Vancouver, 21 octobre 2022 – Le skieur acrobatique Noah Porter Maclennan a signé un début de saison canon grâce à la meilleure performance de sa carrière, vendredi, à la Coupe du monde de Big Air de Coire, en Suisse. L’athlète d’Ottawa a été décoré de la médaille d’argent. Un exploit qui est d’autant plus remarquable, car il s’agissait seulement du deuxième départ en Coupe du monde de Big Air de sa carrière.
« Non, je ne m’y attendais pas. C’est vraiment une belle et plaisante surprise ! » a révélé le Canadien peu après la compétition.
Porter Maclennan a été constant aux trois sauts, enregistrant au passage des notes de 82,50, 90 et 90 points, qui lui ont procuré un pointage final de 180, car seules les deux meilleures notes étaient comptabilisées.
Le Norvégien et champion olympique en titre de la discipline, Birk Ruud, a survolé le concours avec ses 188,75 points. Ruud était provisoirement premier au classement après des deux premières rondes. L’Américain Troy Podmilsak (179,75) s’est classé troisième.
Le Canadien était au pied du podium virtuel après les deux premiers tours, sauf qu’il a réussi à remonter au classement en exécutant parfaitement son Left Double 1800 Stalefish à son dernier passage sur la rampe.
« Je l’avais atterri à ma première descente, mais ce n’était pas parfait, a poursuivi l’athlète de 19 ans. Au dernier saut, je l’ai bien atterri et c’était surréel ! Les fans au bord de la piste m’ont fait des accolades et j’étais impatient de voir ma note. J’y croyais (au podium), car je savais que ce dernier saut pouvait marquer des points. Je suis vraiment content du résultat ! »
Cette soirée du 21 octobre restera marquée à tout jamais dans la mémoire de Noah Porter Maclennan qui compte bien batailler à nouveau pour la victoire dans les compétitions à venir.
« Maintenant, je dois garder cette vitesse de croisière (pour le reste de la saison) et demeurer concentré », a-t-il conclu.

Olivia Asselin dans le coup aux deux premiers tours
Olivia Asselin (Lévis, Québec) a conclu la compétition féminine en quatrième place (107,75). L’Olympienne des Jeux de Pékin était provisoirement deuxième après le premier saut grâce à une excellente note de 89,25. Elle a ensuite glissé au troisième rang provisoire après deux passages et son dernier saut n’a pu la maintenir sur le podium.
La vice-championne olympique, la Française Tess Ledeux (181), a remporté les grands honneurs devant la Norvégienne Sandra Eie (170,75) et la Suisse Mathilde Gremaud (170).
L’autre finaliste canadienne était Megan Oldham (Parry Sound, Ontario). Alors qu’elle était septième avec encore un saut à faire, Oldham a passé son tour pour le troisième et dernier saut et a conclu au huitième rang.
Exclues de la finale, Brynn Johnston (Comox, Colombie-Britannique) et Rylee Hackler (Calgary, Alberta) ont respectivement fini en 10e et 14e places.

Vancouver, October 21, 2022 – Freestyle skier Noah Porter MacLennan kicked off the new season in fine style, giving the best performance of his career at the Big Air World Cup in Chur, Switzerland, on Friday. The athlete from Ottawa captured the silver medal at only his second-ever Big Air World Cup competition.
“I wasn’t expecting that. It’s a really nice surprise!” said the Canadian, following the competition.
Porter MacLennan performed consistently on all three of his jumps, chalking up scores of 82.50, 90.00 and 90.00 points and earning a final score of 180.00, as only the top two scores are counted.
Norway’s Birk Ruud, the reigning Olympic champion in the discipline, led the field with 188.75 points. Ruud held first place in the provisional standings after the first two rounds. Troy Podmilsak of the USA finished third, with 179.75 points.
Porter MacLennan held the third-place position after the first two rounds, but climbed to second after executing a perfect left double 1800 stalefish on his final descent.
“Although I landed my first jump, it wasn’t perfect,” explained the 19-year-old. “But I landed my final one and it was unreal! The spectators on the sidelines were all cheering for me, so I was excited to see my score. I thought [I might have a chance at the podium] because I knew the jump was worth a lot of points. I’m really happy with my result!”
The date of October 21 will forever be engraved on the memory of Porter MacLennan, who plans to keep pushing for victory in his future competitions.
“What I have to do now is keep up my momentum [for the rest of the season] and stay focused,” he concluded.

Olivia Asselin in contention for first two rounds
In the women’s competition, Olivia Asselin (Lévis, Quebec) finished fourth, with 107.75 points. The Beijing Olympian was second in the provisional standings after her first jump, thanks to an excellent score of 89.25. However, she slid into third place after her second jump, and wasn’t able to maintain her podium position with her third.
Olympic silver medallist Tess Ledeux of France took top honours with 181.00 points, ahead of Norway’s Sandra Eie (170.75) and Switzerland’s Mathilde Gremaud (170.00).
The other Canadian to make the finals was Megan Oldham of Parry Sound, Ontario. Although she held the seventh-place spot with one run to go, Oldham missed her third and final jump and finished eighth.
Brynn Johnston (Comox, British Columbia) and Rylee Hackler (Calgary, Alberta) did not qualify for the finals. They finished 10th and 14th, respectively.
