Médaillé d’argent, Julien Frascadore monte sur un premier podium en Grand Prix

Montréal, 11 octobre 2025 – Julien Frascadore a remporté la première médaille de sa carrière dans un Grand Prix, samedi, du côté de Lima, au Pérou. Le Canadien a décroché l’argent chez les moins de 66 kg après une finale éreintante qui aura duré plus de neuf minutes.​​​​​​​

Le Québécois, qui prenait part à un premier tournoi depuis avril, avait rendez-vous avec l’Italien Valerio Accogli en finale, champion européen junior de 2024. Ce dernier s’est montré très dynamique dès le début de ce duel, mais Frascadore a résisté à chacune de ses attaques. La tenue d’une prolongation a finalement été nécessaire et le représentant de l’Italie a mis fin aux hostilités en renversant le Canadien.

« Julien n’a pas grand-chose à se reprocher. Il a essayé tout ce qu’il avait dans son arsenal pour tenter de le projeter. Même chose pour son adversaire : les deux ont voulu s’imposer dans un combat extrêmement serré », a commenté l’entraîneur de l’équipe nationale Antoine Bouchard.

« Il a fait un excellent combat en demi-finale et n’a jamais été en danger. Jusqu’à la finale, ç’a été une journée phénoménale pour Julien, probablement l’une de ses meilleures journées ! »

Frascadore a conclu la compétition avec une fiche de quatre victoires et une défaite. Il a d’abord vaincu l’Italien Mattia Miceli au premier tour grâce à deux waza-ari et a défait le Cubain Mauricio De Armas grâce un ippon spectaculaire. Une victoire face au Brésilien Ronald Lima, 15^e au classement mondial, a permis au futur médaillé d’argent d’atteindre le carré d’as. Il a réussi à l’emporter dans un face-à-face chaudement disputé où il a longtemps tiré de l’arrière.

Une fois arrivé en demi-finale, le judoka de 25 ans a eu le dernier mot face à Rashad Yelkiyev, de l’Azerbaïdjan, en inscrivant un waza-ari, victoire qui l’a assuré de monter sur le podium.

De son côté, Evelyn Beaton a obtenu une septième place chez les moins de 52 kg. L’Albertaine a entamé son parcours en l’emportant contre la Britannique Lola Hodson. Elle a ensuite subi deux revers en prolongation. Le premier contre la Brésilienne Gabriela Conceicao, éventuelle médaillée d’argent, puis le second contre la Péruvienne Brillith Gamarra, au repêchage, elle qui a conclu sur la troisième marche du podium.

Heidi Quach a quant à elle été limitée à un combat au tableau des moins de 48 kg. Elle s’est inclinée devant la future médaillée d’or de la catégorie, la Chilienne Mary Dee Vargas Ley.

Six athlètes du Canada seront en action dimanche au Grand Prix de Lima. Justin Lemire, Yanis Hachemi combattront chez les moins de 73 kg, tandis que David Popovici et Arthur Margelidon seront des moins de 81 kg. Du côté féminin, Laurence Biron et Jessica Klimkait seront à surveiller chez les moins de 63 kg.

A first-ever Grand Prix medal for Julien Frascadore, who shines in silver

Montréal, October 11, 2025 – Julien Frascadore won his very first Grand Prix medal at the Lima, Peru Grand Prix on Saturday. The Canadian judoka took silver in the Under 66kg category after a grueling final that lasted over nine minutes.

The Quebec-based athlete was competing in his first tournament since April, and faced 2024 European Junior Champion Valerio Accogli (Italy) in the final. Frascadore resisted each of Accogli’s early aggressive attacks, but overtime ultimately proved necessary. In the end, the Italian judoka ended the bout by throwing the Canadian.

« Julien really did the best he could, he tried everything in his arsenal to throw off the other judoka. Quite honestly, the same goes for his opponent: both wanted to win and it was an extremely close bout, » commented national team coach Antoine Bouchard.

“He fought an excellent fight in the semifinals and was never in danger. Up until the final, Julien was having a phenomenal day, probably one of his best days ever,” Bouchard noted.

Frascadore finished the competition with a record of four wins and one loss. Courtesy two waza-aris, he made short work of Italy’s Mattia Miceli in the first round. The Canadian then defeated Cuba’s Mauricio De Armas with a spectacular ippon. A victory over Brazil’s Ronald Lima (ranked 15th internationally) permitted the eventual silver medalist to reach the final four. Trailing for most of the bout, Frascadore managed to win a hotly contested match.

Once in the semifinals, the 25-year-old judoka got the better of Rashad Yelkiyev (Azerbaijan) with a waza-ari, a victory that ensured the Canadian a place on the podium.

In women’s judo action, Evelyn Beaton finished seventh in the Under 52kg category. The Albertan began her day with a victory over Britain’s Lola Hodson. She then suffered two overtime losses, the first to Brazil’s Gabriela Conceicao, eventual silver medal, and the second loss to Peru’s Brillith Gamarra in the repechage, who finished third on the podium.

Heidi Quach was halted after one bout in the Under 48kg category. A small consolation, Quach lost to the category’s future gold medalist, Chile’s Mary Dee Vargas Ley.

The judo thrills aren’t over this weekend: six Canadian judokas will step on to the tatami this Sunday at the Lima Grand Prix. Justin Lemire and Yanis Hachemi will compete in theUnder 73kg category, while David Popovici and Arthur Margelidon will compete in theUnder 81kg category. On the women’s tatami, Laurence Biron and Jessica Klimkait will be judokas to watch in the Under 63kg category.
