52 kg class.
The day began well for the judoka, with a win through Ippon against France’s Patricia Fortel. However Besson’s good fortune reversed in her second bout, where Romania’s Larisa Florian was deemed the winner via Ippon. The Quebec native’s day ended in the repêchage, where she was defeated by a yuko doled out by Britain’s Julia Scardone.
In the Under 63 kg, Oshawa’s Emily Burt and Montreal’s Jaquina Simao were both eliminated after their first match. They each had earned a pass into the first round. Burt lost due to a waza-ari handed out by Germany’s Sheena Zander, while Simao saw her day come to an end because of an Ippon doled out by the Netherland’s Lizzy Gevers.
Canadians Quickly Eliminated
In Men’s competitions, Longueuil’s Gabriel Juteau won via Ippon against The Netherland’s Bjorn Burgers. Juteau then lost against Germany’s Manuel Scheibel.
Oshawa’s Bradley Langlois faced a similar fate in the Under 73 kg class. He won his first match against France’s Abdelbaki Meddah, and followed it up with a loss via Ippon to Germany’s Rene Scheneider.
Lastly, Albertan judoka Darren Elcock (Under 60 kg) won his first bout when German competitor Fabian Haessner ended up with two penalties. Elcock then went on to lose via Ippon by German’s Alexander Bernd.
Sunday, the following Canadians will step onto the tatami: Alix Renaud-Roy (Under 70 kg), Mina Coulombe (Under 78 kg), Étienne Briand (Under 81 kg), Olivier Gobeil St-Amand (Under 81 kg), Louis Krieber-Gagnon (Under 90 kg) and Marc Deschênes (Under 100 kg).
