Montréal accueille le Canada du 18 au 21 mai !

Montréal, 17 mai 2023 – Les meilleurs judokas provenant de 11 provinces ou territoires du Canada seront à Montréal du 18 au 21 mai afin de prendre part aux Championnats nationaux ouverts. Au menu sur les tatamis du Centre Pierre-Charbonneau : plus de 1500 combats qui mettront en vedette les quelque 1000 athlètes présents pour rafler l’un ou l’autre des 80 titres à l’enjeu !

Inspirée par les médailles d’or et de bronze de Christa Deguchi et Jessica Klimkaitobtenues aux Championnats du monde de Doha la semaine dernière, la relève canadienne voudra en mettre plein la vue à la compétition canadienne de la plus grande envergure du calendrier national.

« Ces championnats canadiens ouverts battront un record de participation. C’est très encourageant pour le judo canadien de voir autant d’athlètes réunis. Je dois avouer que c’est un soulagement, l’effet post-pandémie nous faisait un peu peur sur la participation globale du sport et de notre discipline à travers le pays. Voir encore plus de judokas réunis la fin de semaine prochaine qu’avant 2020 nous donne confiance pour la suite! », a expliqué Nicolas Gill, directeur général et directeur haute performance de Judo Canada.

Après un retentissant succès l’année dernière, le comité organisateur, composé de Judo Canada, de Judo Québec et de Tourisme Montréal, s’attend une fois de plus à des tournois des plus relevés pour les spectateurs présents.

Comme le veut la tradition, l’événement s’amorcera jeudi matin avec la présentation des activités en Kata dans trois divisions distinctes. Puis, quelques heures plus tard, ce sera au tour des athlètes inscrits en Ne-Waza de fouler les tatamis.

Les tournois de judo par catégorie d’âge débuteront ensuite vendredi, à commencer par les catégories des vétérans et des moins de 18 ans. Suivront les compétitions chez les moins de 16 ans, de même que chez les moins de 21 ans samedi et, finalement, chez les seniors dimanche, en conclusion des Championnats nationaux ouverts.

Notons que Judo Canada profitera de la présence de ses nombreux membres pour présenter son gala annuel des prix et reconnaissances pour 2022-2023 plus tard en soirée.

« Le Gala sera le moment de reconnaître l’apport essentiel de nos membres pour le succès du judo au Canada. Le travail de certains sera officiellement souligné par les prix, mais c’est à l’ensemble de la communauté que nous souhaitons dire merci avec cette soirée annuelle festive. », a conclu Nicolas Gill.

Montréal to Host Canada from May 18-21!

Montréal, May 17, 2023 – The top judokas from eleven Canadian provinces and territories will converge on Montréal from May 18 to 21 for the Open National Championships. The event, being held at the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau, will feature more than 1,000 athletes competing in over 1,500 bouts to claim one of the 80 titles up for grabs!

Canada’s up-and-coming judokas, inspired by the gold and bronze medals won by Christa Deguchi and Jessica Klimkait at the World Championships in Doha last week, will be looking to make their mark at the largest Canadian competition on the national calendar.

“The upcoming Canadian Open Championships will break attendance records. Seeing so many athletes together is very encouraging for Canadian judo. I have to admit it’s a relief. We were a bit concerned about the effect the post-pandemic era would have on overall participation in sports, and more particularly in our discipline, across the country. The fact that there will be more judokas at next week’s event than there were before 2020 bodes well for the future!” explained Nicolas Gill, CEO and High Performance Director of Judo Canada.

Following last year’s resounding success, the organizing committee, composed of Judo Canada, Judo Québec and Tourisme Montréal, expects the spectators to be treated to a very high level of competition.

As per usual, the event will begin with the Kata sessions in three distinct divisions on Thursday morning. A few hours later, the Ne-Waza sessions will take place.

The judo tournaments, organized by age category, will begin on Friday. The first groups to compete will be the Veterans and the U18 athletes. This will be followed by the U16 and U21 groups on Saturday. On Sunday, the Open National Championships will conclude with the Senior competitions.

With so many of its members present, Judo Canada will take advantage of the opportunity to hold its 2022-2023 Annual Awards and Recognition Gala later that evening.

“The gala is our chance to highlight the essential contributions our members make toward the success of judo in Canada. The work of certain individuals will be officially recognized with prizes, but the purpose of the annual festive event is to thank the entire community,” concluded Gill.
