Médaillée d’argent, Jessica Klimkait arrive tout juste à court

Montréal, 22 mars 2024 – Jessica Klimkait a bataillé ferme jusqu’à la toute dernière seconde, mais elle a tout de même dû s’avouer vaincue en grande finale du tournoi des moins de 57 kg présenté vendredi, au Grand Chelem de Tbilissi, en Géorgie.

Le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que l’Ontarienne a tout donné sur les tatamis. Après avoir remporté ses quatre premiers combats du jour, deux en prolongation et deux autres par waza-ari au terme du temps réglementaire, Klimkait avait rendez-vous avec la Géorgienne Eteri Liparteliani dans le duel ultime.

Encouragée par la foule, l’athlète locale a rapidement montré ses intentions, marquant au passage un waza-ari en contrant la Canadienne pour prendre les devants dans le combat. Le tout a semblé servir d’électrochoc à Klimkait qui n’a jamais cessé d’augmenter la pression par la suite. Elle a lancé de multiples attaques, mais sa rivale est demeurée intraitable à chaque reprise.

Visiblement exténuée, Liparteliani a reçu deux shidos dans la dernière minute du combat, mais elle est parvenue à éviter une dernière pénalité fatale pour filer avec le titre, soulevant la foule à l’issue des quatre minutes d’hostilités.

« Il ne fallait pas que ça dure 30 secondes de plus (pour la Géorgienne), parce que Jessica serait probablement ressortie gagnante ! » a lancé l’entraîneur national Antoine Valois-Fortier en fin de journée.

« Il faut tout de même donner crédit à Liparteliani, elle a connu toute une journée, a-t-il poursuivi. Malheureusement, Jessica a commis quelques petites erreurs tactiques et c’est ce qui fait la différence. Elle est revenue très forte dans le combat et ce genre d’expérience lui permettra aussi d’être plus forte à la prochaine occasion. »

Également en lice chez les moins de 57 kg, Christa Deguchi est montée sur la troisième marche du podium à la suite d’un gain par waza-ari contre la Brésilienne Jessica Lima dans l’une des deux finales de bronze.

Victorieuse à ses deux premières sorties dans la capitale géorgienne, Deguchi a connu sa seule défaite de la journée face à Kaja Kajzer, gagnante par waza-ari en prolongation lors de ce duel. La Slovène a poursuivi sa route pour aboutir en cinquième place.

De son côté, Deguchi, meneuse au classement de la catégorie et championne du monde en titre, s’est rapidement ressaisie au repêchage en l’emportant par ippon en moins d’une minute contre la Serbe Marica Perisic, avant de boucler de belle manière contre Lima.

« Elle s’est fait surprendre dans un combat qu’elle dominait largement, selon moi. Mis à part ça, c’était une très bonne journée et c’est un bon apprentissage. Après, on peut faire nos devoirs pour être prêts lors du grand jour », a conclu Antoine Valois-Fortier.

Pour leur part, Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) et Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg) ont tous les deux connu la défaite au deuxième tour après avoir bénéficié d’un laissez-passer d’entrée de jeu.

Le Grand Chelem de Tbilissi reprendra samedi, alors que Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg) et François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) tenteront d’ajouter à la récolte du Canada.

Silver Medallist Jessica Klimkait Comes Up Just Short

Montréal, March 22, 2024 – Although Jessica Klimkait fought hard until the very last second of Friday’s under-57 kg big final at the Tbilisi Grand Slam in Georgia, she ultimately had to concede defeat.

One thing is certain, however: She gave her all on the tatamis today. After winning her first four bouts of the day, two in overtime and two by waza-ari at the end of regulation time, Klimkait faced Eteri Liparteliani of Georgia in the final showdown.

Cheered on by the home country crowd, Liparteliani quickly made her intentions clear, scoring a waza-ari to take the lead. This appeared to spur Klimkait into action, and she relentlessly increased the pressure on her opponent for the duration of the match. She launched multiple attacks, but each one was rebuffed by her invincible adversary.

In the final minute of the bout, a visibly exhausted Liparteliani received two penalties, but managed to avoid a third, which would have cost her the match. Instead, she held on until the final moments, bringing the crowd to its feet as she clinched the title at the end of the four-minute contest.

“Had it lasted another 30 seconds or so, Jessica probably would have won!” exclaimed Canadian national coach Antoine Valois-Fortier at the end of the day.

“Still, you have to give credit to Liparteliani. She had a heck of a great day,” he added. “Unfortunately, Jessica made a few tactical errors, and that’s what made the difference. She made a strong comeback during that bout, and the experience will only make her stronger next time.”

Also in under-57 kg action today, Christa Deguchi climbed onto the third step of the podium after defeating Jessica Lima of Brazil by waza-ari in one of the two bronze medal finals.

After winning her two first bouts on Friday in the Georgian capital, Deguchi experienced her only loss of the day against Kaja Kajzer of Slovenia, who won by waza-ari in overtime. Kajzer ended the day in fifth place.

Following her loss, Deguchi, who holds the top spot in the weight category’s international rankings and is the current world champion, quickly bounced back in the repechage, defeating Serbia’s Marica Perisic by ippon in less than a minute before finishing the day in fine style against Lima.

“[Christa] got caught off-guard in a bout that she was clearly dominating, in my opinion. Other than that, she had a great day, and it was a good learning experience. Now we’ll go do our homework, and be ready for next time,” concluded Valois-Fortier.

Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) and Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg) lost their second-round bouts after receiving byes in the first round.

The Tbilisi Grand Slam will continue on Saturday. Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg), and François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) will attempt to add to Canada’s medal haul.
