Médaillé d’argent à Antalya, François Gauthier-Drapeau signe le meilleur résultat de sa carrière en Grand Chelem !

Montréal, 30 mars 2024 (Judo Canada) – François Gauthier-Drapeau a mis la main sur la deuxième médaille de l’équipe canadienne au Grand Chelem d’Antalya, en Turquie. Le Québécois a été décoré d’argent chez les moins de 81 kg samedi, 24 heures après le triomphe de Christa Deguchi (-57 kg).

Gauthier-Drapeau avait rendez-vous avec le Japonais Takanori Nagase, champion olympique en titre, en grande finale, la première de sa carrière en Grand Chelem. Un adversaire de taille bien connu de son entraîneur Antoine Valois-Fortier, qui l’a affronté à plusieurs occasions comme athlète.

« Ç’a été une finale très serrée ! Un combat qui était à la portée de François et il y a beaucoup de bonnes choses à retenir », a partagé Valois-Fortier.

Classé sixième au monde, François Gauthier-Drapeau a tenté plusieurs attaques dès le début du combat, sans réussir à s’inscrire au pointage. Le judoka de 26 ans a également contré les manœuvres de Nagase et est parvenu à forcer la tenue d’une prolongation. Les deux judokas ont été pénalisés après 2 minutes et 43 secondes de temps supplémentaire. Le Canadien ayant déjà été pénalisé à deux occasions dans ce duel, la séquence est venue mettre fin au combat et a donné la victoire au Japonais.

« Je suis vraiment content de m’être rendu en finale ! Malgré la défaite, je pense que j’ai livré un très bon combat. J’ai suivi le plan de match et ça s’est bien passé. Ça s’est joué de peu », a mentionné François Gauthier-Drapeau.

« C’est vraiment une bonne chose que François ait pu mettre les mains sur Takanori Nagase en compétition, a indiqué Antoine Valois-Fortier. C’était la première fois et ça va nous servir pour la suite. Ce sera un point de repère important en vue des Jeux olympiques. »

Des victoires signées face à Georgi Gramatikov, de la Bulgarie, ainsi qu’à Nurbek Murtozoev, de l’Ouzbékistan, ont permis à François Gauthier-Drapeau de rapidement trouver son rythme dans ce tournoi. Il a eu le dessus sur le Portugais Joao Fernando afin de passer en demi-finale et de se mesurer à l’Italien Antonio Esposito, futur médaillé de bronze.

« J’étais complètement vidé en arrivant en finale ! C’est un gros accomplissement d’avoir gagné ma demi-finale, une étape importante et je sens déjà qu’il y a eu un déclic pour moi. J’ai été plus agressif que dans mes derniers tournois pour aller chercher les projections et ç’a payé », a précisé celui qui, en plus de cette deuxième place obtenue samedi, compte six médailles de bronze en Grand Chelem jusqu’à maintenant.

« Je n’ai aucun doute qu’une fois arrivé au moment important, François sera en mesure de gagner ce combat. Il a obtenu quatre belles victoires et il a dominé tous ses adversaires. C’est une très belle journée pour lui », a ajouté son entraîneur.

Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard s’est quant à elle classée septième des moins de 63 kg. La judoka, classée première au monde dans sa catégorie, a amorcé son tournoi du bon pied samedi. Elle a d’abord défait l’Espagnole Sarai Padilla Guerrero avant de l’emporter face à Habibe Afyonlu, de Hong Kong.

La médaillée d’or du Grand Chelem de Tbilissi s’est inclinée devant la Croate Katarina Kristo, éventuelle médaillée de bronze, et s’est dirigée vers le repêchage par la suite. Elle a été vaincue par l’Autrichienne Magdalena Krssakova.

