Une première victoire pour Arthur Margelidon dans sa nouvelle catégorie
Montréal, 8 mars 2025 – Catherine Toshkov a fait preuve de détermination durant la Coupe européenne junior de Portimao, au Portugal. Elle a su se ressaisir après une défaite en quarts de finale et a terminé sa journée sur la troisième marche du podium des moins de 63 kg.
La Québécoise a d’abord battu l’Espagnole Martina Obrador Gonzalez avant de perdre contre Lucia Carpio Fernandez, aussi de l’Espagne. Toshkov a poursuivi sa route au repêchage et a obtenu trois victoires afin d’accéder au podium. Elle l’a emporté contre l’Italienne Nicole Basili, puis contre les Espagnoles Leyre Villamediana Juncal et Olena Suzanna Hrebenyk Savchak.
« C’est une bonne journée pour Catherine, qui a travaillé durement tout le tournoi. En quarts de finale, elle menait et le plan de match fonctionnait bien, mais elle a perdu sa concentration. Son adversaire en a profité pour la surprendre et la projeter au sol, a indiqué son entraîneur Sasha Mehmedovic. Elle a retrouvé sa motivation au repêchage et elle a très bien fait », a-t-il ajouté à propos de Toshkov, qui avait aussi reçu le bronze à la Coupe européenne junior de Malaga, la semaine passée.
« Catherine a bien suivi les stratégies pour chaque combat. C’est une deuxième médaille de suite pour elle en Europe dans sa nouvelle catégorie. Elle continue de s’améliorer et je suis persuadé qu’elle atteindra la finale un jour. »
En action dans cette même catégorie, Sara-Anne Beaudin a conclu avec une victoire et deux défaites, tandis qu’Abigail Smith, a perdu à deux occasions chez les moins de 78 kg.
Du côté masculin, Dylan De Jesus a conclu le tournoi avec une fiche d’une victoire et deux revers dans le tableau des moins de 66 kg. Défait par l’Espagnol Eduardo Miranda Galindo, De Jesus s’est dirigé vers le repêchage où il a gagné face au Portugais Jose Sereno. Il n’a toutefois pas été en mesure de vaincre l’Italien Nicholas Annino par la suite.
Toujours chez les moins de 66 kg, Daniil Kremerman, Alexis Kearney et Luke Thomson ont tous été éliminés à leur premier combat du jour. Scénario similaire pour Muhammad Turajev (-60 kg), limité à un affrontement.
Fahd Fitane a quant à lui combattu avec les moins de 73 kg au Portugal. Il a vaincu le Britannique Peter Davies, puis a été éliminé par l’Espagnol Kayna Sergio De Oliveira Leal.
La Coupe européenne junior de Portimao reprendra dimanche. Angelina McCristall (-48 kg), Valeria Kostrovets (-52 kg), Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg), Hayden Thibeault (-57 kg) et Yehor Paladii (-100 kg) seront les représentants de l’unifolié à surveiller.
Une première victoire pour Arthur Margelidon
Arthur Margelidon a été stoppé au deuxième tour du Grand Prix de Linz, samedi, mais c’est son impressionnante victoire obtenue en début de journée qui aura retenu l’attention en Autriche. Sa première chez les moins de 81 kg.
Le Québécois a commencé la compétition en force. Il a affronté le Français Alpha Oumar Djalo, classé 31e au monde dans cette catégorie, et l’a emporté en seulement quelques secondes pour passer au tour suivant.
« Arthur a rencontré un adversaire de taille dès le départ, mais il a réussi à gagner de manière spectaculaire grâce à un super ippon, très rapide », a mentionné l’entraîneur Antoine Valois-Fortier avec enthousiasme.
Margelidon s’est ensuite mesuré à l’Ukrainien Vladyslav Kolobov, un adversaire qu’il avait aussi croisé à l’Open européen de Ljubljana, il y a un peu moins d’un mois. Kolobov a inscrit un waza-ari en fin de combat et le Canadien n’a pas eu suffisamment de temps pour riposter.
« Une nouvelle catégorie, ça vient avec de gros changements et ça demande du temps, de l’adaptation. Signer une première victoire chez les moins de 81 kg, c’est un bon signe. Il a aussi livré un bien meilleur combat que la dernière fois contre l’Ukrainien », a commenté Valois-Fortier.
Du côté des moins de 73 kg, Justin Lemire a perdu son premier combat contre le Belge Zelemkhan Batchaev.
