Montréal, 16 juillet 2026 – À sa première compétition depuis qu’elle s’est disloqué une épaule à l’entraînement en mars dernier, Nixon Laing (South Surrey/White Rock) a mis ses peurs de côté pour remporter la médaille d’or au tremplin de 3 m, dans le groupe C, aux Championnats nationaux juniors développement, jeudi, à Régina, en Saskatchewan.

« Après ma blessure dans un camp d’entraînement, au Mexique, j’ai travaillé très fort pour revenir au sommet de ma forme. Je ne m’attendais vraiment pas à remporter la médaille d’or, j’y allais un plongeon à la fois en me disant que j’allais être heureuse, peu importe le résultat », a raconté Nixon Laing.

« J’avais honnêtement un peu peur avant le début des Championnats, j’étais nerveuse parce que ça faisait vraiment longtemps que je n’avais pas plongé dans une compétition. Finalement, tout s’est bien passé et je suis vraiment fière de moi. »

Laing a donné le ton dès le début de la finale en obtenant une note de 54,00 à son tout premier plongeon de la séance. Elle a récidivé à sa deuxième présence sur le tremplin en récoltant cette fois 53,20 points. Il s’agit des deux plus hautes notes de toute la finale.

La Britanno-Colombienne a conclu l’épreuve avec un total de 375,05 points.

« Je suis heureuse de mes plongeons en finale, j’ai travaillé fort à l’entraînement pour être le plus constante possible et je crois bien que c’est mission accomplie », a-t-elle ajouté.

Margaret Jeon (Forest City, 329,65) et Jane Lafreniere (Saskatoon, 327,55) ont toutes les deux été récompensées d’une médaille d’argent, comme Jeon ne peut pas représenter le Canada sur la scène internationale. Blair Yan (iDive) a remporté le bronze avec sa récolte de 325,55 points.

Au 1 m chez les garçons, dans le groupe D, Liam Pomerleau (ARO) a remonté la pente après deux premiers plongeons plus difficiles pour terminer la journée avec la médaille d’or autour du cou. Il a mis un point d’exclamation sur sa journée avec une récolte de 48,40 à son dernier passage sur le tremplin pour terminer avec un total de 321,05 points.

« J’avais un peu peur de faire mes plongeons avant la compétition, mais je les ai quand même tous réussis. C’est ma première médaille aux Championnats canadiens et je suis super fier, ça représente tout le travail des dernières années », a indiqué Liam Pomerleau.

Il a été accompagné sur le podium par Thomas Lachapelle (211,95) et Raphaël Plouffe (203,20), tous deux du Club de Plongeon L’Envol.

De son côté, Renatha Chavez (Régina) a obtenu la meilleure note (214,85) lors de la finale à la plateforme, chez les filles, dans le groupe B.

Comme elle ne peut pas représenter le Canada sur la scène internationale, elle a partagé la plus haute marche du podium avec Kathy Li (iDive), qui a terminé la séance avec 209,15 points.

Kaila Myrfield-Wolfe (Saskatoon, 195,20) et Emmalyn Forrest (SFEC, 190,50) ont complété le podium.

Dans les autres compétitions de la journée, Zander Dereniwski a remporté l’épreuve de saut sur les mains dans le groupe C, alors que Jasper Cunningham-Grav (BDA) a terminé au premier rang de la compétition de rip.

Nixon Laing Returns from Injury, Wins Canadian Championship

Montréal, July 16, 2026 – In her first competition since she suffered a dislocated shoulder during training last March, Nixon Laing (South Surrey/White Rock) overcame her apprehensions to win the gold medal in the Group C 3m springboard competition on Thursday at the Junior National Development Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan.

“After injuring myself during a training camp in Mexico, I worked very hard to get back into top shape. I really had no expectations of winning the gold medal today, so I just took it one dive at a time, telling myself that I’d be happy with whatever result I achieved,” said Laing.

“To be honest, I was a bit apprehensive coming into the championships. I was nervous because it had been such a long time since I’d been in a diving competition. But in the end, it all went really well, and I’m very proud of myself.”

Laing quickly set the tone for the finals, obtaining a score of 54.00 on her very first dive. On her second, she received 53.20. They were the two highest scores of the entire finals.

The British Columbian finished the event with a total of 375.05 points.

“I’m really happy with the way I dove during the finals. I’ve trained really hard to be as consistent as possible, and I think I accomplished that,” she added.

In the boys’ Group D 1m event, Liam Pomerleau (ARO) managed to turn things around after struggling with his first two dives, ending the day with the gold medal. He capped off the finals with a score of 48.40 on his very last dive, finishing with a total of 321.05 points.

“Before the competition, I was a bit afraid to do my dives, but in the end, they all went well. This is my first Canadian Championships medal and I’m very proud of it. It represents all the hard work I’ve put in over the past few years,” said Pomerleau.

He was joined on the podium by Thomas Lachapelle (211.95) and Raphaël Plouffe (203.20), who both train with the L’Envol diving club.

In the girls’ Group B platform finals, Renatha Chavez (Regina) obtained the highest overall score (214.85). However, since she is not eligible to represent Canada in international competitions, she shared the top step of the podium with Kathy Li (iDive), who finished with a score of 209.15.

Kaila Myrfield-Wolfe (Saskatoon, 195.20) and Emmalyn Forrest (SFEC, 190.50) completed the podium.

In the day’s other competitions, Zander Dereniwski won the Group C handstand event, while Jasper Cunningham-Grav (BDA) took first place in the rip contest.