« C’était une fin de semaine exigeante à Tbilissi et d’enchaîner deux compétitions comme ça, ce n’était pas facile, a souligné Antoine Valois-Fortier. On savait que c’était une grosse commande, mais elle a quand même fait de très belles choses aujourd’hui. »

De son côté, Arthur Margelidon a combattu dans le tableau des moins de 73 kg. Le Montréalais, qui occupe le dixième rang mondial, a perdu son premier affrontement de la journée, où il a été opposé à Abubakr Sherov, du Tajikistan.

Le Grand Chelem d’Antalya se conclura dimanche. Shady ElNahas et Kyle Reyes seront tous les deux en action chez les moins de 100 kg. Louis Krieber Gagnon (-90 kg) et Lana Laura Portuondo-Isasi (+78 kg) seront aussi à surveiller dans leur catégorie respective.

Silver medallist in Antalya, François Gauthier-Drapeau records his career best Grand Slam result!

Montreal, March 30^th, 2024 (Judo Canada) – François Gauthier-Drapeau won Canada’s second medal at the Antalya Grand Slam in Turkey. The Quebecer was awarded silver in the under-81 kg category on Saturday, 24 hours after Christa Deguchi’s triumph in the under-57 kg competition.

Gauthier-Drapeau squared off against defending Olympic champion Takanori Nagase of Japan in the final, the first of his Grand Slam career. A worthy opponent his coach Antoine Valois-Fortier was very familiar with, having faced him on several occasions as an athlete.

“It was a very close final! The fight was within François’ grasp, and there are a lot of good things to take away from it,” shared Valois-Fortier.

Ranked sixth in the world, François Gauthier-Drapeau attempted several attacks early in the fight, but failed to get on the scoreboard. The 26-year-old judoka also countered Nagase’s maneuvers and managed to force overtime. Both judokas were penalized 2 minutes and 43 seconds into extra time. As the Canadian had already been penalized on two occasions, the sequence ended the hostilities and awarded the victory to the Japanese.

“I’m delighted to have reached the final! Despite the loss, I think I put up a very good fight. I followed the game plan and it went well. It was a close call,” said François Gauthier-Drapeau.

“I like the fact that François was able to get his hands on Takanori Nagase in competition, mentioned Antoine Valois-Fortier. This first encounter will serve us well for the future and will be an important benchmark for the Olympic Games.”

Wins over Bulgaria’s Georgi Gramatikov and Uzbekistan’s Nurbek Murtozoev enabled François Gauthier-Drapeau to quickly find his rhythm in the tournament. He got the better of Portugal’s Joao Fernando to advance to the semi-finals where he battled the eventual bronze medallist Antonio Esposito from Italy.

“I was completely drained when I got to the final! It was a big achievement and an important step to win my semi-final, and I can already feel that something has clicked for me. I was more aggressive than in my last tournaments going for projections and it paid off,” said the athlete who, in addition to his second-place finish on Saturday, has six career Grand Slam bronze medals to his name.

“I have no doubt that when the stakes will be higher, François is going to win this fight. He had four good wins and dominated all his opponents. It’s a great day for him,” added his coach.

Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard finished seventh in the under-63 kg category.Ranked first in the world in her weight class, the Canadian judoka got her tournament off to a good start on Saturday. She first defeated Spain’s Sarai Padilla Guerrero, before getting the better of Turkey’s Habibe Afyonlu.

The Tbilisi Grand Slam gold medallist lost to eventual bronze medallist Katarina Kristo of Croatia, and then headed for the repechage where she fell to Austria’s Magdalena Krssakova.

“It was a demanding weekend in Tbilisi, and back-to-back competitions like that aren’t easy, stated Antoine Valois-Fortier. We knew it was a tall order, but she still did some great things today.”

Competing in the under-73 kg division, Montreal native and world number ten Arthur Margelidon lost his first bout of the day to Abubakr Sherov of Tajikistan.

The Antalya Grand Slam concludes on Sunday. Shady ElNahas and Kyle Reyes will both be in action in the under-100 kg category. Louis Krieber Gagnon (-90 kg) and Ana Laura Portuondo-Isasi (+78 kg) will also be in the spotlight in their respective categories.