Inscrite dans le tableau des moins de 63 kg, Laurence Biron a eu le dessus sur l’Italienne Flavia Favorini d’entrée de jeu, puis la Néerlandaise Joni Geilen a mis fin à son parcours. Geilen a marqué au début du combat et a conservé son avance jusqu’à la toute fin, malgré les efforts incessants de la Canadienne, à qui le temps aura finalement manqué.
Evelyn Beaton a quant à elle été limitée à un duel en Autriche. Elle s’est inclinée face à l’Allemande Mascha Ballhaus chez les moins de 52 kg.
Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) sera la seule Canadienne en action dimanche en conclusion du Grand Prix de Linz.

Catherine Toshkov Stays the Course with Bronze in Portugal
Montréal, March 8, 2025 – Catherine Toshkov displayed fierce determination at the Junior European Cup in Portimão, Portugal, where she bounced back from a quarter-final loss to finish the day on the third step of the podium in the under-63 kg category.
The Québécoise began her day with a victory over Martina Obrador Gonzalez of Spain, but bowed out to Lucia Carpio Fernandez, also of Spain, in the next round. She then moved on to the repechage, where she clinched three back-to-back wins against Nicole Basili of Italy, Leyre Villamediana Juncal of Spain, and Olena Suzanna Hrebenyk Savchak of Spain to claim her spot on the podium.
“It was a good day for Catherine, who worked hard all tournament. In the quarter-final, she stuck to her game plan and dominated the fight, but at one point, she lost her focus. Her opponent took advantage of that and threw her to the ground,” said Toshkov’s coach, Sasha Mehmedovic. Toshkov also won a bronze medal at last week’s Junior European Cup in Málaga.
“In the repechage, she got her motivation back, and then she did very well. She stuck to her strategy in every match,” he added. “This is her second European medal in a row in her new weight division. She continues to improve, and I’m convinced we’ll see her in a big final one day.”
In the same weight class, Sara-Anne Beaudin finished the day with one win and two losses, while in the under-78 kg draw, Abigail Smith lost both her bouts.
On the men’s side, Dylan De Jesus (-66 kg) ended the tournament with a record of one win and two losses. After bowing out to Eduardo Miranda Galindo of Spain, he defeated Jose Sereno of Portugal in the repechage. However, he was unable to get the better of Italy’s Nicholas Annino in the next round.
Also in the under-66 kg division, Daniil Kremerman, Alexis Kearney, and Luke Thomson were all eliminated in their first battles of the day. Muhammad Turajev met the same fate in the under-60 kg category.
In the under-73 kg weight class, Fahd Fitane ousted Peter Davies of Great Britain before being eliminated by Kayna Sergio De Oliveira Leal of Spain.
The Portimão Junior European Cup will continue on Sunday. Angelina McCristall (-48 kg), Valeria Kostrovets (-52 kg), Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg), Hayden Thibeault (-57 kg), and Yehor Paladii (-100 kg) will be the Canadians to watch.
First win for Arthur Margelidon
Although Arthur Margelidon was knocked out in the second round of the Linz Grand Prix on Saturday, it was his impressive victory earlier in the day that attracted attention in Austria. It was his first win in the under-81 kg weight division.
The Québécois had a strong start to the competition, defeating France’s Alpha Oumar Djalo, who is ranked 31st in the world in the weight class, in just a few seconds to advance to the next round.
“Arthur faced a tough opponent in his first round, but he executed a super ippon, very fast, for a spectacular win,” enthused his coach, Antoine Valois-Fortier.
Next up for Margelidon was Vladyslav Kolobov of Ukraine, whom he fought just under a month ago at the European Open in Ljubljana. As today’s match came to a close, Kolobov scored a waza-ari, and the Canadian ran out of time to retaliate.
“When you move to a new weight category, there are a lot of changes, and it can take some time to adapt. [Arthur’s] first win in the under-81 kg category today was a good sign. He also fought much better against the Ukrainian than he did last time,” explained Valois-Fortier.
In the under-73 kg division, Justin Lemire lost his first and only bout to Zelemkhan Batchaev of Belgium.
In the under-63 kg weight class, Laurence Biron defeated Flavia Favorini of Italy before being eliminated by Joni Geilen of the Netherlands. Geilen scored a point early in the match and, despite the relentless efforts of the Canadian, managed to hold on to her lead until the clock ran out.
Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) lost her first and only bout in Austria to Mascha Ballhaus of Germany.
On Sunday, Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) will be the only Canadian in action on the final day of the Linz Grand Prix.
